Baking is a super easy method for cooking salmon that locks in flavor and helps cook salmon evenly. What Is The Best Seasoning For Salmon

My favorite way to season grilled salmon is with a combination of lemon, garlic, fresh herbs, salt and pepper. You can use whatever herbs you have on hand. This recipe calls for parsley and thyme leaves, but other great choices are chives, oregano or dill. Dont have fresh herbs in the house? Try a teaspoon or two of a dried herb seasoning blend such as Italian seasoning.

How To Tell When Salmon Is Finished Cooking

The eternal question! The greatest of salmon crimes is overcooking. Here are the best tips to tell when your salmon is done.

    • You can check for doneness by taking a sharp knife and peeking into the thickest part of your Grilled Salmon in Foil. If it is beginning to flake, but still has a little translucency in the middle, it is done.
    • You can also quickly insert a butter knife into the thickest part of the salmon after about 6 minutes of cooking. Then, remove it and check the temperature of the knife by feeling it. If the knife is lukewarm, the salmon needs more time, but if the knife is medium warm, the salmon should be ready to remove .
    • If your piece is thinner check several minutes early to ensure your salmon does not overcook. If your piece is very thick , it may need longer.

How Do You Know When Grilled Salmon Is Cooked

There are a few ways to tell if your salmon is fully cooked or not, and once you get the hang of cooking and grilling salmon youll become more and more comfortable with judging it based on the look.

  • This is the most technical method for testing if your salmon is fully cooked. Fish should technically be cooked to an internal temp of 145 degrees F using a meat thermometer. However, your salmon will continue to cook a bit more as you let it rest after grilling.
  • As a general rule, Ive found that you should bake salmon for 15 minutes for every inch of thickness.
  • Salmon is fully cooked when it can easily be flaked with a fork and is an opaque, soft pink color instead of bright pink.
  • As I mentioned, its better to undercook rather than overcook your salmon, and remember that it will continue to cook as it rests after you grill it!

How To Make The Grilled Salmon Marinade Recipe

This easy grilled salmon marinade and grilled salmon recipe only takes about 20 minutes to make start to finish. Its excellent for whipping-up at your next cookout or adding to your familys summer weeknight dinner rotation.

Heres how to grill the best salmon with foolproof simple steps:

  • Firstly, if you purchased one whole salmon fillet, go ahead and cut it into 6 individual portions. Gently pat each dry with a paper towel.
  • Then make the marinade: In a small bowl combine the olive oil, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, brown sugar, liquid smoke, salt and pepper. Whisk well until smooth.
  • Generously brush the salmon marinade over the top and sides of each piece.
  • Preheat the grill to medium heat. Once hot, carefully spray the grates with a nonstick grill spray. Or pour oil on a folded paper towel and use a long pair of tongs to rub the oil on the grates.
  • Place the salmon fillets on the grill, flesh side down. Grill for just a couple of minutes to form grill marks.
  • Carefully, use a spatula to flip the salmon fillets onto the skin side. Grill for another several minutes.
  • When you touch the thickest part it should feel slightly firm, but not hard.
  • Once done, lift the salmon off of the grill. If the skin sticks, use the edge of the spatula to separate the skin from the meat and gently lift it off.
  • Place the filets on a platter, and allow the salmon to rest 5 minutes before serving.
  • I hope you give this recipe a try soon, and love it as much as we do!

    Can You Grill Frozen Salmon

Grilling frozen salmon is not recommended, as frozen meats and fish do not cook evenly and so you may end up with some raw parts and some overcooked parts.

Its pretty quick and easy to thaw salmon fillets in a bowl of water, or you can do so in the fridge overnight. Do not thaw the salmon in the marinade.

    How To Grill Salmon

Marinated Salmon with Garlic and Herbs

Cooking salmon on the grill is incredibly simple and the entire process takes less than 30 minutes. If youre unsure how to cook salmon on the grill, Ive shared the basic steps below.

First youll cut that side of salmon into individual fillets. Then transfer to a dish.

Then prep the marinade by mixing together soy sauce, dijon, garlic and olive oil until it fully comes together.

Set aside a few tablespoons of the salmon marinade, then spoon and spread remaining marinade over salmon and spread even. Let rest 10 minute or refrigerate up to 1 hour in marinade. Preheat grill.

Grill the salmon to your desired doneness. Serve warm with remaining salmon marinade over top, garnish with parsley if desired.

How To Make Grilled Salmon In Foil Easy And Perfect Every Time

While you can grill salmon without foil, I find that the foil option is by far the easiest, most effective way to grill salmon.

Using foil to make a packet around the salmon traps moisture. It ensures the salmon turns out perfectly tender and flaky, not dry.

With the foil method, you also dont need to worry about the salmon falling apart or sticking to the grill.

Avoid sad, stuck-on, dry salmon: use foil to grill!

Heres how this recipe breaks down:

  • To Make the Best Grilled Salmon in Foil, Start by Selecting The Best Fish
    • Look for salmon that is bright pink in color, that smells fresh but not fishy, and, if possible, is wild caught.
    • For Grilled Salmon in Foil, I like to ask the seafood counter to remove the skin for me. Again, since the foil holds the fish together, so you dont need the skin to keep it from falling apart.
    • For more information on how to pick salmon, see this Spicy Baked Salmon. I go into more detail about the different types of salmon and which I recommend for various reasons.
  • Lay a Large Sheet of Foil on a Baking Sheet
  • Flavor Layer 1: Place Half of the Herbs and Citrus on the Foil
  • Arrange the Salmon on Top
  • Add Butter, Garlic, and Season
  • Flavor Layer 2: More Herbs. More Citrus.
    • Again, the stronger the herb, the less you will need.
  • Seal the Foil Packet and GRILL!
  • How To Cook Salmon:

You can cook salmon a few different ways. I like to bake salmon in the oven. To cook salmon in the oven, preheat oven to 400 + prepare a lined baking sheet.

Lay salmon pieces on the sheet side by side. Bake for 15-20 minutes until salmon flakes easily with a fork.

You can also cook salmon on the grill. Preheat your grill to 375. Lay salmon in baking dish and pour marinade over it. Allow salmon to marinate for at least 30 minutes.

You can grill the salmon in the dish, but I prefer to lay salmon on grilling mat or wrap in a piece of aluminum foil. Cook for 15 minutes. Do not flip! You can test to see if the salmon is done by seeing if it flakes easily with a fork.

So here are my tips for perfect grilled salmon.

    • Use skin on salmon fillets. The skin holds the salmon together much better when handling on the grill. Serve the salmon with the skin peeled off, or serve as is and let people decide for themselves!

    • Drain excess marinade off the flesh side set it aside for 10 minutes or so to really make the marinade drip off. . This tip is especially relevant when you have sugar in the marinade.

    • Drizzle with oil just before cooking. Key tip!

    • Brush grills generously with oil before heating BBQ

    • Grill salmon on medium or even medium low, if you know your BBQ is very strong. It is safer to cook on a lower rather than higher temperature. You can always cook for longer but cant undo a burnt mess! Key tip!

    • Put the flesh side down first because you just oiled it, and its the more fragile side so its just safer to cook that side perfectly first. The skin side is hardier and can take longer cooking if needed. Plus, its a general rule to cook the presentation side first.

    • Do not move the salmon once you put it on the grill.Key tip! It will initially stick to the grills, then it will release once cooked

If youre a pro griller, you might feel confident enough to skip some of these. But for ordinary folk like myself you dont want to risk the salmon, follow these for grilled salmon success every. Single. Time!!

What To Serve With Grilled Salmon

If Im cooking something non-Asian on the BBQ, its pretty much inevitable that grilled corn makes an appearance too.

Add a garden salad tossed with French Vinaigrette, Italian Dressing or a cooling German Cucumber Salad, plus some crusty bread rolls for a perfect warm weather BBQ dinner.

Please try to ignore the top left corner of the salmon in the photo below. You know full well I went to eat the salmon before I finished taking all the photos I needed.

I suppose my limited Photoshop skills are sufficient enough to have patched that up.

But then I decided to leave it so I could sign off with this vision: that split second when my mouth was wide open and the fork was just about to go in, when I realised that Id forgotten to take the photo below.

Putting the fork down in a huff, pushing the piece of salmon back into place, climbing a little ladder, taking this photo, then 2 seconds later, that piece was gone. ~ Nagi x
