Tomahawk Ribeye On A Gas Grill | How To Cook Steak

This can depend on the type of grill you have and if there is a nice marble throughout the steak. If youre using a charcoal grill and the steak has some nice marbling, we would recommend giving the steak three to four minutes searing time on each side and around ten minutes of cooking time once the steak is no longer cooking directly over the coals. However, the cook time for a steak of this size can also depend on how you like your steaks. Obviously, if you like your steaks rare or medium-rare then youll want to cook the steak for a shorter period of time, usually two to three minutes per side and only five minutes cook time once the steak is no longer directly over the coals. Using a digital thermometer can easily help you to determine when its time to take your steak off the grill or if it needs to cook for a few minutes longer.

How To Grill A Ribeye

The two most popular ways to cook ribeyes are on the grill or roasting them in the oven. What we like about using the grill is how the fire caramelizes the outside and helps a slightly smokey flavor infuse itself into the beef.

Whether youâre using a gas or charcoal grill, learning how to grill ribeyes is relatively easy as long as you keep a couple of things in mind.

The first is to watch for flare-ups, the marbling is one of the things that make this cut so flavorful, it can also lead to pretty spectacular flames if a steak is left unattended for too long.

The second is donât try and cook the whole thing in two minutes over high heat. The best ribeyes are thick around an inch to an inch and a half thick and take a little while to cook right.

We recommend grilling pretty much every cut of steak over medium heat to make sure it cooks evenly all the way through because who wants to eat a steak that is charred on the outside and cold on the inside.

Also, thereâs no reason to go through the bother of searing a steak over a super hot grill and then reducing the heat. As long as the grill has been preheated long enough for it to come up to temperature, it will do a fine job of searing the steak.

First, remember that no matter which technique you are going to use to make the ribeye, you need to get the meat out of the refrigerator and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. How to Grill Perfect Cowboy Bone

The first trick is selecting the right cut of ribeye steak for grilling. Choose a fresh, thick-cut ribeye steak, at least 1 1/2 to 2-inches thick. If youre in the United States get grass fed, pasture raised or USDA if possible.

Preheat your grill. Whether its gas, charcoal or otherwise fueled, youre going to want those grill grates hot before tossing your meat onto them.

Once youve selected your steak, youre going to want to season it for the grill. Dont hold back! Much of the seasoning you put on the meat is going to fall right off as soon as you place it on the grill, so season to your hearts content.

Here in Albuquerque we are fortunate to have a fantastic local spice company called albukirkyseasonings.com who creates a number of special spice blends and rubs. They are our go-to and can ship anywhere in the US. Toss your steaks onto the grill, turn your flame down to medium.. Close the lid to your grill and walk away. Dont touch them, poke them or manhandle them. Let them cook for at least ten minutes on one side.

After the ten minutes are up, open the lid to your grill and turn over the steaks. Cook for about five more minutes before you start checking their internal temperature for doneness.

After you have let the steak rest for at least 3 minutes if not longer, be sure to enjoy!

Advantages To Grilling Steak

There’s nothing like live-fire cooking to add flavor. In fact, smoke is really the only way to add flavor to food even though it isn’t an actual ingredient. While a medium-rare steak doesn’t take on a ton of smoke flavor, you will definitely taste it. Here are tasty reasons to fire up the grill:

  • Easy clean-up
  • The flavor from the fire and smoke
  • Two zones for control and even cooking
  • Gets you outside while cooking and keeps your kitchen cool

Why You Need To Cook By Temp Not Time

There are so many variables when cooking that simply going off of time will almost always lead to a result you weren’t going for. Steak vary by size, thickness, type and starting temperature, the grill temperature will differ, grates are a different thickness, the air might be warmer or cooler and then there’s the humidity level. What doesn’t change is the desired temperature you want to cook the steak to. The best way to make this happen is simply to rely on a quality probe thermometer.

    Seasoning Grilled Ribeye Steaks

There are a lot of ways to season ribeyes. The marbling helps the steaks absorb flavors from herbs and spices. To help the spices adhere to the steaks and to add more flavor we often combine them with a little olive oil and lemon juice.

The ingredients in this recipe were inspired by the classic Italian dish Bistecca Alla Fiorentina, which is traditionally made with a porterhouse. Working together, the rosemary and garlic are magical, elevating the flavors in the ribeyes creating the perfect steak for hot summer nights.

What Temperature Do You Grill Tomahawk Steaks

Grilling Ribeye Steaks Gas Grill for Sale

One of the most common mistakes when it comes to grilling tomahawk steaks is not allowing your grill to reach the correct temperature. If you are eager to eat your steak, it can be very tempting to rush the process, but it is very important that you wait, otherwise your steak will take longer to cook.

To grill your Tomahawk steak, you should allow the grill to warm up to an internal temperature of 225 degrees Fahrenheit before you even consider putting your steak in the grill. Double check that it has reached this temperature, then add your steak. But remember to keep it as far away from the open flame as you can.

As we have said, it will usually take around 45 minutes for your tomahawk steak to cook at this temperature. But, ensure that you flip the steak and check the temperature every 10 minutes so that it does not burn.

The Third Rule Of Steak House

Learning to temp your steaks is almost as important as learning how to cook your steaks. So you can easily grill them to perfection for each of your guests.

And NEVER EVER CUT THE STEAK to see if it is done. Always use tongs to turn your steak.

While some say you should never turn your steak more than once, I like to get a nice crosshatch marking on my steak so although I dont flip it more than once, I do move it on the grill crossways to get those pretty cross marks on my steaks.

Over a hot grill, your steaks will cook rather quickly, going from very soft to somewhat soft with a bit of a spring to quite firm . Use the space on the top of your hand between your thumb and first finger to feel what a medium-rare steak should feel like.

Get in the habit of touching the steaks often to judge if theyre done.

I absolutely love my Thermopro Wireless Digital Meat Thermometer. It takes all the guesswork out of cooking meats in the oven, on the grill, or in a smoker.

And undercooking is better than overcooking. You can always cook the steaks a little longer, if necessary. *Steaks will continue to cook once theyre off the heat increasing the internal temperature from 5 8 degrees.
