How To Clean Cast Iron Grill Grates Weber

Grilling your food is a good option nowadays as it is reliable as well as regarding health issues as it requires a minimum of oil for cooking. Moreover, it is very convenient and portable and could be carried, be it any picnic or family gatherings.

Lots of grilling products are available in the market manufactured by different companies but Weber grills stand out in this crowd. Weber grills are a well-known company that makes various products made of cast iron grills.

Grilling grates are interlacing structures fitted on a grill. The majority of the grill grates are made up of cast iron as iron is highly durable and it can withstand much higher temperatures.

Steel grills are also used for this purpose but they are unable to withstand heat at such high temperatures as required for grilling. For this purpose, cast iron grills are best. But with any kind of grill, regular cleaning and proper maintenance are mandatory, so as to prevent them from rusting and keeping it functional for a longer duration of time.

When exposed to water, cast iron is prone to rust. Iron when comes in contact with water in the presence of air containing oxygen, a brownish substance called rust is deposited on the surface of the iron. Barely kept grills catch rust easily due to humidity in the air.

Grilling over rusted grill grates can impose serious health complications, mainly affecting a persons gastrointestinal tract. So it is very important to keep your grills rust free.

How To Store Your Grill

Grill cover, grill cover, grill cover. It may be obvious, but covering your grill is a must if you’re keeping it outdoors. When I first moved into an apartment with a proper grilling space, I immediately ran to the closest Target and picked up one of those knee-high 12-inch square grills and passed on a cover. Fast forward two months: the thing was a rusty mess and beyond use. Sadly, I let that grill die an early death by keeping it exposed to the elements.

Back at the store, I opted for a 22-inch Weber kettle knock-off, this time purchasing a cover at the same time. I’m proud to say that cheap-o grill is still going strong after six years now enjoying a good life of churning out great food at my cousin’s place, thanks in large part to keeping it covered when it was not in use.

Looking back through these tips, it all seems so minimal. The daily maintenance endured is so minor compared to all the greatness that comes from the fruits of this labor. So take that little bit of time to keep your grill happy, then throw some food over the flames, sit back and reap the rewards for years to come.

The end-of-the-day, just-ate-a-ton-of-meat laziness is kicking in, and with it, the total desire to ignore a problem at hand: the remains of spent fuel.

I implore you, overcome your meat coma and clean out that ash. See, a pile of ash left in the grill can collect moisture, and ash plus moisture can equal a cement-like substance that can become your biggest challenge to cleaning your grillif you can manage to clean it out at all.

To make quick work of this, I keep a big bucket by the grill where I can dump ash at days end. Not only am I more likely to complete this annoying chore if it’s that much easier, but I can also safely move still warm coals out of the grill to finish extinguishing. I store that bucket somewhere where it won’t get wet, then trash the collection of ash when it’s full and I’m positive there’s no coals still burning.

Ash disposal becomes even easier if you opt for lump charcoal, since it creates relatively little ash when compared to briquettes.

Removing Rust With Common Household Items

Vinegar and Baking Soda: Baking soda can work wonders on rust. When mixed with vinegar, it forms a potent paste. Rub the paste on rust spots and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

Lemon Juice: You can make another rust-busting paste with lemon juice and powder detergent. It needs a little more time than vinegar and baking soda. Let it work its magic overnight.

Safe Rust Removers: If youve tried the first two methods but still have rust, you may need to step up to a commercial rust remover. Do not use a generic rust remover. They can leave chemical residue behind that could be toxic to food. Whenever youre dealing with rust on a cooking surface, always use products designed for that purpose.

Soap and Water: Mix some dish soap and warm water in a bucket. Wash the grill with something soft. For stubborn rust on grill grates, try using a nylon brush to remove the rust particles. Avoid anything abrasive.

  • Using a brush or sponge, cover the grill grates with the baking soda paste and let sit for a few minutes.
  • Tear off a sizable piece of aluminum foil and crumple into a ball.
  • Scrub the baking-soda covered grate wires with the aluminum foil ball, working up and down each wire and across the grate.
  • Rinse the grate with water and return to the grill.

The Obvious Approach: Brushing

How to Clean A Charcoal Grill – Ace Hardware

This method works best if it is done immediately after grilling while the grate is still hot. Before the grates cool off, scrape each grate with a brush, both top and bottom sides. You can also dip the brush in water which will create a steam that loosens the grease. Not only will this make cleaning time shorter, but it will discourage insects from hanging around your grill. Depending on your grate you may need to wipe them down with a cloth after scrapping.

When The Grill Is Cool

If your grill wasn’t in horrible shape when you took the cover off this season, you could skip the previous steps and start here.

  • Remove the cooking grate. If your grill has a charcoal grate in addition to a cooking grate, remove it as well. Brush any big chunks of charcoal, ash, or other debris from the grates. If necessary, soak the grates in soapy water for a couple of hours.
  • Wash the inside of the lid and bowl with soapy water and a scrubber brush or steel wool soap pad. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Clean the cooking grate with a scraper, and then a grill brush . Apply vegetable or olive oil to the cooking grate with a rag or folded-up paper towel. You can also use beef or bacon fat. Oiling the grate helps keep food from sticking and it also prevents rust.
  • Cooking spray will also work. Note: Never spray cooking spray on the grate while the fire or coals are burning.

Cleaning Weber Grill For The First Time

Cleaning a Weber Grill for the first time is critical. You just cant start using a grill without washing it. Therefore, you have to make sure to wash the grate using soapy water or detergent. Make sure that the detergent is not too harsh on the grates, otherwise it will damage the grates and make them useless.

If you want to make the cleaning in the future a lot easier then allow the grate to burn off at a very high temperature for at least 10 to 15 minutes. These few steps are handy because they will ensure that your grill stays in its proper condition for a long time to come.

Add some lemon juice to break down acids faster while you give a scrub down between grilled dishes. It can even reach into narrow slots that other tools may find hard getting into. Its a safer alternative to wire brushes but still uses looped wire to clean-off cooked food particles.

When Is The Time To Buy New Grates

No matter how it can happen, grates will eventually wear out if you dont take care of them. The issues of rust, wear-n-tear, and rough cleaning can end them sooner for all the wrong reasons. When you see that the grates are getting too pitted from scraping too hard will be a sign. Rusted to the point they are nearly falling off is another! Perhaps you forgot that the weather damaged them through water and rusting.

When you see these signs, its time to get a new grill surface that fits onto your grill. Since this is your cooking table, you better buy a quality metal. If you take good care of that grill, it will last longer without needing a replacement for many decades.

Routine Maintenance For Gas Grills

Use warm soapy water and a sponge or dishcloth to remove smoke and grease buildup from the lid and side burner cover of the grill. Smoke and grease buildup resembles flaking paint, however for safety Weber grills are not painted on the inside.

Remove the bottom tray and drip pan from the grill and clean using warm soapy water. If needed, these parts can be soaked in a soapy water solution to help remove heavy debris.

Clean the Flavorizer bars with a brass wire grill brush. If needed, remove the Flavorizer bars from the grill and clean using warm soapy. Rinse soap residue from Flavorizer bars with water before placing back in the grill.

Why We Dont Like Brushes For Cleaning Grates

Everybody thinks that wire brushes work best, but in reality, they can be dangerous if not used properly. You need to use a scraper to knock down the dried-up stuff that a wire brush cant do easily. Like brushing your teeth huh? Not really, since little wire hairs can snap off and stick to the greasy spots you cant get to. You wont see it there until it gets in your food. Sending your BBQ guests to the hospital is never part of the plan.

Only use a wire brush after youve scraped off all the grease and given the grill a good inspection. Dip your wire brush into water before doing any scrubbing after the grill is free from oil and junk. If the grill is still hot, the water will vaporize and causes steam to remove anything left-over. This will also prevent little wires from sticking to the grill surface too as theyll drop down into the grill bed.

The Lazy Approach: Burning

How to use the One-Touch Cleaning System on a Summit Charcoal Grill

The idea behind this method is simple, get the grate super hot until all the caked on grease burns up. You can throw the grates in a self-cleaning oven or simply place some aluminum foil down on top of the grate, close the lid and light up the grill. After about 10-15 minutes all of the grease should be a white powder, simply brush it off and youre done.

Cast Iron Grill Grates

If you ask me, these grates can be perfect for getting non-stick grilling if you are very careful. Heres why this happens and why so many people think cast iron is some magical metal. The surface has a very nice quality of holding cooking oil. Its iron, so the little imperfections in the metal will allow the oil to remain on the surface evenly. But when you add heat, this changes everything. That oil can burn-off and then you get fat and food sticking to the grate.

Youll have to clean these more often when the heat is getting too hot. Even though they hold up great for higher heat, they will need scrubbing and oiling after every use. They can be a headache over the other alternatives. If you want to keep it simple, dont invest in cast iron grates unless you are prepared to do more prepping to keep these grates well oiled and properly cleaned.

No Scrub Baking Soda And Vinegar Grate Cleaning

If you have an extremely dirty grill with stubborn, caked-on grease or grime that doesnt loosen right away soaking the grimy grates overnight in baking soda and white vinegar can save the labor of scrubbing.

Try this method to deep clean your grates at the beginning of grilling season or use it after a cookout, especially if you cant scrub the grates right away.

  • Once your grates are completely cool, remove from the grill.
  • In a large garbage bag , combine 2 cups of white vinegar and one cup of ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda. The mixture will begin foaming right away.
  • Place all the grates into the trash bag and seal it with a tight rubber band or knotted string. Place the bag with the grates and the solution in a cool, out-of-the-way place and wait 8-12 hours or overnight.
  • Remove the grates from the bag and rinse in a large sink or with a hose. Most, if not all of the grime should fall away from the grates. Rub any stubborn residue away with a ball of aluminum foil or sponge it will be much easier and looser than before soaking.
  • Seal the garbage bag and discard it and any remaining solution.
  • Return your grates to your grill.

Deep Cleaning And Maintenance

After youve cooked the last burger of the season, thoroughly clean your grill before storing it for the winter. Remove the grates, burner hoods, and grease pan, and scrub them with hot, soapy water and a plastic scour pad. Do the same inside the firebox and lid. Thoroughly rinse and dry all parts before reassembling. Also, remove the battery from the igniter before storing your grill long-term so it doesnt corrode.

Even if you follow the strictest cleaning and maintenance schedule, you will have to replace some parts on your grill as it ages. The burner hoods and cooking grates in particular take a lot of abuse and arent meant to last forever. My dad replaced these parts on his 17-year-old Weber Genesis four to five times over the years.
