Hammered By The Pandemic Studio Movie Grill Declares Bankruptcy
Studio Movie Grill, the 33-unit movie theater-restaurant chain, declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Sunday after the pandemic sapped the company of much of its sales.
The Dallas-based company, which just two years ago received a $75 million investment and was one of the fastest growing companies of its kind in the U.S., said the pandemic drained much of its cash reserves. It has just $100,000 in cash, according to court documents.
The filing is compiled in dozens of individual bankruptcy filings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Dallas.
Studio Movie Grill hopes to use the bankruptcy process to renegotiate with its lenders, landlords and movie studios to survive the pandemic.
It remains unknown how long the COVID-19 pandemic will persist and how long the market effects will continue thereafter, William Snyder, chief restructuring officer for Studio Movie Grill , wrote in a court document filed Sunday. SMG anticipates that demand for its services will remain very tenuous until theaters are able to return to full capacity and major motion pictures resume being released for first-run theater showings.
The pandemic has been bad for restaurants and worse for the movie theater industry. The theater chain giant AMC warned that it may not survive the pandemic, while Regal Cinemas recently suspended operations at all of its locations.

Studio Movie Grill Emerges From Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
Studio Movie Grill has exited bankruptcy, it announced Wednesday, after filing for Chapter 11 in October due to effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In its Wednesday announcement, the Dallas-based, dine-in movie theater chain said that as it emerges from bankruptcy, its still operating 17 locations in five states, with plans to open two more in other states in the next six weeks. It operated 34 locations in 10 states prior to the pandemic. The company will also complete construction later this year on a 14-screen location in Georgia.
Additionally, CFO/COO Ted Croft, whos been at the company for a decade, will take over as chief executive, replacing founder and former CEO Brian Schultz. According to the release, Croft has secured funding for the theaters growth since 2011 and will now lead its profitability and sustainability as CEO.

In addition, the chains longtime CFO and COO Ted Croft will become Studio Movie Grills new CEO after navigating the chain through a pandemic in which many of its locations stayed open for food delivery orders. This has been a challenging time for the industry and the brand, Croft said in a statement. Its a testament to SMGs founder, team members, and our other stakeholders, that were standing here today delivering a best-in-class experience to folks getting out of their homes and safely back into theaters.
