How Long Should You Cook Beef Ribs On The Grill

Beef Back Ribs on the Weber Kettle Grill | Barlow BBQ

As mentioned, beef ribs require a long time on the grill to thoroughly cook through and still be tender, juicy, and flavorful.

The ribs can take up to 1½-2 hours until they are fully tender. It will depend on the heat of your grill. Remember, slow and consistent works best.

With the beef ribs cooking for such a long time, it is necessary to continue basting it through the process.

Beef ribs are most delicious when they have sauce left on them.

As the late food and beverage specialist Tony Roma’s saying goes, “happiness is best served slow-smoked and sauced.”

Grilling beef ribs in the oven follows the same process as grilling on open flames or a gas grill.

With the oven, you will need to preheat it to around 225°F before placing your beef ribs inside.

Put the meat on the middle rack and allow it to cook for 1½-2 hours, turning a couple of times in between.

You can cover it with foil to ensure it doesn’t dry out and remove the foil in the last 20-30 minutes to brown.

Another way to give that glazed, seared, and charred effect is by turning the oven to the broiler setting, which comes closest to grilling.

Do You Wrap Beef Back Ribs In Pink Butcher Paper Or Foil

You can use either. We recommend wrapping with foil if you want a more tender, steamed rib. However, use pink butcher paper if youd like a consistent bark throughout the cooking process.

Where Can I Find Beef Ribs

When I go to the butcher, I have to ask for beef ribs because they aren’t on display. They usually go back to the freezer and bring them out to me. Each rack will feed about two to three hungry people.

Sometimes the butcher won’t have any frozen ribs, but they come from the rib roast. My butcher will take an entire roast and cut off the entire slab of ribs. These taste just as good as the frozen ones, but sometimes the butcher charges a bit more for them. The butcher will tell you that baby back pork ribs have more meat on them, but they’re smaller. Beef ribs are much larger, so they have more bone. When I compare the amount of meat on beef ribs to baby back ones and the relative cost, I think the beef ones are the better deal. Our butcher charges under $3/lb for the beef, while the pork ones are over $4/lb.

About Cooking On A Charcoal Grill

While grilling with charcoal doesnt offer the instant gratification of cooking on a gas grill, the results are more than worth the extra time and effort youll put in. The meat will sear more evenly, and a charcoal fire will impart more rich, smoky flavor than a gas flame. This difference isnt as noticeable if youre grilling pre-cooked sausages such as bratwurst, but when youre using the grill for long, slow cookingas with this smoked beef back ribs recipeyoull definitely appreciate the boost in flavor.

Look for charcoal with as few additives as possible. If its advertised as additive-free, thats the kind you want. Avoid any match light varietiesthese contain lighter fluid additives that will adversely affect the flavor of your meat. You should also steer clear of briquettes that advertise real mesquite flavor or something similar. If youve done your work properly, the meat will achieve that flavor on its own.

If you can find lump charcoal, consider using this in your smoker instead of briquettes. Lump charcoal is actually wood that has been fired into charcoal, so it burns more cleanly and produces less ash than briquettes, which are typically formed out of sawdust. It also burns hotter, but this shouldnt be a problem as long as your smokers adjustable air vents are in good working order.

Pork ribs are pretty ubiquitous. However, its pretty uncommon these days to go to a barbecue where beef ribs are served. They should be served more often because theyre fantastic! If you want to do something a little different, thats very easy to barbecue and very delicious, I suggest giving beef ribs a try.

Cooking up this somewhat uncommon dish is a breeze. All you need is a slab of beef ribs, an easy spice rub recipe, a barbecue, and time to cook them at a low temperature for a few hours.

How Long To Smoke Beef Back Ribs

The whole smoking, wrapping, and resting process, takes about 5 1/2 hours. However, I always recommend cooking to temperature and texture instead of just setting a timer. The timelines with BBQ are always just loose suggestions to keep you on track with your cooks. These ribs could be done in as little as 4 hours or they could take closer to 6, depending on how thick your ribs are, the temperature in your smoker, and other factors.

After wrapping the ribs, youll want to start checking them after 90 minutes in the smoker. You are looking for texture/feel and temperature. The ribs are done when they are very flexible and the meat has pulled back significantly from the end of the bones. When you insert your meat thermometer, it should glide into the meat like it is softened butter. Be sure to use a nice instant-read thermometer to check those temperatures!

    Smoking Times & Temperatures

    Tangy Grilled Back Ribs

It will take approximately 3 to 5 hours to cook beef back ribs at 275°F, and for the internal temperature to reach 203°F. Time will vary depending on meat thickness and your smokers heat retention. Always use a smoker thermometer to ensure you get an accurate reading of your beef ribs doneness.

Ribs are safe to eat when they reach an internal temperature of 145°F , but they will still be tough. Smoking them to reach 203°F allows the fat and collagen within the meat to render, giving you a more mouth-wateringly tender slab of ribs.

Which Side Of Aluminum Foil Is Toxic

Aluminum foil is actually made of two layers: one of aluminum, another that is coating. The surface of the aluminum layer that is in contact with the atmosphere oxidizes and turns into aluminum oxide hence the matte side. In that case, we should use the shiny side, since aluminum oxide is not that healthy.

Where To Buy Beef Back Ribs

Butchers can get more money per pound selling the high-value rib eye meat on top of the bones than they can sell the meat as back ribs. They trim back ribs down, leaving little meat above the bone. This aggressive trimming means you can see some of the bones peeking through the meat. Try and find back ribs with as much meat on them as you can and look for good fat marbling.

Beef back ribs are pretty affordable since they tend to be cast-offs from the rib eye production process. Look in the beef section of your grocery store or go right up to the counter and ask. A good butcher will be more than willing to sell you the back ribs and earn some money on a cut that often gets discarded. If you cant find them in a store near you, we have ordered them from Felton Angus Beef with great success.

How To Grill Beef Ribs In Foil

While many people like to grill beef ribs directly over an open flame, some genuinely prefer to use foil packets instead.

Grilling beef ribs in foil would follow a similar process as doing it without foil.

The difference is that you will need to place the marinated beef ribs on a reasonably sized piece of foil that will fold over and seal tightly.

You will then place the foil pack on the grill on indirect heat. The foil will trap steam and help the ribs cook much quicker without drying it out.

The meat will retain all its juices by absorbing it back while cooking, and you will end up with the most delicious, tender, and flavorful grilled beef ribs.

Prepare And Apply Your Rub To All Sides Of The Ribs

Lightly coat your ribs but do not overseason. Be prepared to move your ribs to the grill within 10 to 20 minutes of applying the spices. Any longer than an hour and any rubs will begin to change the texture of the meat. Some accept this for additional flavoring.

*Pro-tip #1 If you apply a light coat of mustard to your ribs before the rub you will help the spices stick to the meat during cooking. You will never taste the mustard, and the smoke can penetrate the meat just fine.

*Pro-tip #2 To give your ribs more flavor, you can apply the rub, wrap the ribs tightly in plastic, and refrigerate them for up to 24 hours.

How To Tell That Your Beef Ribs Are Done

It takes long for beef ribs to be tender. One of the signs of tenderness is that the bone begins to fall off. You will know that the rib is done when the internal temperature reaches 200°F. You can cook them a bit longer for them to be completely done.

If you dont have a thermometer to measure the internal temperature, you can gently lift the rib bone. If the rib falls off, the beef is done. If you want to try this, ensure that you use a kitchen towel to prevent Another option is to use your thong to twist the center rib the ribs are ready if it falls out easily.

You can also cut into the meat to see if it is done. If there is no pink, the meat is done completely. Lastly, you can use a toothpick to check. The meat is done by inserting a toothpick into the flesh and removing it easily.

Tricks To Using A Gas Grill

While you can turn out beef ribs from a gas grill that are just as delicious as the next persons, you will have to make a few adjustments. However, you cannot beat the convenience of a gas grill.

If you are new to the art of barbecuing, gas grills are more forgiving as they do not get as hot as charcoal grills. They also do not require the setup and the intense babysitting of their charcoal cousins. Finally, gas grills are much easier to clean.

The challenges you will face with a gas grill are flavor and smoke. Smokers and charcoal grills run circles around the gas grill on smoke production. You can somewhat get around this by using a smoker box or a smoke bomb.

While you can easily create juicy and tasty beef ribs with a gas grill, you may often struggle to obtain that signature barbecue flavor. Here is where the strategic use of sauce and wood comes into play.

You cannot exactly replicate the subtle blend of wood and charcoal flavors you get from a charcoal grill or the bold smoky accents from a smoker. Your ribs, however, will have a signature flavor of their own.

*Pro-tip A gas grill will not produce a large amount of smoke. Nevertheless, this is a good thing because excess smoke in a gas grill will ensure your food has a bitter flavor.

What kind of wood should you use on a gas grill? Use a dry hardwood. For beef ribs, you will do very well with mesquite, oak, or hickory. You can also try cherry.

Should I Wrap Beef Back Ribs When Smoking

    Scott Hibb

There are two sides to wrapping ribs in foil or butcher paper. The paper can limit the amount of smoke that goes into the meat. This is good in that it also helps you control the color and the flavor of the meat. Wrapping in butchers paper, also known as parchment paper, also helps to seal in moisture and keep the ribs tender.

The other reason why you need to be wrapping up your ribs is that it helps speed up the process by isolating the temperatures. However, it is essential to make sure that you wrap them at the right time.
