Donts Of Bbq Cleaning

  • DONT remove all the greaseWhile you might want to clean your BBQ, you also wouldnt want to remove all the grease and leave it like that. Oils protect the BBQ from rust and prevent dirt from sticking.
  • DONT use harsh chemicals for cleaning a BBQHarsh chemicals will affect the taste of the food afterwards and can harm the finish of the BBQ and its components.
  • DONT use abrasive scrubbers BBQs with stainless steel finishTo preserve the perfect finish of a stainless steel BBQ, avoid abrasive materials when cleaning. A detergent or a wool cloth will scratch the surface, and it will never look as new. Cleaning in circular motions is a no-no. Test on one little spot before you continue cleaning the whole BBQ.
  • DONT disassemble gas componentsWe strongly suggest you dont try to disassemble the gas components of a BBQ because its a safety hazard. If not assembled right, you might have a trip to the hospital instead of having a BBQ party. So its best to leave the gas components as they are.

Preparing Grill For Indoor Storage

Similar to outdoor storage, grills that are going to be stored indoors will need the same deep-cleaning and care. Follow the same cleaning steps to ensure no grease, food, or environmental debris is left in or on the grill.

Fuel sources should be turned off at the source. Hoses should be disconnected, cleaned, and the ends wrapped to keep insects out.

A grill cover is an excellent idea to protect from dust, scratches, bugs, and animals, whether stored indoors or outdoors. The main difference between keeping a grill inside or outside is that a propane tank should never be stored inside. Cold weather will not harm a propane tank.

How To Clean A Gas Grill Inside Outside Grates And All Parts

In this guide, we take you through cleaning your gas grill inside and out in a few easy-to-follow steps. We cover the cleaning of all parts, surfaces, grates and all, to keep your grill looking immaculate and performing optimally while adding potentially years to its life.

In this article, we provide step-by-step instructions on how to clean a gas grill.

Because a clean gas grill is a safe grill, a good-looking grill, and guess what? It produces better food than a dirty grill too!

You will hear many people say when you ask about their dirty grill: Oh, thats all flavor that is!

Its not, it is old grease and grime. And when it burns after turning on the grill, the smoke produced is acrid and bitter, and it does taint the taste of the food.

While cleaning might be the last thing on your mind after an indulgent meat feast, its a skill and practice that every grill master should conquer.

That desired charred finish on your food leaves carbon deposits on all of your grills surface areas, even the ones that you cannot see.

Grime, dirt, and bacteria will stick to these deposits and gradually accumulate.

Over time this will result in uneven heating and uneven grilling, which can ruin your grilling experience altogether. And if left for too long, it can ruin a grill completely!

How To Clean And Maintain A Bbq

Proper cleaning and maintenance is the secret ingredient to great grilling. A clean BBQ grill will provide higher temperatures and better heat distribution, and you won’t have as much trouble with food sticking to the grates either. All in all, good maintenance means better performance.

Some simple steps at the beginning, end, and throughout the season will keep your grill in top shape.

Grease Food And Moisture Can Take A Toll

Keeping stainless steel kitchen appliances smudge-free and shiny is hard enough. Keeping a stainless steel gas grill pristine requires even more time and attention. Its outdoors, exposed to the elements sometimes year-round. That exposure is just one reason stainless steel becomes tarnished. Grease, food particles, and moisture all take their toll on stainless, says Cindy Fisher, who oversees grill testing at Consumer Reports.

If youre going to do just one thing for your stainless grill, keep it clean, says Kevin Kolman, a spokesman for Weber, which makes grills with both stainless and porcelain-enameled lids. In addition to helping the stainless hold its shine, regular cleaning helps preserve its resistance to corrosion.

The more you use your grill and the harsher the environmental conditions, the more youll need to clean it. Salt air speeds up corrosion and rust, so regular maintenanceat least weeklyis especially important if you live near the ocean. Chlorine from a nearby swimming pool can also damage a grills finish if its not cleaned regularly.

Stainless steel varies in quality, and manufacturers may use different grades for different parts of the grill. That explains why maintenance advice may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer and grill to grill. Be sure to check your manual or the manufacturers website for how to handle discoloration, tough stains, and rust on your grill.

The Importance Of A Clean Grill

If youd rather look at the mess on your grill and shrug it off than give it the cleaning it needs, consider the benefits of a clean grill. Here are some of the advantages.

1. Your food will taste better: No more charred bits of grilled foods past with a clean grill. A bit of charring on your food is great, but when it comes from last weeks dinner, its not bringing good flavor.

2. Its safer to use a clean grill: Grease buildup can become hazardous, especially when exposed to the flame of a grill. Grills with residue can experience flare-ups, which put you in danger. We love flame-grilled flavor as much as the next outdoor chef, but this isnt the way to get it.

3. Its better for you: When buildup from your grill gets on your food, you risk putting dangerous substances in your body. Most of the accumulation is from food, but some of it can come from your heat source. Bacteria could also accumulate if you dont maintain a clean grill. Save yourself the risk of consuming dangerous residue and clean your grill frequently.

4. Your grill will last longer: Clean every component of your grill to avoid damage. Buildup can damage parts of your grill or stop them from working. If you let enough grease accumulate, you may have to replace grill parts or get a new grill. Treat your grill as you would indoor appliances to avoid making replacements.

Clean Grates And Racks After Each Use

Cleaning Your Outdoor Barbecue Gas Grill

Cleaning chores are much easier if they are done often, after each use of the grill. This is critical with gas grills since the high temperatures can bake on grease and foods, making it challenging to clean the grates and racks once they cool and the grease hardens.

Make sure to clean these parts after every cooking session.

Scrape And Brush Burner Tubes And Lower Cookbox

  • Use a stainless steel wire brush to remove all debris from the burner tubes. Be sure to brush the tubes from side to side only, because front-to-back brushing could clog their holes and prevent the proper gas flow next time you light the grill.
  • With the burner tubes clean, use a shop vacuum or hand broom to remove any loose debris from the bottom of the cook box. Use a putty knife to scrape all remaining debris into your grill’s grease tray.
  • Use a headlamp or flashlight to make sure you’re not missing anything. If your grill has accessories in the lower cookbox, such as flavorizer bars, scrape and brush those clean, too.

How I Cleaned My Pellet Grill

To take care of my own grungeyTraeger, I dragged my Shop-Vac out of my garage and got to work.

Removing the grill grates, drip tray, and fire box cover was really easy I just reversed the process I used to assemble the grill. No tools required.

Inside, I found piles of ash, and the fire box overflowing with it. In the past, allowing my grill to get this dirty has caused it to choke out while attempting to raise temperature.

I noticed a lot of baked-on grease and meat residue on my drip tray. Letting it accumulate like this is both unhealthy and dangerous. Ive had some really big grease fires over the years because Ive neglected cleaning it.

I also found that my grease trap was overflowing with nasty, black grease. I think the last time I emptied it was about a year ago. This must be why my dogs have been licking my grill so much recently. I spilled it all over myself, then had to go change clothes. Emptying the trap more regularly will make clean up a lot simpler in the future.

Because my drip tray and grates were so filthy, I decided to pressure wash them to give the grill a fresh start.

While everything was drying, I used a non-toxic home cleaner to soak all the exterior and interior surfaces on the grill, then scrubbed them with a microfiber cloth. Before reinstalling the drip tray, I wrapped it in aluminum foil to make clean up easier in the futurehopefully encouraging me to do it more often.
