How To Make Air Fryer Ham And Cheese Sandwiches

The Best Grilled Ham and Cheese Ever | SAM THE COOKING GUY

Making grilled ham and cheese sandwiches is so easy, which is why it’s a perfect beginner meal. To begin, spread a light coating the bread with butter. Only on one side of the slices of bread. If you are using mustard and mayonnaise, spread on the other bread slices.

To assemble the sandwiches, add a slice of cheese in center of bread and a slice of ham on top of the bottom piece of bread. Then, top that, with another slice of bread butter side up.

Place in the air fryer basket without overlapping or stacking the sandwiches. If you don’t have a basket style air fryer, place the sandwiches on the air fryer tray, and then put the sandwich in air fryer.

Air Fry at 370 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-12 minutes, flipping the sandwich half way through the cooking process. The sandwich is done when it is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

Quick Ham And Cheese Melt In The Air Fryer

The hot circulating air cooks the sandwich quickly and all the way through to melt the cheese. It so simple, you might wonder why cook it in the air fryer instead of the pan. Well, the #1 reason is because theres hardly anything to wash. No washing of a pan is needed. All you need to do is to wipe down your air fryer basket or rack and youre done!

How Do You Make This Grilled Ham And Cheese Melt

So with todays grilled sandwich, I simply used the artisan bread that I mentioned earlier. Keep in mind, this sandwich is plenty big for two people to share. If you serve it with some of the things I mentioned above, two people can enjoy this epic sandwich!!

I cut two nice big slices and then buttered one side of it. This buttered side will be the BOTTOM layer of the sandwich.

After that, I just started layering the ingredients. I like putting cheese on both the bottom and top, kind of sandwiching the ham in the middle.

Then, put the other piece of bread on top of the cheese. I buttered the outside so that when you flip the sandwich in the pan, will become the bottom piece. I know it might sound confusing, but in the recipe below, I explain it a bit better!

I used a nice thin black forest ham for this sandwich. I like the briny flavor against the creamy, gooey-ness of the melted cheddar. Which, btw, was an old or sharp cheddar. And as a side note, please use butter, not margarine for the bread. This kind of sandwich is just taken to the next level when you use real butter!

The other key is to fry it low and slow. If you grill it too quickly, the bread will burn before the cheese melts. You want the sandwich to warm slowly, so the cheese gets a chance to get all melty and yummy as the bread toasts or, grills, in the pan.

When its done grilling, turn it out onto a nice board and give it a minute or two to settle. Then slice, and ENJOY!!

Whole Wheat I love the taste of whole wheat bread, and it is one of my go-to bread choices. Its a basic but somewhat healthier version of white bread. It would do very well if you were to grill it with the sandwich ingredients.

Can I Use Something Besides Butter For Cooking Grilled Cheese

You actually can. While butter is the most common, you can actually use mayonnaise instead of butter. I know, it sounds a bit crazy – but it works, and it’s yummy. Just replace the butter being spread on the bread with spreading a thin layer of mayo.

Once it cooks up nice and crispy, it will look just like butter AND there is no taste of mayonnaise at all. We’ve been doing this for years – and it works!

Grilled Ham And Swiss Cheese Sandwiches

One of the best things about ham is also one of the worst things about ham. There are always a lot of leftovers! We love leftovers around here it means I dont need to cook every single night. But after a while, leftovers from the same meal can get pretty boring. Using your leftovers in different recipes is a great way to finish up whatever is in your refrigerator.

Ham and Swiss cheese is a classic combination. And when you make it a grilled cheese sandwich, its that much better! I dont like mustard very much, but John does. If you like mustard, add some in when youre making the sandwich, or keep some on the side for dipping.

Swiss cheese melts very nicely. It pulls a little like mozzarella, but isnt quite as stretchy. Perfect in a sandwich! We prefer Baby Swiss, if you can find it. It has a milder flavor. And when youre using leftovers from a flavorful ham like this Slow Cooker Cinnamon-Honey Ham, you dont want to cover up those flavors with a strong cheese.

We really like ham sandwiches on seeded rye bread. If youre not crazy about rye bread or you have a different favorite, use that one. The best thing about grilled cheese sandwiches is that you can customize them however you want!

What Choices Are There For Ham

Ham is one of those items that you can add to your basic grilled cheese sandwich to take it to the next level. But what ham do you use? There are so many choices!!

I prefer to go to the deli counter to purchase my ham. If you are in a hurry, then skip the deli counter and go straight to the prepackaged deli meat section.

Either way, you have a lot of options though! You have several flavor choices and then you must decide on how thick you want it!

My choice is a boiled ham that is shaved thin. Not falling apart thin, but the notch right before falling apart. But I do not always get that when I order it.

    Here are some ham options:

Cooked Ham my ham of choice. Honey Ham adds sweetness but doesnt overpower. Smoked Ham a wonderful home-style flavor! Black Forest Ham cut thinly. Off the Bone Smoked Ham Just like grandma used to make. Brown Sugar Ham fresh delicious flavor in their natural juices. Leftover Holiday Ham Boiled ham slices work great also!

Did I Hear Something About Grilling With Mayonnaise

    Christy

Now I read something new the other daythat grilling with mayo works better than butter. They said that the mayo browned a bit more slowly making it more likely to get the cheese melted before the sandwich is too dark. So I made one with butter one with mayo.

Unfortunately I used the dark rye, so all I can say is that both worked and tasted about the same.

I also had a little leftover hollandaise, so I tried that too, figuring it was very similar to mayo in ingredients. Well this time the hollandaise clearly got darker. Still it was pretty and tasty. As was the buttered version.

In the end I felt there wasnt enough difference to matter a lot. Well, unless youre trying to use up hollandaise and conserve butter.
