Remove Knobs Control Panel Grates & Flavorizer Bars

Pull up firmly on each knob. Theyre held in place by friction, but may resist if they havent been removed in a long time or ever.

On the grill shown here, the control panel is removed by pulling up on the front edge then sliding it out toward you. On other grills, remove the two screws that hold the panel in place, then lift it out.

Now you can see the igniter button, the white ceramic igniter that sticks into the firebox, and the black and white wires connecting the two parts.

Inside the grill, remove the cooking grates and Flavorizer bars. Now you can see the sheet metal gas catcher that houses the ceramic igniter and collects gas for the spark to ignite.

Now is a good time to brush off the burners and punch out any clogged holes with an opened paper clip or small eyeglass screwdriver. These steps are illustrated in my Spring Cleaning post.

Looking under the igniter button, you can see how the black and white wires connect to it. The black wire inserts into the bottom of the igniter button and the white wire slides onto a connector on the side. At the other end, the black wire is connected to the ceramic igniter at the factory and the white wire slides onto a connector on the edge of the gas catcher.

Remove Replace Install Weber Piezo Module Igniter And Electrode Ignitor

In older Weber models Genesis, Spirit, Summit the ignition module was a simple mechanical push-button piezo module. These old modules only sparked one time with each physical depression but the never stop functioning unless they are somehow physically broken. Which is highly unlikely in a Weber barbecue grill that mounted the control valves and ignition module on the right side shelf, far from the fire box and any flames.

The mechanical push button piezo module was also used in extraordinary high end gas grill like DCS and Lynx and was also the module of choice in hundreds of other brands of barbecue grill. No barbecue ignitor module has been more widely used than the Weber piezo ignitor module.

This instructional video also shows how to replace the electrode and the collector box which is where the ignitor sparks and ignites gas inside the barbecue.

The smaller tab on the collector box is designed to hold the ground wire. Because the fire box is cast aluminum the electrode is not grounded in the collector box as igniters are in thousands of steel and stainless steel and cast iron fire boxes in other barbecue grill models. The Weber module has a round male plug at the tip for the electrode wire but the module has another male tab that is flat on the side of the module. A wire connects from this side tab to the smaller tab bent on the collector box.

Popular Mechanical Igniter Replacement Kits

The two most popular mechanical igniter replacement kits are:

• Weber 7509 Igniter Kit: For Spirit and Genesis , Platinum I and II, Genesis 1000 to 5500, Genesis Silver and Gold , and Genesis Platinum. Does not fit Spirit front-mounted control panel models.

• Weber 7510 Igniter Kit: For Genesis Silver/Gold/Platinum gas grills and Spirit 200/300 gas grills . Does not fit Genesis Silver/Gold C models after 2003.

These kits come with an igniter button that generates the high voltage discharge, a ceramic igniter that makes the spark, a black wire and a white wire, a sheet metal gas catcher that collects gas , and installation instructions. The black wire is connected at one end to the ceramic igniter at the factory.

If you have a grill with a mechanical igniter thats not listed above, call Weber Customer Support at 800-446-1071 to determine the correct igniter for your grill. For example, Ive got a 2002 Weber Summit 450 grill with two mechanical igniters and the replacement part is Weber 901a part that looks identical to the Weber 7509 shown above, but theres some difference between the twoperhaps the wires are a different length.

Buying The Correct Igniter Kit Is Key

Weber has used a variety of igniter kits over the years for different grills. Some kits are mechanical, some are electronic. Some include multiple igniters, some include just one. The wires may be longer in some kits and shorter in others. Its important to get the right kit for your grill because even kits that look alike may not work properly in your specific grill.

Weber does not list the replacement igniter kit part number in your grills owners manual because these part numbers may change over time. The best way to make sure you get the right kit is to call Weber Customer Support at 800-446-0171. Give them your grills model name and serial number and theyll tell you which part number you need. Alternatively, if youre buying at a home center or online, read the box label or product description carefully to make sure the kit covers your specific grill model and year.

How To Replace The Igniter Kit On A Weber Grill

The igniter kit makes lighting your propane grill simple. The kit consists of the igniter module, the wires and electrodes, the push button and battery, and new wire clips. After years of use, the igniter module can wear out no longer producing enough power to make a spark at the electrodes.

Let’s get started.

REMOVING THE IGNITER KIT 1. Remove the lid.

a. Remove the retaining pins from hinge pins at the rear of the lid.

b. Remove the hinge pins from the hinge brackets.

c. Lift the lid away from the cookbox.

2. Remove the grill grates.

a. Remove warming rack. b. Remove the grill grates.

c. Remove the flavorizer bars.

3. Remove the cabinet doors.

a. Insert a screwdriver into the small opening located on the upper-inside corner of the cabinet door.

b. Depress the screwdriver to disengage the locking hinge pin and release the cabinet door.

c. Remove the cabinet door from the grill.

d. Repeat this step to remove the second cabinet door.

4. Remove the control panel bottom.

a. Remove the screws securing the control panel bottom to the upper control panel.

b. Remove the control panel bottom from the grill.

5. Remove the ignitor module.

a. Unscrew the igniter button and remove the battery.

b. Unscrew the retaining ring securing the igniter module to the front of the control panel.

c. Push the igniter module out of the control panel .

d. Disconnect the ignition wires from the igniter module.

6. Remove the control knobs.

7. Remove the control panel.

How To Replace A Grill Igniter Instructions:

Make sure the gas is turned off, your grill is turned off, and it is cool before proceeding.

Before you go to the effort of replacing the igniter module and wires, check the battery inside the igniter button. Remove the igniter button by turning the cover counter-clockwise.

Lift off the igniter button cover to expose the battery.

Pull out the AA battery. Replace with a brand new AA battery and replace the cover. Check to see if your grill will light. If yes, great! If no, keep reading.

Put on your rubber gloves and remove the cooking grates and place them on newspaper or plastic to protect the surface from grease.

Remove the heat deflectors.

Remove the igniter retention nut by turning it counter-clockwise.

Set the retention nut aside where you wont lose it.

Remove the screws for the wind deflector that are underneath the control panel. There are two screws that need to be removed, one on the far right and one on the far left.

Remove the wind deflector. Youll need to tilt the back of it down and then slide it out toward the back to remove.

Remove the igniter module by reaching underneath the control panel and gently lowering module.

There are wires connected to the back of the igniter module. Make a note of where each wire goes so you will be able to connect the new module properly when the time comes. Let the module hang to the side while you remove the control panel.

Unplug the wires from the back of the igniter module.

Lift the control panel off the grill and set aside.

The Virtual Weber Gas Grill

Youve got your steaks seasoned and ready for the grill. You go out to the patio, remove the grill cover, and open the lid.

What greets you is a colony of fuzzy white/green mold on the grates and certain areas of the firebox. Or worse, a fuzzy creature of a different sort, the kind with eyes and nose and whiskers and tail, thats sitting on the Flavorizer bars, staring up at you through the cooking grates, just as surprised to see you as you are to see him.

Types Of Ignition Systems

Prior to the mid-2000s, Weber used a mechanical piezo ignition system in gas grills. When you depress the ignition button, a spring-loaded hammer hits a crystal, generating a high voltage discharge that travels through wires to a ceramic igniter in the firebox, creating a spark next to the burner tube and lighting the gas. These older systems make a loud metallic bang noise when you depress the rectangular ignition button. Each time you depress the button, a spark is generated.

Since the mid-2000s, Weber has used a combination of mechanical piezo ignition systems and battery-powered electronic ignition systems in gas grills. The mechanical ignition system is known as Snap-Jet and is integrated into each gas burner control knob. When the knob is turned to the START/HI position, the mechanical igniter generates a spark that lights the gas. The name Snap-Jet is derived from the loud snap noise that occurs when the knob is turned.

Youll find Snap-Jet igniters on Summit gas grills manufactured from 2003 until time of this writing. On these grills, the igniters are integrated into the gas manifold. If you have a bad igniter, you have to replace the entire gas manifold assembly, a part that costs around $100 at the time of this writing. Not such a great design from a maintenance perspective!

The Go-Anywhere gas grill uses a mechanical igniter.

There are a bunch of different versions of these electronic systems, so making sure you buy the right replacement is critical.

How Do You Replace The Igniter On A Weber Genesis

. Beside this, why is my Weber grill not lighting?

It could be the gas flow or ignition, or a clogged or damaged burner. If none of the burners light, the most likely cause is a lack of gas flowing through the pressure regulator. If the burners all ignite manually, gas flow is good and the problem is most likely with the igniter electrode.

Beside above, do all grill igniters have a battery? Most of our current series of gas grill use a battery powered igniter. If your igniter won’t light your grill, or won’t make a clicking noise when you press the igniter button, the first thing to check is the battery.

Example Of Mechanical Igniter Installation

Im going to demonstrate how I replaced the igniters in my 2002 Summit 450. The steps are similar on most older Weber grills:

• Remove the burner control knobs and control panel to access the igniter parts. Remove the cooking grates and Flavorizer bars to access the gas catcher.
• Remove and replace the igniter parts and gas catcher.
• Test the new parts.
• Put the grill back together.

On my Summit, the knobs and control panel are on the front of the grill and there are two igniters to replace:

On other grills like the popular Genesis 1000, the knobs and control panel are on the right side of the grill and theres only one igniter to replace:

Thats my 1992 Genesis 2 in the photo above, now being used by my parents. Heres how the igniter is configured on that grill, shown with the control panel removed. This is the same on Genesis 1-5 and 1000-5000 grills.

Someday Ill photograph the replacement of the igniter in that grill and post them here. Until then, the photos that follow from my Summit igniter replacement will have to do.
