How To Clean Cast Iron Grill Skillet

Before You Cook Make Sure Your Cast Iron Has Been Seasoned To Prevent Burnt On Crud

How to Clean a Cast Iron Skillet or Cast Iron Stovetop Grill~Easy Cooking

Seasoning cast iron is a pretty easy process that is designed to build up a layer of polymerized fat on the surface of your cast iron. This layer is very non stick. Not as non stick as Teflon but it is pretty darn good at allowing you to cook most types of food without needing to worry about food sticking. Many cast iron manufacturers now season their cast iron before they sell it so when you receive it you can immediately start cooking and dont need to worry about seasoning it yourself. If the manufacturer of your cast iron doesnt specifically state that its been pre-seasoned then youll want to do that before you cook.

The Proper Procedure For Drying A Cast Iron Pan

Since cast iron is highly susceptible to rust, its important to remember the following:

  • Never let the pan drip dry.
  • Never leave water sitting in the pan.
  • Never store the pan with a lid sitting on top.

All of these actions can cause moisture to seep into the cast iron and can cause rusting. The best way to dry your cast iron is to ensure that all water is evaporated before storing it.

Once your pan is clean, place it on top of your stove or in your oven and turn up the heat. On average, the drying process can take up to an hour before all of the water is evaporated. Remove your pan from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes before seasoning.

Tips To Keep Your Cast Iron Grill Clean Longer

Now that your grill is freshly cleaned, take a little time after every use to wipe down surfaces while the grill is still slightly warm using hot, soapy water. Grease and food will come right off. Finish by wiping down with a sponge dipped in plain hot water to rinse away any sudsy residue. Re-season as needed if food begins to stick to the grill.

If you have a new cast iron grill, you will need to season it. That first seasoning ensures that food will not stick, cooking will be more even, and the oiling will help prevent rusting. Wash the components in hot, soapy water. Rinse and dry the grill. Then take these quick steps to season your new cast iron grill:

  • Dry the grill completely and apply a thin, even coating of cooking oil or melted solid vegetable shortening with a paper towel.
  • Cover all cooking surfaces with oil, but don’t use too much or it will be sticky.
  • Heat the grill to around 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about one hour. The grates should no longer have a shine once they are seasoned.
  • Allow the grill to cool before using.

Wipe Away Food Particles

While the griddle is still warm, use a paper towel to wipe away food particles, grease, or drippings from the surface. If there is stuck-on food, use a plastic scraper to loosen the food before wiping it away. Never use a metal scraper or steel wool that could damage the surface.

Reseasoning Your Cast Iron Skillet After Cleaning

Now, you have the option of rinsing the cast iron skillet out with water or just wipe it clean with a paper towel. The choice is yours. If you do decide to rinse the skillet out with water, you will need to make sure that you thoroughly dry it.

Just a few drops of water can cause a cast iron skillet to rust. You may want to consider adding a few drops of oil and rubbing the oil in using a paper towel.

Once you have done so, you will then need to put the pan into the oven until the oil begins to smoke. When the oil begins to smoke, it is time to take the pan out of the oven. This process will reseason the pan.

How To Season Cast Iron Cookware

The best way to season cast iron cookware is to apply a thin layer of flaxseed oil or similar edible high smoke point oil to the cooking surface. Wipe it clean with a paper towel. Dont worry, you wont be able to remove all of the oil. Place it in the oven on its highest setting, usually 500 degrees. Its best to place the cast iron in prior to the oven preheating so the cast iron can more slowly increase in temperature. Once the oil has burned off remove the skillet from the oven and allow to cool. Youll want to repeat this process a few times to build up a properly thick seasoning layer. After some use you may find the seasoning layer is beginning to fade and you will want to repeat this process a time or two to build the layer back up.

Cleaning A Cast Iron Grill Pan With Soap And Water:

However, harsh soaps can affect the seasoning of your pan, so use this method sparingly and make sure you use a very mild detergent.

    Instructions:

  • Start by adding a tiny amount of mild dish detergent in the middle of your grill pan.
  • Then add a bit of hot water to the pan to make a lather.
  • Use a soft scrubber or sponge to gently scrub the surface and sides of the cast iron pan.
  • Once all the gunk has been cleaned off and the surface of the pan is smooth, rinse off thoroughly, making sure no soap remains in the pan.
  • Dry completely with a dish towel or any other soft cloth.

Sugar and hot cast iron dont always mix well. When using grill pans, wipe or brush off any sweet or sticky marinades from your food before you add it to the pan. On a regular grill, its normal to finish foods with a brush of sauce, but in a grill pan, it can be very tricky to avoid burning and sticking. Directions

    1. Set your cast iron skillet in the sink and sprinkle a teaspoon or two of Kosher salt in the bottom.

    2. Slice off the top of a raw potato. Make sure to leave enough of the potato so you can grab it easily. Use the cut end of your potato to scour the skillet, grinding the salt into any rusty or crusty spots. As you work, rinse off the skillet and add more salt if it requires more scrubbing.

    3. Once all of the rust has vanished , dry your skillet with a clean towel.

    4. If you dont need to re-season your skillet, just add a few drops of oil to its surface. You can be a tad heavy handed with the oil, as it will mostly just absorb. Rub the oil into your skillets surface, that way its ready to go for you next cooking adventure.

How To Maintain Your Cast Iron Grill Skillet

There are five ways to maintain your cast iron grill skillet and I have mentioned all of them down below:

    • Cast iron skillets should not be washed in the dishwasher because they are not dishwasher safe. Although certain non-stick pans would just lose their defensive seasoning during this type of cleaning, a grill skillet would almost certainly corrode;within a few cycles.
    • Fortunately, cast iron grill pans can withstand high temperatures, allowing you to cook your food over an open fire.
    • If your skillet;has a non-stick coating, avoid using metal utensils when cooking to avoid damaging it. Plastic, on the other hand, would not scrape;your skillet.
    • To avoid any surface harm, never wash your skillet with steel wool. Instead, clean it with silicone scrubbers.
    • To avoid trapping moisture from the air within your skillet, never store it with the lid on. Rust would most likely surface on your cookware as a result.
    • Preparing acidic foods in a cast iron grill skillet;is strongly discouraged, particularly before seasoning. You should wait for a seasoning to develop. As a result, you can season a new cast iron skillet;before using it. And tomatoes wont be able to ruin the defensive layer after that.
    • After frying, never leave the water in your cast iron grill skillet. Unlike most cookware that can be washed after drying, this skillet would most likely rust rather than clean.
