Types Of Outdoor Pizza Ovens
There are a few different types of outdoor ovens, well take a closer look at each kind, so you can figure out the right fit for you. There are two main categories of outdoor ovens is:
A stationary oven is large and basically immovable. It is usually built into the backyard the designs and style vary as widely as the prices. You can hire a professional or try your hand at building one yourself. These are usually too expensive for the average Joe, but if youve recently won the lottery, then enjoy your new pizza oven. Nonetheless, we have collaborated some of the best high-end pizza ovens that wont require a second mortgage.
Portable outdoor ovens are the most compact and affordable. In fact, all of our Value Ovens Under $500 are all classified as portable. Typically, these types of outdoor ovens are made of metal instead of brick and are fueled with either wood pellets or propane gas. Building the ovens out of metal instead of brick offer obvious advantages.
First, brick ovens are massive, while metal ovens are smaller and lighter. Their small, compact frames make them more mobile and convenient for storage. Metal ovens can also incorporate a variety of features such as convection motors or rotating cooking surfaces.
Understanding Creative Manufacture Verbiage
Portable oven manufactures are known for advertising insane high temperature and short cook times. They explain their products something like this:
Can I Leave My Pizza Oven Outside
Leaving a pizza oven outside indefinitely depends on the type of oven you invest in. If you choose a sturdy brick oven or stone-encased model, leaving it outside through all four seasons should be fine so long as youre prepared to clean it before use. For other styles, like portable outdoor pizza ovens and rolling-cart models, youll want to use a cover and protect it from the elements. These more fragile designs should be treated similarly to your favorite grill or BBQ setup.
Put In The Steel Shelf
If you dont have experience welding and cutting metal, you might want to have a machine shop make the metal pieces for you. Otherwise, youll need a welder and a cutting torch for this step.
At this point, you can put the steel shelf in place. It measures 14¾ inches by 18 inches by 1½ inches and is made of quarter-inch steel. The most important measurement is the inside width, which for our shelf was 14¼ inches. This allows firebricks to fit perfectly without being cut. The steel parts are joined with six spot welds: three per side, on the bottom so they dont interfere with placing the firebrick. With a cutting torch, cut a 6-inch diameter hole in the center for the stovepipe. With the steel shelf in place, flush with each side, set the remaining firebricks in place to form the chimney base.

Right Location For Building An Oven
Choose the location of your DIY oven keeping the size of your garden, making sure that the brick oven fits inside your lawn. Make sure there is nothing as same as the location of where you plan to build your brick oven that catches fire or is burnable. Build the brick oven away from your own and your next-door window to prevent the smoke-producing during cooking, smoking, or grilling to go to your own or your next-door house. Build the brick oven under the shade because it will make your grilling experience more fun on hot summer days.
Brick oven is also known as the stone oven or masonry oven. For building a brick oven, you need bricks that can withstand high temperatures. If the bricks of your oven cannot undergo a high temperature and you continue to cook, it will soon crack and all the hard work you went through during its production.
Choose The Shape Of Your Choice
Usually, a brick oven exists in two shapes only. The dome-shaped brick oven and the barrel-shaped brick oven. The dome-shaped brick ovens increase the beauty of your garden due to their appealing shape. High temperature to heat a dome-shaped brick oven is required and takes longer to heat up properly than the barrel-shaped brick oven, which cooks the food evenly. Requires more of your hard work, time and you need to add some woodwork as well during its building procedure.

Considerations Before Building Prep
An important thing to consider before starting any of your DIY projects would be the local law and whether the area you live in has any restrictions as it pertains to building a brick barbecue, e.g. requirements for planning permission, local building codes or a need for a building permit.
Pro tip: You may need to lay a concrete foundation depending on your location, hence it is useful to consider if the condition of the ground will support the weight of your construction.
There may be sinkholes or uneven ground you will need to fix. Make sure the ground is level before starting and use only material that will support your oven. Brick barbecue pits are heavy and require strong, firm foundations.
Suggested support material can consist of brick, concrete paver blocks or anything similar that will properly support your oven. Your location should be a permanent spot for your brick BBQ pit, so choose accordingly and carefully.
It is a good idea to place your cooking space as close to a dining or entertainment area as possible for easy accessibility. When picking a spot for your brick barbecue, allow clearance all around and between it and any combustible material such as wooden fences, to ensure safety is preserved.
Next, determine your desired design. There are many different shapes, materials and sizes to consider when thinking about your build. When creating your BBQ you can design something that is pleasing to the eye and accentuates your property or outdoor living space.

Concrete Block Upper Half
To form the outside of the oven, set the remaining two courses of concrete blocks , being careful not to bump the firebricks. Around the firebox opening , leave an eighth-inch space to allow for expansion and contraction. We stacked CEBs temporarily inside the firebox to keep them in place. Bricks would work just as well. Let the block dry for two to three days.
Youll need a right angle grinder or wet saw to cut a few concrete blocks around the front of the firebox. Both tools will do the job, but my preference is a right angle grinder because of its low cost, ease of use and versatility. We used it to cut CEBs for the wall behind our kitchen, steel reinforcement, tile and concrete blocks. We even used it to grind and sand our wood poles for the cover and to grind the edges of our concrete countertops and griddle. It paid for itself on this one job.
