Season Cast Iron Grill Grates

How To Season New Cast Iron Grill Grates

How to Season Cast Iron Grill Grates

Whether youre using your grill for the first time or replacement cooking grates, here are a few simple steps to season your grill.

  • Remove the grates from the packaging, and make sure you get rid of any packing packaging material including tape.
  • Wash the grates with warm water and mild dish soap to remove any stubborn dust or debris from the packaging.
  • Install the grates, and ignite your grill to dry the cast iron grates. Heating the grill grates opens the pores, which allows the oil to easily penetrate, and create a non-stick surface.
  • Turn off the grill, and let it cool to the tough, after which you can coat the grates with cooking oil with a basting brush.
  • Fire up your grill once again to 200-400 degrees for 30 minutes. The coated surface of the grates after 30 minutes should have a shiny finish, and appear slightly darker than before. Turn of the grill and let it cool off completely.

We recommend using a HIGH SMOKE POINT OIL like one of these organic cold pressed cooking oils.

    Avocado Oil smoke point

    Rice Bran Oil smoke point

    Canola Oil smoke point

Do not use salted fat such as margarine or butter. Non-stick cooking sprays are less effective as they burn off at low heat.

Now that you have applied oil to your new cast iron grids, light the grill and operate on Med/Low for 30 minutes. The oil bakes on and creates a non-stick protective layer. Turn the control knobs OFF. After the grids have cooled, they are seasoned and ready to use.

    Seasoning The Grill Using Flame

Another method of seasoning the cast iron grills involves cleaning and drying them in the exact same way. Since this method is suitable for the grills which have developed hardened rust over time and it is super hard to remove. For that, you can shift to acidic or basic solutions. That could be a vinegar solution. This will dissolve the rust, making the pan perfectly clean. Furthermore, you can also opt for the baking soda and water thin solution or either baking soda thick paste depending upon the rust developed.

Once you have cleaned it perfectly using either of these solutions, do not forget to wash it once using a dishwasher and lukewarm water as well. This will prevent these solutions from settling inside the pores, eventually destroying cast-iron appearance and putting an effect on its durability.

Drying is the same as described in the previous method. In this method, however, you have to heat the grills over direct flame. You have to get the grills oiled the same way. You can choose a highly effective oil and put it just enough to cover all the edges. Afterward, you can bring it over medium flame and heat it directly for 10 minutes. Reapply the oil and heat it again once the grills have cooled down after the first heating action. Repeat this step at least 5 times to impart perfect seasoning to the cast iron grills. This method stands out as ineffective. However, it requires more effort than the last method stated.

With proper care, cast iron grill grates can last decades on a gas or charcoal grill. Cast iron grill grates should be cleaned and seasoned after every use to keep them non-stick and resistant to rust. Follow these steps to clean cast iron cooking grates:

  • Never put your cast iron cooking grates in the dishwasher, soak them in soapy water, or allow them to air dry.

However, it is safe to occasionally use mild dish soap or an all-natural cast iron cleaner especially if youre using them for the first time or you need a bit of help lifting difficult debris. However, they require regular cleaning, oiling, and general maintenance so that they can retain their quality.

If a cast iron grate is not properly cleaned and stored with moisture inside, it will rust.

You also need to clean and season your cast iron grates between uses, but the seasoning process is much faster after the initial process of seasoning is complete.

To keep your grates clean, scrub them gently with a Magic Stone or a nylon grill brush, and wipe the grates with paper towels, or a kitchen towel, after they cool to remove loose particles.

To make regular cleaning easy, clean the grates while the grill is still warm. Allow the grill to stay on for 90 minutes to burn away sticky buildup, or close the grill lid and allow it to remain on for several minutes to burn away food particles.

If you use stainless steel grill brushes, wipe the grates off carefully before the next use to remove any bristles that may have fallen off the brush.

Do You Have To Season A New Grill

2016 03 24 Seasoning a cast iron grate for Weber Genesis gas grill

Yes! You should always season a new grill. Oiling and heating the grill will create a protective barrier that prevents rust. Seasoning is also what creates a nonstick surface on your grates so that you dont end up with a frustrating mess of stuck-on food the first time you try out the grill. Plus, the high heat process of seasoning will burn off any dust or other contaminants that are left on the grates during the manufacturing process.

Remember to use this seasoning process every time you use your grill. A well-seasoned grill is the best way to maintain the performance of your grill for many seasons to come. Dont miss out on other great BBQ grilling tips!

Removing The Protective Wax Coating From New Cast Iron Grill Grates

While shopping at Lowes I discovered these cool replacement cast iron grill grates by Char-Broil. They adjust from 14 to 19.5 inches. Which is awesome.

Although it was hard for me to see it, there was a protective wax coating on the new cast iron grill grates. Youll have to remove this wax before seasoning the grates.

I used mild dishwashing soap and hot water to accomplish this task.

Place the cast iron grill grates in your kitchen sink along with 1 tablespoon of soap. Add enough hot water to soak all the grates.

Let them soak for 10-15 minutes then immediately dry them with a towel.

Why do you want the grates as dry as David Letterman? Oil and water dont mix.

Any water left on the grates will ruin the seasoning step, which involves Crisco.

Must I Season My Cast Iron Grill Grates In The First Place

You may have heard the proposal that cast iron grill grates in newer models come ready to use and can do without seasoning. Well, this may be the case but arguably not sustainable either. To be on the safe side confirm with your manufacturer and/or user manual what proper care entails.

Either way, at some point, your grill is bound to start flaking the older it gets. Other times careless handling could cause the porcelain coating to chip off. Unlike stainless steel which is built to be rust-resistant, the former performs average. This suggests that the coating can hardly remain foolproof over time. So if youre really about keeping your grill in the best shape, a couple of bucks for preventive maintenance shouldnt be a big deal.

Yet, even if you skip the seasoning and your grill is a bit rusty, do not worry! Just follow our step-by-step guide on how to clean a rusty grill.
