What To Do If Your Grill Wont Light

Itsa beautiful sunny day. Your family is hanging out in your backyard, youve gota few fresh steaks seasoned and ready to go on a platter. All thats left is tofire up the grill and get to grilling. Youve been waiting all year for thismoment. You go over to your grill, hit the gas, and push in your starter button. Here we go.

Exceptnothing happens.

Youtry again, and theres still nothing.

Andjust like that, your barbeque dreams fade away.

Butdont fret! Issues with getting your grill to start are some of the mostcommon. Folks struggling with getting their grills to start are probably themost common support issue that we deal with.

Whileyou might think this means you wont be able to get grilling today, sometimesthe issue is simple user error. Heres everything you should do when your grillwont light.

Grill Wont Light Start Withpatience

Do not get frustrated! One of the first things to go on a grill is the ignition. Most people automatically grab the stick lighter and abandon the ignition all together then try to see what the issue may be.

Though, we find, when your grill wont light, theres nothing really wrong. Quite often it can takea try or two to get your grill to light. This is normal and can be for anumber of reasons. While you shouldnt just continuously crank the gas andpound your starter , dont immediately panicif your grill doesnt start. Usually it is a simple fix.

Instead, step away from the grill, wait a minute, and try again.

Dependingon the type of grill you have, you might not be giving your grill enough timeto ignite. Some grills have slower ignition sequences than others, andsometimes the gas takes a few seconds to get through the burner enough to create a spark. This is especially true with infrared burners. Typically, it takes a longer amount of time for the gas to reach the entire surface area of the burner which means that it takes a few seconds before it will ignite. If you have a center fed tube U Burner, you may want to open the valve and give the gas time to go through the center tube first.

If theres no gasthere, theres nothing to ignite, which means that youre not going to be ableto start your grill.

Dcs Models For Bbq Grill Repair

DCS – Dynamic Cooking Systems — was and is one of the best gas barbecue grills ever made. Most of the high-end gas barbeque grills that sell for thousands of dollars today got their start by copying the DCS business model and by copying the DCS fabrication strategies. The Alfresco “Builder Box” and the Lynx 27 models and the technology for how these models cook are directly linked to the DCS evolution as are most others.

While there are gas barbecue grills that are not worth the expense of repairs for DCS models this is never the case. Although older DCS gas bbq grills can cost thousands of dollars for a cleaning and replacement grill parts they are worth every penny because with one good repair that 20 year old DCS will be “new” for another 10 years. For repairs there are 2 main differences and that is before the “D” model and after the “D” model. Early models were built different and the depth and height of the grills were different. The grills had lava rock trays and cast iron burners that are still available today. After the D model DCS gas grills used the porcelain rods that were so much more effective. The locking trays made the grills easy to clean and, when cleaned, able to last much longer without repairs.

how do you clean the stainless steel grill?

Bruce Dash on November 02, 2017:

After the hurricane the control valve on the right was bent upwards to stop the knob that had zero damage. I used a locking pliers and broke the valve. It is a 17 year old DCS 30.The valve has flat shaped brass to the knob. The broken part is cast or pot metal that broke. I hope I can retro the part or use newer design which would be 2 sets.

Dcs Appliances By Fisher & Paykel

How to Ignite DCS Grill

Fisher & Paykel began in New Zealand in the 1930s when Olive Paykel asked her husband to get her a refrigerator, a new appliance that she saw in the American Ladies Home Journal. Olives son, Maurice Paykel, and son-in-law, Woolf Fisher, began importing appliances from the U.S.

Their business grew steadily until the New Zealand government banned the import of manufactured products. At this moment in time, Fisher and Paykel began to import parts and build their own appliances. The two paved the way for appliance innovation with the creation of the first dishwasher.

As a company, Fisher & Paykel have continued to incorporate excellent performance with user-driven needs as they create new high-end appliances. Since the 1980s, the DCS, or Dynamic Cooking Systems, branch of Fisher & Paykel, has passionately created indoor and outdoor kitchen appliances with the goal of being the most technically advanced, efficient, and stylish pieces on the market.

You can use gas for almost any recipe cooking like Michael Symon. The master chef tastes from grilling results when food oil and liquids from basting are vaporized on the heated floor of the grill to make fumes that add great tastes. What a great flavor! This means that a customer searching for a new grill must decide between aluminum and steel and perhaps glass and objects costing less and less. Make The Gas Grill Ignite

To keep your gas barbeque grill starting reliably and safely, keep the electrodes clean. They are usually inside the firebox on the front wall near the control panel. Many electrodes have a collector box, a small stainless steel box that protects the electrode. The arc may jump between dual electrode posts or from a single electrode post to either the collector box or the gas burner. You grill starter will not light if the electrode cannot spark against a clean piece of steel. The module, battery and switch are still functioning to send the spark to the gas, but the failure is at the electrode. A dirty electrode will not spark.

How To Fix Your Dcs Gas Grill When Some Burners Won’t Light

When one or more burners won’t light, clogs in the non-working burner tubes are often the cause. Remove the grates and the flavor bars and check the non-working burner tubes for clogs such as spider webs inside the burner tubes. Check the ports on the sides of the burner tubes for clogs as well, or for damage.

If the grill has an igniter for each burner, look for cracks in the ceramic insulators of the igniter electrodes that can cause the electrodes to fail. Check wiring connections on the igniters. Reconnect any loose wires and repair any broken wires.

Test the ignition module and replace the ignition module if it isn’t sending spark current to the affected burners.

A failed grill manifold could also prevent some burners from lighting. Replace the manifold if it doesn’t allow gas flow to the affected burners when you turn on those burners’ gas valves.

Gas Bbq Grill Ignition Parts

A gas barbeque grill ignition system consists of several replaceable parts. The module, the electrode wire, and the electrode are the primary parts although sometimes the module will be split into a spark generator, a connection switch and a power source . The electrode is like the spark plug in your car, the part that mounts on or near the gas grill burner and sparks to light the grill. The electrode is usually the culprit when you cannot light your grill.

The gas BBQ ignition module, or spark generator, is the part that creates the juice. Many older gas barbeque grills used a Piezo electric module. These simple ignition modules would last forever. However, most gas grills today use a battery-powered module. Ignition modules with batteries can corrode from moisture, but it is not as common as most of us assume and it can usually be cleaned off. An electrode wire connecting the ignition to the module delivers the spark to light your gas grill. You should be able to see the steel running through porcelain in the front of the firebox just above or beside the gas grill burner. The electrode will consist of the steel rod in porcelain that receive the current and another piece of steel to spark against as a ground. The power from the battery ends as a spark at the tip of this steel rod. If the gas is on, this arc should ignite your gas grill burner.

If your gas grill does not ignite, there could be a few different reasons. Reset the check valve if you are using a propane tank.

Dcs Early Model Bbq Grills And Model Numbers

DCS Frame Mounted Rock Light Install

Early DCS gas barbecue grills were simply referred to by the size of the barbecue head. The bbq head is the part of the gas grill that gets built-in to an outdoor kitchen, the part with all the important stuff. For instance there used to be a 24″ wide DCS model barbecue grill. The model number was “DCS24” with “bq” as a suffix to designate the model was part of the outdoor barbeque models. Finally an “n” was used if this model was made to use natural gas or an “l” was used to designate liquid propane. DCS24BQN was the early model just as the DCS27BQRSL would tell us this model is a 27″ wide gas grill with a rotisserie and a smoker that was made to use liquid propane containers.

As more models came to feed the growing demand for these high-end gas grills the different features were designated by the use of a letter of the alphabet. The model DCS27BQRSL was replaced with DCS27bBQRSL and then with DCS27cBQRSL and DCS27dBQRSL with each iteration correlating with some new feature and benefit added to the gas bbq grill models.
