Dont Overcook Your Salmon
Even though you are cooking with steam, you still want to avoid overcooking the salmon. Medium rare salmon is best for fresh salmon. Cooking it past that point just dries it out and makes the texture far less appetizing.
If you are cooking one inch thick bone-in fillets, then you can expect it to be done in 15 to 20 minutes at about 350 to 375 degrees f. If you are doing a thin slice of the tail end, a half-inch or less thick, then it will be about half that.
Salmon cooks quickly. The one thing about foil tenting it you cant see or test easily for doneness. So you have to trust in time and temperature to do the job.
When it is getting close you CAN temp it through the foil, but thatll poke a hole and let some of the steam escape.

How To Grill Salmon
Lauren Habermehl for Taste of Home
- 1/2 teaspoon minced fresh rosemary
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 4 salmon fillets
Editors Tip: You can skip the garlic, lemon and rosemary for an even simpler grilled salmon recipe.
Step 1: Prepare the grill
The best way to keep the salmon from sticking is to start with a clean, preheated grill. Youre looking for medium-high heat, or 400 to 450° F. For a charcoal grill, prepare the coals until theyre covered with gray ash and spread them out in an even layer. When you can hold your hand five inches above the coals for 3 to 4 seconds, the grill is ready to go. For a gas grill, turn the burners to medium-high and close the cover for about 15 minutes.
When the grill is fully preheated, clean the grill grates before moving on to the next step.
Step 2: Grill the salmon

In a small bowl, mix the garlic, lemon zest, salt, rosemary and pepper rub over the salmon fillets. Let stand 15 minutes.
For a simpler take, rub each side of the salmon with a little bit of cooking oil and season with a sprinkle of kosher salt and pepper.

Step 3: Let it rest

Salmon is no different from any other meat: It needs to rest after cooking. Given the fillets small size, you should only need about five minutes. Then, peel off the skin and serve.

Foil Pack Grilled Salmon With Lemony Asparagus
Grilling fish can be a totally daunting process. Worrying about cooking it correctly and not tearing apart the delicate fillets can bring unnecessary stress to your cookout. With addition of asparagus, these foil packs make grilling a salmon dinner a breeze. Cooking the packs over high heat will help to sear the fish while generating enough steam to fully cook the salmon and the asparagus. Your salmon will cook slightly faster if your pieces are thinner, but you can check for doneness by piercing a sharp knife into the fish in the foil. If the fish is flaking and light pink then you’ll know your salmon is done.

Do You Need To Flip The Salmon
If you are cooking the salmon in foil, you need to flip the salmon in the grill. Just place the salmon inside the foil with skin side down and then palace it directly on the grill grate.
There is no need to flip the salmon since the foil inside will create an evenly heated environment. This is perfect for grills that do not have the best grill grates.
You can also make this on your cast-iron skillet if you are not confident with the grill grates. I do this when the grill grates that I use are pretty thin to hold the salmon in place.

What Is The 10 Minute Rule For Cooking Fish
Cook fish about 10 minutes per inch, turning it halfway through the cooking time. For example, a 1-inch fish steak should be cooked 5 minutes on each side for a total of 10 minutes. Pieces less than 1/2 inch thick do not have to be turned over.
How Long Does Salmon Need To Be On The Grill
Cooking salmon on the grill should not take more than 15 minutes to finish. This is especially true as you rarely need to flip the salmon when grilling it directly on the grill grates.
Your salmon can finish cooking in just 10 minutes, depending on the temperature you are using. The grill can cook the salmon perfectly with just a few minutes and add some flavors.
The most reliable way to know how long you should cook the salmon is by considering the thickness of the salmon. You get to control the temperature, but how long entirely depends on the thickness.
So make sure that you get the right thickness of salmon and time it according to the thickness. That way, you will always have a perfectly cooked salmon in foil on your grill grates.
