How To Grill Whole Vegetables
Many vegetables can be grilled whole quite easily. Here are a few popular choices:
Corn: Grill unshucked corn for about 30 minutes, until the husk is blackened. Find a step-by-step guide here.
Peppers:Roast peppers over the grill in a snap. Place clean, whole peppers over the grill and cook until the skins have blackened and crisped, the interior is meltingly tender, about 10 minutes.
Romaine lettuce: Strange, but true: you can grill lettuce! Grill for about five minutes, until wilted and charred. Tasty in a Caesar salad or one of these other grilled salad recipes.
What Type Of Grill Is Best
When buying a new outdoor grill, the two biggest players are gas and charcoal â but electric, kamado and pellet grills are also fair game. When selecting what type of grill to buy, consider how often you’ll be grilling, the amount of space you have for storage, what flavor you prefer and the amount of time and attention you’ll want to spend cooking. Here are the basics on each:
- Dual grill zones
- Need to be near an electrical outlet

How To Start A Charcoal Grill
Charcoal is going to be the most different. If youre using coals deemed match light , you should be able to simply light them with a match. Otherwise, youll need to add some lighter fluid to your coals before you introduce a flame. Its important to heed any warnings on the charcoal and the lighter fluid when lighting your charcoal grill. Dont use too much lighter fluid, and light your coals immediately after applying the fluid to them. Once the coals have a light gray ash to them, theyre ready to be spread around, and youre ready to cook.

Properly Prep Your Grill: Clean And Season
Once you figure out what kind of grill you have, you can start to prep it. The first step to any great grilling experience is to ensure your grill is clean. For steel or cast iron grates, use a stiff bristled steel brush to get any gunk, grime, or rust off. For porcelain-coated cast iron, use a nylon bristled brush to avoid scratching. Your grill may actually have a special tool that fits the contours of the grates. If it does, use that. Next, make sure the bottom of the grill is clear of any debris. Sometimes, things can get stuck and block the heat source. This is particularly common with charcoal grills as ash and coals from the last grill session could be left inside.
Next, its time to season your grill grates . This step helps create a non-stick cooking surface. Apply a thin, even layer of canola oil to the grates before turning on the heat. In my experience, the best way is to use something like Pam and spray it on, then wipe away any excess with a paper towel. Remember: A thin, even layer is what youre going for. Too much oil will burn and create a buildup you dont want!

It Requires A Certain Level Of Proficiency
Grilling is more than just the process of cooking. But it is an art and a skill. Having the eyes and the nose to identify what is good grilled food requires practice.
Some people can cook barbecue with their eyes closed, but a greenhorn might still not produce an excellent grilled meal even with constant focus.
Also, grilling requires the skill on how to do it. Believe it or not, there is a science behind it. One must never make the mistake of focusing on aesthetics without understanding its underlying effects.
Sure, grill marks look good but overdoing it may cause health concerns. Burnt and overly charred food contains carcinogens that are bad for your health. Aside from this, burned food does not taste as good!
If you want to attain the perfect level of crisp and juiciness along with that aesthetic look, ask your barbecue master buddy for help, and you will get the hang of it.

The Grilling Process Excites Your Senses
Grilling is not just a cooking method. It is an experiential activity that stimulates the senses. The final output of the food is not the only thing you will enjoy eating but even producing it.
All your five senses: sight, smell, hearing, touch, and taste will be feasting over whatever it is you have set on the barbeque.
Be it burgers, pork chops, chicken, or veggies. Here is how grilling stimulates your senses:
- Sight Seeing the grill marks on your food and the juice oozing out of them is a winner. By grilling your food, you get to estimate how you want it served and how you want it to look like after.
- Smell One factor that influences our sense of taste is the smell. That smoky, delicious aroma barbeque emanates is when the meat juice starts dripping and evaporates along with the smoke. This familiar aroma makes you more excited to dig into your food.
- Hearing Aside from the smell, how the food sizzles is a very enticing experience.
- Touch Nothing beats a crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside type of barbeque.
- Taste The highlight of the experience is the taste. It is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. What is the point of stimulating your other senses if you do not get to taste what you grilled, right? Regardless, we are sure that grilled food will always taste better than those that are not.

Once youre done with your meal, youre going to want to return the grill in the condition that you found it . To do that, youre going to first burn off any cooked-on food or sauce. To do this, turn the heat up, and let it cook, with the lid down, for about 15 minutes. Once those 15 minutes have passed, turn off the grill. If working with electric, unplug it. If working with propane or gas, close the appropriate valves to ensure gas stops flowing to the unit. Next, let the grill cool down. Once the grill is cool, youre going to repeat your cleaning and seasoning steps . This will help reduce rust, and ensure the grills longevity. Finally, if you have a grill cover, put it on. This protects the grill from the elementsespecially water!
