A whole chicken breast is a single muscle that weighs from 5 to 8 ounces. The cooking time will depend on its size and thickness.

However, grilling boneless chicken breasts usually only takes 12 to 15 minutes over direct medium heat.

It is best to flip the breasts about halfway through to evenly cook both sides and avoid burning them.

Chicken breasts are skinless, so its important to thoroughly clean and season your grill before cooking them.

It will take longer to grill bone-in chicken breasts, most likely around 25 minutes.

Nutrition Of Skinless Boneless Chicken Breast

As mentioned, chicken breast is a healthy meal option for those of us who eat animal protein and prefer it lean. Here are some of the values for a 3.5 ounce cooked portion of chicken breast:

How Long To Grill Boneless Chicken Tenderloins? Grilled Chicken Tenders serve as a culinary bridge between my inner child, who was a picky eater and ordered chicken fingers at every restaurant, and my outer adult, who is picky about her chicken fingers: the chicken must be moist and juicy, the flavor must be on point, and Im probably in a hurry, so please dont ask me to spend more than a few minutes cooking them.

To finish, turn the chicken frequently on the grill, or about every 2-3 minutes.

Video of the Day

The secret behind grilling chicken breasts lies in the preparation. Follow these tips to learn how to make chicken on a gas grill for the very best results.

Turn On The Heat At The Right Level

An optimum heat level is crucial for perfectly done chicken. Chicken is a delicate item. Therefore, you should be careful with the heat level while grilling chicken breasts. Too much heat for even a minute will dry out your chicken and ruin your hard work. Too little heat will take excessive time to finish and may even leave the interior undercooked. Many people find undercooked meat unappetizing. It also raises safety concerns.

Medium heat level is the key for tender, tasty and moist chicken.

If you have little or no prior experience you might be wondering how you can ensure medium heat level.

Here is how its done. Just keep your hand about five inches above the burning grill. If you can comfortably keep your hand still for 4 to 6 seconds, then the heating level is medium.

How To Grill Juicy Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts

If you peruse the many, many chicken recipes on this site, you’ll find me bashing skinless, boneless chicken breasts for grilling over and over again. That’s because these relatively flavorless pieces of meat are, while incredibly ubiquitous, one of the more difficult standard meats to get right. That’s due to a combo of a hot fire and their lack of fat which can quickly render them dry and unpleasant, so rather than risk releasing a recipe that can easily not output the intended results, I more often than not opt for the much more forgiving and flavorful chicken thighs. All is not bad in boneless, skinless chicken breast land though, and if you’re armed with the knowledge of why they’re notoriously difficult to get right and how to deal with those pitfalls correctly, you’ll be on the road to the juiciest grilled chicken breasts possible.

How To Tell When Chicken Is Done

The internal temperature of the chicken should reach 165 degrees Fahrenheit in order to be safe to eat.

It is important to use an instant-read thermometer to measure the temperature, as it will give you an accurate reading.

Boneless Chicken Breast Or Bone

Boneless chicken breasts wont have as much flavor as the bone-in/skin-on variety. Thats why basting in BBQ sauce at the end of the cooking time is where youll find a lot of flavor. And when seasoned and cooked correctly, even my recipe for basic sauce-less grilled chicken breasts can taste flavorful and juicy every time.

Most chicken eaters prefer the white meat of chicken breasts. So for chicken thats cooked quick, I use basic, skinless, boneless chicken breasts. Of course you can use this same cooking method for skin-on, bone-in BBQ chicken breasts, or for legs and thighs too. The technique is the same, the cooking times will vary.

Larger chicken breasts do not always translate to better chicken. Bigger breasts take longer to cook, and cook unevenly or overcook. Look for chicken breasts that are between 6 to 9 ounces per piece. If youre chicken breasts are thin on the ends and fat in the middle, trim the thin ends off so they dont crisp and burn..

If you want an extra fast BBQ chicken breast, slice your boneless breasts in half lengthwise to make two thin cutlets. Theyll cook in half the time.

How Long Do You Grill Chicken Breasts And How Do You Know When They Are Done

For thinner boneless chicken breasts, it generally takes about 3 to 5 minutes on each side but it also depends on how hot the grill gets.

The most reliable method to know when chicken is finished cooking is to use an instant-read thermometer. Normally, I would tell you to cook any poultry to 165°F. After all, that is what the USDA guidelines have determined for food safety.

Im going to tell you a better way and it doesnt deviate from the USDA food safety guidelines. If you cook the chicken breasts to 150°F and maintain that temperature for 3 minutes, you will achieve the same food pasteurization as a chicken breast that cooks to 165°F.

Not only will the chicken breast that you cook at the lower temperature be safe to eat, but it will also be juicier, plumper, and more tender.

Thats because pasteurization is not just about temperature. It involves a factor of both temperature and time. The USDA has a time-temperature table that outlines the guideline.

So I generally try to cook my chicken breasts between 150°F and 155°. If you cook it to 150° you need to hold the temperature there for a minimum of 3 minutes. However, if you cook it to 155°F you only need to hold it at that temperature for 50 seconds. To be clear, these time-temperature guides are based off a chicken breast that has a 7% fat content .

If you only remember one temperature, its 165 degrees F . This is the minimum safe internal temperature of chicken.

While you want to cook your legs and thighs a bit higher, you will know that theyre safe to eat.
