How To Make Grilled Ham And Cheese

What Kind Of Ham Should You Use For A Grilled Ham And Cheese Sandwich

How to Make a Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich

This is one of those times when deli meat is probably better than fresh ham. I prefer thinly sliced meats for my grilled cheese sandwich with ham, that way it doesnt overwhelm the cheese.

Basic ham works well, but you could also try honey glazed ham, smoked ham, ham with spices like pepper or garlic. Or go with something a little different like Italian prosciutto or Spanish serrano ham, although I wouldnt use cheddar cheese with these types of ham.

You can be really flexible here. What kinds of ham do you enjoy? The skys the limit, so experiment with whatever types of ham you have on hand.

    Ingredients For Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Start off your sandwich-making by gathering the proper ingredients. Heres what you need to perfect this grilled cheese recipe:

    • 2 slices of white or whole grain bread
    • Any bread of your choice works. For best results, use thinly sliced bread that will grill well and not distract from the flavors going on inside the sandwich.
  • 2 slices of cooked ham.
  • Again, thinly sliced high-quality ham works well here. Choose something with a bit of sweetness if you like, such as honey-baked ham. Or, for a more refined grilled cheese, imported prosciutto or jamon are delicious, salty and so savory.
  • 2 slices of cheese
  • I find that melty cheeses such as cheddar or brie cheese work best for this recipe, but you can definitely play around with different cheese types. You can also easily mix and match different kinds of cheese in your sandwich to find a blend that you love! For example, mild mozzarella is nicely complemented by sharp cheddar or stronger blue cheese. Have fun experimenting!
  • 2-3 teaspoons of apple butter.
  • If you dont want to use apple butter or currently dont have any, you can use any fruit jam. Just be careful, jams tend to be really sweet and you dont want to add too much, If youre using a sweeter jam, try using 2 teaspoons instead of 3. Or, if you like something thats sweet with a bit of heat, a nice hot pepper jam or relish is great in this gourmet grilled cheese.
  • Butter
  • You will also need a sandwich press or skillet to cook your sandwich.

How Do You Make This Grilled Ham And Cheese Melt

So with todays grilled sandwich, I simply used the artisan bread that I mentioned earlier. Keep in mind, this sandwich is plenty big for two people to share. If you serve it with some of the things I mentioned above, two people can enjoy this epic sandwich!!

I cut two nice big slices and then buttered one side of it. This buttered side will be the BOTTOM layer of the sandwich.

After that, I just started layering the ingredients. I like putting cheese on both the bottom and top, kind of sandwiching the ham in the middle.

Then, put the other piece of bread on top of the cheese. I buttered the outside so that when you flip the sandwich in the pan, will become the bottom piece. I know it might sound confusing, but in the recipe below, I explain it a bit better!

I used a nice thin black forest ham for this sandwich. I like the briny flavor against the creamy, gooey-ness of the melted cheddar. Which, btw, was an old or sharp cheddar. And as a side note, please use butter, not margarine for the bread. This kind of sandwich is just taken to the next level when you use real butter!

The other key is to fry it low and slow. If you grill it too quickly, the bread will burn before the cheese melts. You want the sandwich to warm slowly, so the cheese gets a chance to get all melty and yummy as the bread toasts or, grills, in the pan.

When its done grilling, turn it out onto a nice board and give it a minute or two to settle. Then slice, and ENJOY!!

Add Your Ham And Cheese On Top Of The Spread

Now layer on the cheese and ham, alternating between dairy and meat so that you get a nice melty texture all the way through. There should be cheese touching both slices of bread to ensure the sandwich melts and stays closed.

Finally, close your sandwich and spread a bit of regular butter on both sides of the closed sandwich.

How to Make Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich. This post is brought to you by Buddig, all opinions are my own.

My Meal Maker is my mom, who is the best home cook I know. Every evening growing up she had dinner on the table, which was more often than not made from scratch. I don’t ever remember disliking anything she made, and to this day I still ask her for recipes.

Once in a while, I will beg her to come to my house to make one of her specialties because even when I follow her exact recipe it doesn’t quite taste the same! Does this sound familiar to you?

I want to share a quick lunch idea that my mom made for me when I was a kid.

This Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich isn’t so much a recipe as it is a preparation. The secret, I think, is that my mom fried up slices of ham before the sandwich.

So when she was making the grilled cheese in a pan, the old school way, she would layer the melted cheese with crispy slices of ham. It’s just as yummy as it sounds — and honestly, it’s the best way to make grilled ham and cheese sandwich!

    • 2slicesAmerican cheeseor cheese of choice
    • 3tspbutter
  • Add 1 tsp butter to frying pan on medium-high heat. Add slices of ham and cook until crispy, flipping occasionally. Set cooked ham slices aside on a paper towel.

  • Spread one side of each slice of bread with 1 teaspoon butter.

  • Layer slices of cheese and ham.

  • Topping Options To Make A Killer Sandwich

How to Make a Grilled Ham & Cheese Sandwich

You can make your sandwich with just bread, meat and cheese if you desire. Nothing wrong with that my lovely!! But, depending on my mood, I like to add some extra toppings to change the flavor and texture. Here are a few of the things I love to use:

    • Fresh vegetables Tomatoes, green peppers, and avocado are just a few things I use from time to time. When you add sliced tomato to the sandwich, the heat softens the tomato, adding this lovely enhanced tomato flavor. The tomato slice itself adds a bit of extra moisture to the layers, which I find super tasty!

    • Condiments Spicy mustard, mayonnaise, honey mustard, and horseradish are some great options!
    • Other topping ideas Black olives, pickles, and banana peppers would also terrific!

Air Fryer Grilled Ham And Cheese Sandwich Recipe

There’s always a debate in our house about which is better, the simple grilled cheese sandwich, or a meatier version. Since I am the only real fan of ham in the household, I’ll let the others pick their own favorites. I already know that if there’s ham in the refrigerator, I’ll be adding it!

Thin deli-sliced ham is best folded over, but I truly love thick slices of leftover holiday ham best! The flavor from the roasted ham adds so much to an already fabulous sandwich!

More to the point, the air fryer version of these comfort food sandwiches is a true delight! No more not-quite-melted cheese in the center, or having to use American cheese for an easy solution to perfectly melted cheese.

How To Make A Grilled Ham And Cheese Sandwich:

Note about the butter: Bring butter to room temperature before beginning. You want the butter to retain its shape, but not be melted.

Butter each slice of bread on both sides.

Heat a pan to a low-medium heat. Add the two slices of bread to the pan.

Cook until the bread begins to toast up. This will prevent the inside of the sandwich to get soggy. Flip the bread over.

I did one sandwich with Cheddar Cheese and the second sandwich with Swiss Cheese. They are both good melting cheeses are classic in grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. Which one is better? You will have to try it and be the judge.

Put two slices of cheese on each piece of bread. Yes, two. Remember that this is essentially a grilled cheese sandwich, so since cheese is one of the main ingredients, we are being generous. There nothing sadder in the culinary world than anticipating lots of melty cheese and getting a sad little amount. Think of how stingy some places are with the cheese on their pizzas. Sad, right?

In the same pan toss a stack a thinly sliced ham. Put as much as you want, but I suggest at least 6 slices, more would be better. Notice how the ham sizzles as it hits the pan. All the delicious flavors are waking up. It smells good, right? Flip the ham over after a few seconds.

Cover the pan with a lid. Cook until the cheese starts to melt.

Slide the stack of ham on one of the slices of bread.

Sandwich it with the second slice of bread .

Eat whole or slide to a cutting board and cut in half using a knife.
