How We Designed Our Wood Pellets

When it came time to make a pellet for the Grilla Grills line of products we took it very seriously. We wanted to make the best wood fuel pellets on the market. We tested all the top brands, took pages and pages of notes comparing everything from heat output and flavor to efficiency and ash created. We also went to several factories and asked the hard questions concerning the use of flavor oils, additives, fillers, and woods such as Alder. We wanted to ensure what we put our name was hands down the best pellets for our grills.

Once all the data was compiled and the interviews were;done we found some commonality between the top brands.

1. They only used high-quality wood and nothing else in their pellets. No flavor oils, binders or any other additives were used or needed when the best woods were used.

2. Hardwood species such as Oak was the primary ingredient used even in their blended pellets. Alder avoided since it was determined to not create as much heat and could attribute to flameout issues in some pellet smokers.

3. This keep it simple but honest philosophy of pellet manufacturing hands down created not only the best burning pellet but the most flavorful food. The rich flavors of the right pellet fuel was genuinely a difference you could taste.

Pellet Grilling Isnt A Fad Its The Future Heres Why

Invented in the 1980s, the wood pellet grill was once dubbed the grill of the future. Its finally earned that title.

It used to be that pellet grilling was for nerds. Invented in the 80s by a guy who owned a heating company in Oregon, wood pellet grills are powered by electricity and fueled by wood pellets. An auger pushes compressed wood from a holding chamber on the side of the grill to a fire pot under the grates, where a temperature gauge and a fan work together to maintain a stable heat.

The first wood pellet grills, all made by Traeger Grills, did not seriously threaten the dominance of their gas and charcoal counterparts. Those days are gone. Here are four reasons why pellet grills are here for good.

Storing Pellet Grills Indoors Or Covered

Another important step in prolonging the lifespan of a pellet grill is storing the grill indoors or covered.

Pellet grills have electrical components and the grill itself is made of metal. Although the grill has rust-resistant paint, the pellet grill can and will begin rusting once the water seeps through the paint and reaches the metal.

Storing the pellet grill in the garage or placing a cover on it will help protect the grill from the elements.

Similar to a gas or charcoal grill, you want to keep your pellet grill away from the elements in order to make sure the grill lasts longer.

Are Lumberjack Pellets Any Good

Based on my experience the Lumberjack pellets are okay, but not worth the extra money. They are 100% premium pellets, making them safe to use in your Pit Boss or any other pellet grill.

That said, youll need to do more maintenance, otherwise, you could reduce the lifespan of your grill and run into other issues.

Different meats have different safe temperatures for when they are done, however smoking temperatures stay pretty consistent. While some go closer to 250°F or 275°F, the general rule is to go for 225°F. If in doubt, go for 225°F.

How To Shut Down A Pellet Grill How To Turn It Off Properly

Best Pellet Grills of 2020

This is another area where pellet grills are different than other types of grills. You dont just let it burn itself out, turn it off, or unplug it. You first want to stop feeding pellets to the flame by turning the control knob to the lowest smoke setting and leaving the door or lid open. Then, give it about 5 minutes to finish burning whats already in the firebox. Then you can turn it off which could be by turning the knob to off or by pressing and holding the button till the lights go off on the control panel. I usually run a grill brush over the grates a few times to clear off any bits of meat while its still hot.

The grill or smoker may continue to make fan noise for a few minutes more before going silent. At that point, you can unplug it. It may need more time to cool down before putting a cover on it, but otherwise, youre done and can close the door or lid and go enjoy your food.;

Check on your grease catch because it will eventually need to be emptied now and then. Other than that, keep it clean and dry and you should be able to enjoy many years of grilling or smoking.

Are Pellet Grills Considered Grills Or Smokers

Pellet grill manufacturers will tell you they are both. But they have more in common with convection ovens than the offset wood-burning smokers they resemble when viewed in profile. A fan circulates heat and smoke through the cook chamber, which exit via vents or a chimney. The heat generated by the combustion of wood pellets is of the indirect variety, meaning the food is not directly exposed to the fire. Smoke is produced by the smoldering pellets in the burn pot and is most prolific at low and slow temperatures .

If its really smoky flavors that you love, you might be disappointed by the subtlety of food barbecued on a pellet grill. There are ways around this, though. You can add foil pouches of wood chips or pellets to the cook chamber, invest in a smoking tube, or even put chunks of hardwood directly on the diffuser plate.

What Uses More Power: Electric Smoker Vs Pellet Smoker

The difference in power usage between an electric smoker and a pellet smoker comes from the source of the heat.

Pellet smokers use wood pellets in order to fuel the fire, creating your desired temperature with the help of the auger and the fans.

Electric smokers on the other hand rely on electricity to power the heating element that provides the heat. The heat in an electric smoker works more like a conventional oven, with the addition of smoking wood chips to create the smoke.

Electric smokers, because they rely on this electricity to produce heat, use approximately 16 more power. This is, for the electric smoker around 800 Watts vs. around 50 Watts for the pellet smoker.

Pellet Grill Construction And Insulated Blankets

If you are in the market for a new wood pellet grill, and especially if you live in a generally cold climate or you intend to use the grill in the winter months, you need to choose your pellet grill carefully. Ive discussed this previously in my article on can you use a pellet grill in cold/winter weather, so Ill just quickly reference those points here in the context of running costs. Using the grill in cold weather is possible, though that cold weather will try and pull the heat out of the grill. Therefore, in the colder months, you should generally expect higher pellet consumption figures, as you would expect higher fuel consumption figures on any type of BBQ. However, there are means to try and address the additional heat loss.

Choosing The Right Pellets For Your Meal

All pellet grills use wood pellets of the same size and all reputable brands offer safe, food-grade woods that will offer comparable burn times and heat, so you dont have to put too much thought into the brand you choose for your grills wood pellets.

What you do need to think longer and harder on is what flavor and aroma profile you want for the meats youre smoking.

For ribs, chops, and pork in general, a savory smoke is best think hickory or mesquite, with the latter being the more potent flavor profile, and the former better for long, slow smoking sessions.

For pellet grilling beef, a pecan, maple, or other wood thats on the sweeter side is ideal for balancing the bold flavor inherent in this type of meat.

With chicken or other poultry, you can play around just like you can when stir-frying, baking, or otherwise preparing the essentially blank canvas that is white meat. Cherry pellets can add sweetness, alder woods a smokiness, and pecan or other nut trees a savory nuttiness that will sink deep into the meat.
