When To Buy A Grill
Whether youre shopping for a charcoal, gas or electric grill, youll find better prices during certain seasons and holidays. So when is the best time to buy a grill?
There are many promotional markdowns and competition during early summer, but buying off-season is always the best time to save the most.
In recent years, weve actually seen the best deals on grills during early fall.
While there are tons of great deals available on grills right now, we expect to see the best prices in . Although the best sales may take place a little later in the year, the good news is youre not too late to snag a bargain on a new grill!
Labor Day weekend is a great time to shop for a new grill. Many retailers offer sales in honor of the holiday, and this will be a great time to find markdowns and rollbacks on popular grill brands.
Weve seen great prices in the past on Char-Broil grills as well as Weber, Kingsford, Char-Griller, Blue Rhino and more!
Even after Labor Day, youll see prices on grills continue to fluctuate and drop as they become clearance products and retail stock clears out. When you see these deals, be sure to compare prices and grab them fast.
What Time Of Year Do Gas Grills Go On Sale
Grills Go on Sale right after the Fourth of July. Retailers know that the peak of the grilling season is nearing its end and try to move their inventory fast. During the August, September, and October months, stores will mark down BBQ grills aggressively to make room for other season items coming ahead.

When To Find The Best Deals On New Grills
You can usually start to find pretty good prices on grills and smokers starting after the 4th of July. But, if you are really wanting to find the best deals, those are going to happen between September and November as the current grilling season is winding down.
This is usually when there wont be a lot of people shopping for grills and local stores will be wanting to get rid of the remaining ones that they still have to make room for winter holiday inventory.
So, depending on where youre located, you can snag a good grill at a great price and have a brand new cooker to use through the remainder of the year or store it away to use brand new at the start of the next season.
These late summer-early fall deals will usually apply to somewhat standard grills that are good for the average backyard-cooking enthusiast. If you are looking to level up your BBQ game with a more competition-worthy cooker straight from the manufacturer, you may not find as steep of discounts but its not impossible to get a good price.
Look for deals as a new model comes out. In many cases, when new models are released, the previous model can be found on sale on the company website.
How We Tested Gas Grills
Over the course of four days in Spring 2017, we put our gas grills through a battery of tests designed to demonstrate their qualities and highlight their differences. We cooked burgers on high heat to see how well the grills seared meat and how intense and even was the heat they could generate across the whole grate surface. We slow-grilled cut-up chickens to see if the grills could hold a low temperature evenly across the whole grate. And we roasted whole chickens indirectly on both low and high heat to see if the grills could create browned skin and perfectly cook meat without charring. Sam Sifton, editor of the Cooking section of The New York Times joined us for these tests. In 2018 we repeated these tests, pitting the new Weber Spirit II E-310 against our upgrade pick, the Weber Genesis II E-310.
For the high-heat, whole-grate burger testan indicator of the grills ability to pump out uniform, high heat without creating an infernowe heated the grills on high with their lids down for 15 minutes . We then oiled the grates and distributed 12 to 15 6-ounce patties across the whole cooking surface. While the burgers cooked we kept an eye out for flare-upstheyre not desirable, as they char the meat and create rancid smokeand looked at the evenness of cooking on the different areas of the grates. After about 10 minutes of cooking , we compared how well each grill had seared the burgers, looked for any patties that were charred or still unacceptably raw, and took a taste.

Scratch And Dent Opportunities
Another great way to get a deal on a Weber is to look for slightly damaged models at Lowes or Home Depot. I usually find the slightly damaged grills out in the Garden department hidden away from the pristine floor models.
I have spotted multiple gas grills that have been marked down by several hundred dollars because of various degrees of cosmetic damage or missing parts.
Sometimes the damage is as simple as the fact that the grill is missing the burner control knobs or one of the cooking grates. Problems like these are a simple fix that can be resolved with a quick call to Weber customer service.
Sometimes the damage includes dents to the cabinetry, side shelves or lid. This type of damage is a tough call as it does not impact grilling performance but does leave you looking at an ugly grill. Considering that the grill is going to last you at least a decade, that is a long time to be staring at a dent!

Average Cost Of Charcoal Grills
Charcoal grills are almost always more affordable than ones that run on propane or natural gas. A solid charcoal grill will typically retail in the $100 to $300 range, but its common to find even lower prices on some models. There are portable grills online for between $20 and $60, but youll be definitely sacrificing some size and functionalities.
- With the higher-end charcoals, there are useful features like cast-iron grates, removable ash catchers, well-designed air vents/dampers and the ability to fold the shelves for better portability.
- Lower-end models will typically have less durable steel or stainless steel grates and a smaller grilling surface.
The Best Time To Buy Used Grills
If you are wanting to buy a BBQ grill but not wanting to spend the money on a new grill or smoker quite yet, look at buying a used grill. You can get some really great deals on these as well if you know when to look.
When it comes to used grills, the best time to buy one is during the peak moving season, which is during the summer months. This is the time when many people are moving and having big sales to offload the items they will not be taking with them. So, look out for moving sales in your area, check on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, or even local thrift stores. Chances are you can find a lightly used grill at a good price.
Make sure you have the capability while you are out looking to quickly pull up more information on grills you come across. Then you can check the original sale price, features, reviews, etc.

Are You Actually Saving Money
It doesnt matter what it is that youre buying, you want to get the best bang for your buck and not pay more than you have to. We all have this same mentality when it comes to making a purchase. This is why when we see price tags that indicate something is on sale, we immediately think we are getting a good deal. But is that really the case? The answer is no. When it comes to buying your new pellet grill on sale from a distributor or retailer, it means that they are essentially reducing the markup that you have to pay. Aside from the rare instances where a retailer is selling a product as a loss leader where they are intentionally losing money on a product to get you into the store and buy other more profitable products, you will still be paying more money in the end than what the manufacturer would price the grill at if they were to sell it to you directly.
