5 Best Built In Grills For Outdoor Kitchens 2021

Weber is one of the most respected names in the world of girls and the Weber 45010001 Spirit II E-310 3-Burner Liquid Propane Grill is one of their all-time best sellers. In short, this is a great grill. With 529 square inches of cooking space with the addition of a warming rack, this grill is not huge but is large enough for hosting some serious back-yard parties.

One thing we loved about this grill is the fact that you can control the three gas burners separately. This means you can use only as much space as you need, which is perfect for outdoor kitchens . Moreover, you can also use this feature to cook different foods that require different temperatures at the same time.

Other than that, this grill also includes a stylish lid that you can put down for slow roasts, or lift all the way up when you dont need it. There is also a warming tray. This grill comes with its own cart, which is quite well designed overall.

There is a foldable side table and hooks to hang your tools. The cart also has wheels on two of the legs, so its not hard to move this grill around your yard, even though its quite heavy.

Is It True That Propane Burns Hotter Than Natural Gas

Yes, it is true. As we mentioned earlier, one cubic foot of propane produces 2,516 BTUs when burned, while natural gas produces just 1,030 BTUs when the same amount is consumed.

This discrepancy has led to some pitmasters claiming that natural gas grills just dont get hot enough to properly sear. While this might have been true for earlier models, modern natural gas grills have overcome this issue by increasing the amount of gas released by their burners, thereby increasing the temperature.

A lot of high-end models, and most of the grills weve reviewed here today, also include an infrared high-temperature searing station. These searing stations present a more convenient solution to getting the perfect reverse sear than heating your entire grill up to a high temperature.

A To Z List Of Pellet Grill/smoker Brands

Back in 2007 when I first become aware of pellet grills and smokers the only brand I was really aware of was Traeger. Traeger is really where this whole concept of cooking with pellets started in the 1980s. It was a slow burner but since the 2010s is really when pellet grills and smokers started to get mainstream awareness, discussed alongside gas and charcoal grills. There are now over 30 pellet grill/smoker brands that Im aware of, and the link above goes to my A to Z list of brands article.

Now, you may already be aware of a few of the other brands such as Pit Boss, Camp Chef, Z Grills and Im sure you are aware of Weber, though you may not have known they have entered the pellet grill game. However, they are now many, many more brands to look into. Some may be what are commonly referred to as Traeger clones, but many others are offering their own unique designs and features.

Another Good Gas Grill

Weber is no longer producing our former upgrade pick, the Weber Genesis II E-310. But this model is still available for purchase at big-box stores like Home Depot and Lowes. We still think its a great grill with clever design features. For one thing, this grill has an externally mounted propane tank, which is easier to install and replace than traditional, under-grill tanks . And this type of tank also frees up the area under the grill for storage of tools and other items. With the Genesis II E-310, we didnt notice a significant upgrade in performance over that of the Spirit II E-310. In fact, the Genesis II E-310 didnt sear our burgers as darkly as the Spirit II E-310 did. Thats okay, thoughthis grill is an exceptional performer, period.

Burners And Heating Power

The Best Stainless Steel Modular Outdoor Kitchen | Grilla Grills Gear Breakdowns with Mark Graham

The burners of a built-in gas grill should be made of high-quality stainless steel. You dont want them to start cracking after a couple of years of use. The burners should also provide even heat across the grilling surface.

Having at least 3 individually controlled burners, preferably more, is required to create heat zones for indirect cooking. This is necessary when slow cooking large items like ribs and briskets.

Youll also need the grill to be able to heat up to 600 degrees plus with ease for proper searing.

BTUs and Heat Flux

The grilling power of gas grills is often measured in BTUs . One BTU is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. While its important to have enough BTUs, this variable alone doesnt tell us much because.

Heat flux is a much better variable for telling if the grill actually has enough heating power because it also factors in the size of the grilling surface. A small grill doesnt require as many BTUs to get hot as a large one. The heat flux is calculated by dividing the BTUs of the grills main burners by the size of the main grilling area.

All models in this guide produce enough heat for the grill to get hot enough for searing in less than 10 minutes.

How To Choose The Best Built

Buying a built-in gas grill is going to be quite a hefty investment, so you should plan carefully before getting one. It will be a permanent part of your outdoor kitchen and you will probably be using it for decades to come.

This step-by-step buyers guide will help you with choosing the right built-in gas grill for your outdoor kitchen:

Warranty And Customer Service

Having a long warranty on the main parts of your built-in grill is important. The grill housing and burners are parts that you dont want to change they should be built to last and have at least a 10-year warranty.

Some other parts, like flame tamers and gas valves, dont need to have such a long warranty. They can be easily replaced if necessary.

Its also very important to have responsive and helpful customer service in case you have some issues. A long warranty is not very useful if getting the replacement unit or parts takes months. Sometimes you might also need advice with installing and assembling or using the grill.

Royal Gourmet Bbq Charcoal Grill And Offset Smoker

Gas grills are powerful and efficient, but for many people, a grill is not a grill unless it runs on charcoal. This is because its hard to achieve that unique, smokey taste without actual smoke. If this is a description of you, you might want to choose the Royal Gourmet BBQ Charcoal Grill and Offset Smoker for your outdoor kitchen.

The Royal Gourmet BBQ Charcoal Grill and Offset Smoker is a fairly large cart-mounted grill. In total, this grill offers 800 square inches of cooking space. In reality, what this means is that the main grilling area gives you 438 square inches of space to work with.

However, you get an additional 183 square inches in the offset smoker area. The smoker box can also be used as a smaller grill. If You Can Afford It Go For A Stainless Steel Pellet Grill

Top 50 Best Built In Grill Ideas

So if we look at the two pellet grill examples above of the REC TEC and Grilla Grill. Both of those pellet grill brands do use quite a bit of stainless steel. The Grilla Grill has stainless steel internals, and so does the REC TEC, but it also has a stainless steel cooking chamber unlike the Grilla Grill .

However, if your budget can stretch up over $2,000 you can start to consider a full stainless steel pellet grill. Which it should be pretty obvious is going to be better suited to an outdoor kitchen setup, especially if you live in a climate where above average rain/high humidity is a factor.

One of the most common built-in full stainless steel pellet grills fitted in outdoor kitchens is manufactured by Memphis: Image BBQGuys.com

There are a couple of full stainless steel pellet grills available for just under $2,000. However, none of those models are available as built-in units suitable for an outdoor kitchen setup and their lower cabinets dont look easily removable for a DIY make it fit option.

The only exception to this is probably the Louisiana Grill Estate Series 860. However, its hard to recommend this pellet grill for a couple of reasons. First, it doesnt appear to have a PID controller, which for a pellet grill close to $2,000 isnt great. Second, its got some very average reviews as you can see through the link below.

Best Budget Natural Gas Grill Weber Spirit E

Natural gas grills are far from wallet-friendly, but the Weber Spirit E-310 manages to combine a decent range of features with good build quality to make it our pick for best budget natural gas grill.

The E-310 is the smallest of the grills on our list, with a total cooking area of 529 square inches, which combines 424 square inches of primary cooking area with a 105 square inch warming rack.

Three stainless steel burners provide 32,000 BTUs of heat, which, combined with the cooking space, is perfect for hosting a standard BBQ or everyday family grilling, but is probably going to be a little small for a grand cookout.

The cast-iron cooking grates are porcelain-enameled for corrosion resistance and to make them non-stick. The lid and cook box are also porcelain-enameled to make them equally corrosion resistant.

The E-310 doesnt have a vast amount of features, but it does have two side tables, six tool hooks, a below grill cabinet, and an easy-to-clean grease management system.

What we like:

  • The total cooking area of 529 square inches and 32,000 BTUs of heat is more than enough to handle standard family cooking.
  • The cook box, grill plates, and lid are all porcelain-enameled.
  • The E-310 has a grease management system for easier cleanup.

What we dont like:

  • The E-310 is a little on the small side if you are looking to cater for significant events regularly.
  • Not all of the E-310 is made of stainless steel, some of it is just painted steel.
