How To Grill Salmon Burgers From Whole Foods

Health Benefits Of Salmon

HOW TO MAKE GRILLED SALMON BURGERS // FOOD IS LOVE

Salmon is one of my all-time favorite foods. I love its delicate, mild flavor and the way that it manages to taste so indulgent, while actually being quite nutritious! Salmon is a great source of protein and provides plenty of vitamins and minerals including B vitamins, selenium, and potassium. This fatty fish is also loaded with omega-3 fatty acids specifically, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid which are essential for human health.

Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in heart health and have been shown to help reduce the risk of heart disease by protecting against heart arrhythmias, lowering blood pressure, improving blood vessel function, and potentially decreasing chronic inflammation. Additionally, these fatty acids also play a crucial role in cognitive function, neurological development, and mental health. In fact, research suggests that the consumption of omega-3s is linked to decreased symptoms of depression and age-related mental decline.

Unlike many other types of fats, our bodies cannot make omega-3 fatty acids, so its important that we obtain these fats through our diets. Fish, plants, and nut oils contain high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids, with cold-water fish containing some of the highest concentrations of EPA. For this reason, both the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the American Heart Association recommend consuming at least two servings of fatty fish per week.

How Much Salmon Do I Need For These Grilled Salmon Burgers

  • This recipe calls for a pound of salmon. It makes four nice size patties.
  • One pound of salmon is about 1/2 of a large fillet.
  • We love steelhead salmon that we buy at Costco. It has a ton more flavor than the Atlantic farmed version and costs about the same.

It is super easy to remove that pesky salmon skin. All you need is a sharp knife and you are on your way. It doesnt have to be perfect. You are going to mince it all up anyway! Pretty doesnt matter here

Once you have removed the skin, simply give it a good chop.

No need to dirty that food processor. In fact the food processor makes it way to mushy. We are going for big chunky salmon flavor here!

How Do You Know When Salmon Burgers Are Done

In your skillet over medium-high heat, salmon patties will cook in about 5 minutes or so, depending on how thick they are. Salmon burgers are done when you see a nice golden crust on the outside, and the inside should be pink. Your salmon is cooked when it flakes easily at the touch of a fork. And remember, it will continue to cook even after you pull it off the heat, so if your salmon patties are close but not quite cooked to your liking, you can cover them in the skillet briefly with a piece of foil and allow them a couple minutes to finish cooking.

Minute Fresh Salmon Burgers

My love for the kitchen and cooking usually ends at 3pm. Thats when I take one look at the pile of dishes accumulated into numerous perfectly shaped mountains , and wonder if Ill ever find a clean dish or have the time to make one more meal. The feeling must be a universal mom thing, right?! Just like the bathroom and a quiet latte.

Last year, our schedule with two kids, full time blogging and Dustin working outside the home became busier than in previous years. To help simplify our busier schedule, I created a new meal planning list called, Busy Weeknight Meals. The goal of this list was to offer quick dinner solutions for super busy nights when I need to fix a delicious meal that requires very few dishes and a minimal amount of time. This list continues to grow. Each time I create or find a new recipe that qualifies as quick and easy, the recipe name and source is added to the list.

On Saturday mornings I pull out my monthly calendar and the following lists: Family Favorite Meals, Recipes to Try, and Busy Weeknight Meals. Within minutes Im able to create a meal plan that fits our schedule. That, my friend, is the beauty of regular meal planning and organized recipe lists.

How To Cook Smoked Salmon

Smoked salmon is a tender delicacy that is as versatile as it is tasty. FYI, smoked salmon is cured in a solution of salt and sugar and then smoked, while lox is never cooked, chef Danielle Turner writes on her blog, Cooking Clarified.

While you can cook smoked salmon, you don’t have to because it’s already cooked via the smoking process.

Still, if you’d like to cook it, pan-frying it is a nice way to bring out its natural flavors without changing its melt-in-your-mouth softness. Here’s how to do it.

Things You’ll Need

  • oil or white wine

Step 1: Add a bit of olive oil or white wine in the bottom of the skillet to keep fish from sticking or drying out.

Step 2: Place the smoked salmon in the pan and fry on low heat for 2 to 3 minutes.

It’s usually best to add it to a dish as a flavoring at the very end of the cooking time. Snip your smoked salmon into small pieces and scatter them on top of scrambled eggs with onions, over cream sauce for pasta or over salads.

Tip

Smoked salmon is already somewhat dried out from the smoking process, and cooking it too long at a high temperature can dry it out even more.

Because salmon gets unpleasantly tough to chew when it’s dried out, make sure to watch it carefully while frying it. If the smoked salmon starts to turn very dark or curl up at the edges, it’s starting to dry and you should remove it from the heat.

  • Burger buns: I like to use either whole wheat burger buns or ditch the bread entirely and use lettuce leaves for a low carb option. If youre using bread, feel free to also include some lettuce leaves as a topping.
  • Mango slaw: I love how the sweetness of the mango slaw pairs with the salmon burgers. If youre not a fan of sweet and savory, you could use this healthy coleslaw or Ukrainian vinegar coleslaw.

Wine Pairing For Grilled Salmon Burgers

How To Make Salmon Burgers | With Slaw Recipe {Whole30, Paleo}

For red wine, Pinot Noir is a classic pairing for almost any kind of salmon preparation, and this is no exception. For white, stick with something rich and full-bodied, like Chardonnay or Rhone-style white wines. Or for something in the middle, a fruity rosé always works like a charm. The acidity in the rosé will help cut through the richness of the salmon meat.

S To Make These Spinach Feta Salmon Burgers

All you do is:

  • Put the chunks of fish and the spinach in the food processor and blend. Don’t over-process – you want relatively small chunks and combined but not mush.
  • Then add the crumbled cheese, lemon juice and pepper and mix through.
  • Form in to patties and you’re ready to go. Don’t be put off by the fact these are a bit soft with not having any breadcrumbs in there – they will firm up in no time as they cook.

You really don’t need breadcrumbs in these, in my mind, and in fact I think they’d be a distraction from the lovely mellow flavors in there and probably make them less juicy. Although I suspect the Wholefoods ones had breadcrumbs. Either way, I like them without. These work well both on the grill or cooked in a skillet/frying pan on the stove.

I’ve served them with a simple but tasty avocado cream on either burger buns or, as I did here, English or Portuguese muffins for a little bit of a change.

OK I’ll be honest: that’s what they had at the fish shop and I didn’t feel like walking to the main supermarket. But they worked really well, so I’m going with it. Feel free to use what you prefer bread-wise.

So whip up a spinach feta salmon burger or two in no time and enjoy all the lovely mellow flavors yourself. Juicy, a lot better for you than many burger options and pretty too, you know you want to give them a try.
