The Benefits Of A Charcoal Barbecue
Getting started is always more of an issue with charcoal but dont feel like you need to resort to firelighters or lighter fluid . Invest in an affordable charcoal chimney, which allows you to light them with just a few sheets of newspaper, funneling oxygen up through the coals. Then its simply a case of pouring them onto the grill and you’ll be ready to cook in 20-30 minutes.
Versatility is really the key here with the consistent radiant heat helping you along the way. You can sear really hot and fast , slow-cook large cuts indirectly and place produce directly into the hot coals, though we’d recommend wrapping in foil.
Indirect grilling, which is cooking slowly with the heat source to the side of the produce , is also more viable thanks to the radiant heat. The simplicity and space of the grill will allow you to play with wood smoke, choosing whole pieces of hardwood, or chunks, as well as the more conventional chips.

Should I Buy A Gas Or Charcoal Grill
For casual grillers or beginners, we recommend a gas grill. For pros or barbecue fans, a charcoal grill is better. However, if you’re really serious about grilling, you’ll likely want both.
A gas grill is great for everyday grilling, fast meals, and cookouts. However, a charcoal grill is the gold standard for barbecue since charcoal and wood chips provide a deeper flavor than you get from a gas grill. You’ll also likely run out of propane if you attempt to make a low and slow dish like barbecue brisket or pulled pork on a gas grill.

Shoppingthe Best Charcoal For Grilling
Gas grills dominate the backyard barbecues game not only because they can be portable and easier to operate with the click of a switch, though. More than anything cleanup is a breeze, said Dave Anderson, founder of Famous Daves. Plus, with a charcoal grill, temperatures can fluctuate like this years stock market. You think youve found the right temperature only, within minutes, your coals have died down.
You also dont have to worry about a gust of wind or playing a temperature guessing game when grilling with propane its a constant heat source. And firing up hot, glowing charcoal briquettes to add to the grill is not only dangerous but its a royal pain, added Anderson. Whereas once you light a gas grill, you can cook all day at the temperature you want. Gas grills are just so easy to manage consistent heating.

How Did We Choose These Gas Grills
I chose gas grills from a variety of brands with different feature sets to suit different cooking styles. I picked different price points as well to fit both modest and generous budgets, so even if you don’t have a lot to spend on a new grill, you can still get one that ticks all the boxes. I also made sure to choose gas grills with generous cooking surfaces to accommodate both small foods like veggies, kabobs, and burgers and larger cuts of meat like whole racks of ribs, briskets, and even whole chickens.
The Overall Best Gas Grill: Weber Genesis E
The 2022 Weber Genesis is a big, sexy grill. We tested the E-325s, the most basic version of the new Genesis line, but this grill is far from basic. This year Weber revamped the entire line to include a bigger and more powerful Sear Zone in every model . So while this is billed as a three-burner grill, the sear burner ups that to four. But even without engaging the extra burner, the Genesis produced perfectly cooked meat and gorgeous grill marks every time we used it.
After our initial round of testing, we did a handful of side-by-side cooks to compare the Genesis with our other front-runner, the Napoleon Rogue XT 425 SIB. Each time, both grills perfectly cooked or seared our meat in almost the same time. In the end, the Genesis came out on top for two reasons: Its a sturdier, more substantial grill, and, unlike the Napoleon, gave us no issues in high winds.
So, as I said, this grill isnt exactly basic. But you canupgrade and get additional features, including more burners, a Wi-Fi-enabled dual probe port, and built-in grill lights. The 2022 Genesis line is also compatible with the new Weber Crafted accessories, so you can add a griddle, a wok, a baking stone, and so much more. Every model of the 2022 Genesis is also available as a natural gas grill.
If youre looking for a powerful, durable statement grill that delivers on all frontseven without any spendy accessories or upgradesthe 2022 Weber Genesis E-325s is the best gas grill for you.

Is Cooking Over Propane Safe
In general, grilling your food is considered a healthy way to cook proteins and veggies since it doesn’t use excess fat to impart flavor unlike pan-frying, deep-frying, and sauteing. However, there have been studies done that suggest grilling food can cause the creation of carcinogenic compounds due to charring and prolonged contact with smoke. The good news is that natural gas and propane grills don’t have as high of a risk as their charcoal counterparts, since they cook your food at lower temperatures and don’t produce as much smoke. If you want a more in-depth explanation of what happens to your food when you grill, and the health risks that may be involved, you can check out our informative article over at Healthline.

Lynx L30trf Pro: Best Gas Grill For Big Garden Parties
Reasons to avoid
If youre taking your grilling exploits to the next level, Lynx should certainly be on your list. The Lynx L30TRF Professional is the most premium grill on this list by a long way and, as such, packs in the most high-quality features and performance while also offering a highly generous cooking space at 600 square inches.
Of course, it also demands the highest budget, and will be harder to get hold of than the more affordable best gas grills you may have to reach out to a specialist dealer if you want to get hold of the Lynx L30TRF Professional for your home.
That said, theres a high amount of reassurance that comes with shelling out so much money on a gas grill. This beauty is heated with ceramic burners which are covered to never ever rust. Above them are ceramic briquettes, designed to evenly distribute heat for perfectly even cooking.
The ignition function is super-smart and even the control knobs are LED lit for those balmy evenings when the sun dips but you’re still happily grilling. The infrared rear burner is perfect for searing or rotisserie cooking larger meats, making this the best gas grill for bigger garden gatherings that happen regularly.

Selecting The Right Grill
Its not difficult to select the right grill. The most important thing you can do is think about what you want to cook and how you want to cook it. If all you want to do is grill a few hot dogs and hamburgers at the campsite, theres no sense in getting carried away. Buy an inexpensive grill and use some common sense in preparing that food. If thats where you are now, but you want to, say, move on to grilling seafood or smoking brisket, youre going to need a grill that has the capacity to take you where you want to go. The most important thing for making more sophisticated food on any grillgas, charcoal, or pelletis the ability to control the heat source. For charcoal grills, that means plenty of space for fuel and the means to either add more charcoal, raise and lower the cooking surface, or mound the charcoal up on one side for indirect cooking. For gas grills, you need two or more burners. For pellet grills, its a bit easier, because they have automated temperature control systems.
All of these grills are mobile to one extent or another. However, if mobility is one of your main needs, pay close attention to the portable grills we tested. These are ideal for tailgating and do double duty to expand your firepower in the backyard when your main grill doesnt have enough surface area to cook everything you need when company is expected.

Other Factors We Evaluated
Are the grill parts made of high-quality materials? Does the grill feel like it will last more than a few seasons with heavy use and exposure to the elements?
Is the grill easy to ignite? Does the electronic ignition work? In terms of power, we paid less attention to the listed BTUs and instead looked at whether the grills that claimed high BTUs got hot enough to cook chicken, pork chops, veggies, and more.
How big is the grill? Whats its overall footprint? In addition to the primary grilling area, is there a warming rack? Do the side tables offer enough surface area for platters and supplies?
What features enhance the grilling experience? Does the grill have enclosed storage space below the cooking area? Are there hooks on the exterior for easy access to grilling tools? Can it accommodate a rotisserie?
Are the removable parts actually easy to remove? Does the manual include instructions for proper cleaning?
How Do You Start A Gas Grill
To start cooking on a gas grill, open the valve of the propane tank all the way, and open the lid of the grill. Most modern gas grills have an igniter button, in which case, you’ll simply turn the first burner on high and push the button. For grills without an igniter button, use a long match or lighter wand to light the initial burner. From here, you can turn the other burners to high, then close the lid to let it pre-heat.

We found that the Weber Genesis II EX-335 GBS is as smart as they come when we put it to the test. It has three gas burners, smart cooking, and a great warranty.
Super smart
Weber’s Connect app allows you to get smart when barbecuing. It syncs your phone to your grill and allows you to add details on the type of meat you’re cooking to get the perfect temperature and timing for your food. A probe also monitors the internal temperature.
Great side burner
The Weber Genesis II EX-335 GBS side burner has a lower level which means your flame won’t become extinguished when you’re cooking. That’s good news for unpredictable weather, and we found that it rivals a regular hob in terms of power and ease of use.
Straightforward assembly
Assembly included 72 steps, which is a lot! However, they make sure that every detail is perfectly adhered to so you build a grill that’s built to last. Just make sure you have someone to help and it’ll be done in a few hours. There’s a 10-year warranty, too.
