Pit Boss Sportsman 820sp Vs Z Grills 1000e

Now were going to look at the largest pellet grill/smoker that Z Grills currently offer and compare it against a Pit Boss pellet grill at a similar price point. The Sportsman 820SP is by no means the largest pellet grill Pit Boss produces, thats the Lockhart. However, the Lockhart is more expensive than the Z Grills 1000E, hence why I havent chosen it for this comparison. Both the Pit Boss Sportsman 820SP and Z Grills 1000E retail for just under $700, so lets see how they compare shall we?

So how does the Pit Boss Sportsman 820SP compare against the Z Grills 1000E ?: Images Pitboss-grills.com and ZGrills.com

Pit Boss Vs Traeger Price

Pit Boss Tailgater

Nobody can deny that price is a factor when it comes to making choices on what to buy, so lets start there. Your average charcoal or propane tabletop grill can easily be picked up for around $100, but you need to let go of that idea now if you want a wood pellet grill.

Some of the best grills can go up to $1,000 or more. Youve also got the ongoing cost of buying wood pellets when they run out, but that just replaces the need for buying propane or barbeque coal, so we wont take that into account.

But its an interesting comparison Ive made above. If you look at the temperature and cooking space for the Pit Boss 700FB and Traeger Pro 780, theyre pretty evenly matched the hopper capacity is also pretty similar. In fact, if we forget the Wi-Fi and smart home connectivity, with the Traeger youre paying more than double the price for a grill that is mostly just as capable as the Pit Boss equivalent, while being bigger and heavier.

Heck, even if you want an even bigger grill, the Pit Boss Pro Series 1100, which is another of their best-selling grills according to Pit Boss, youll still only pay around $600. This model has over 1,000 square feet of cooking space, a hopper that can hold 35 lbs of pellets double the Traeger Ive listed above and has a removable side shelf, pellet view window, and priming button, all features lacking on the Traeger.

How Are Pellets Made

You will definitely want to use wood pellets, thats safe to use on food. Preferably youll want to use 100% all hardwood thats dry and looks like sawdust. Wood pellets are known to be very easy to use. They produce less than 1% of ash, so that means if you have 50lbs of pellets, itll only be ¾ cup of ash so cleaning up will be so easy to do. It also helps that they provide that amazing wood flavor onto your food and fill the aroma with air that everyone wants to smell.

Pit Boss Kc Combo Pellet And Gas Cooking On One Grill

Smoked Beef Burgers on Pit Boss Wood Pellet Grill for the First Time

Where the Pit Boss Lockhart purely uses pellets as its source of heat, the KC Combo is a 50/50 split unit, with a pellet grill on one side and a gas grill on the other. I do just want to point out that the pellet grill on the KC Combo can still be used as a smoker, just obviously a small one.

Its not as if you have to opt for the Lockhart if you want smoking capabilities. The idea of a combined pellet and gas grill really started with Camp Chef. On the Camp Chef SmokePro and Woodwind pellet grills, you can attach either their propane Sear box or SideKick. The advantages being in one unit you have the flavour of wood-fired cooking and that additional heat/BTUs of propane when you need it for searing etc.

While not the first pellet/gas combination grill, the Pit Boss KC Combo is one of the most affordable such units: Image Walmart.com

It is interesting to note that another combined pellet/gas grill that is on the market for around the same price as the Pit Boss KC Combo is the Cuisinart Twin Oaks. Cuisinart also has an exclusive deal with Walmart for their pellet grill the Woodcreek.

However, Walmart doesnt sell the combined Twin Oaks pellet/gas grill from Cuisinart for some reason. Anyway, as with the Lockhart above, below is a video from Chef Shaun ONeale talking through the highlights/specs on the Pit Boss KC Combo.

Pit Boss Grills 75275 Stainless Steel Portable Grill

The USP of the next grill on our list is its portability. It is suitable for indoor usage. It has a cooking area of 276 in². With the weight of just 23 lbs, you can move it around.

The briefcase type design along with the handle and folding legs ensures that portability is not an issue at all. When you want to set it up on any surface, you can erect the legs, and you can use it as a table-top pellet grill.

One of the first things which you will notice about this pit boss pellet grill is that it has a stainless steel body. The advantage of stainless steel is its durability. Moreover, it can amalgamate perfectly into the interiors of your kitchen since most of the pellet grillers today use stainless steel. The outer body consists of 430 stainless steel.

The grid uses 304 stainless steel. As a result, you dont need to worry about the outer-body at all. It consists of 2 burners having a cumulative Btu rating of 20,000. You can get enough heat for grilling and searing your meat and other delicacies.

The individual burner knobs allow you to control the temperature for each one separately. The griller also consists of a temperature gauge which allows you to monitor the temperature without any problem. The temperature can go as high as 600°F which will enable you to cook your food quickly.

Pros:

  • Can attain a high temperature
  • Comes along with hose attachment for propane tank

Cons:

Pit Boss Vs Traeger Construction

The build quality of your pellet grill is another important point to focus on. Whether you snag a bargain or pay above the odds for your best grill, you still want to know that youre getting something thats going to last season after season. The exterior needs to be durable enough to withstand temperature extremes and turbulent weather, while your grating needs to be resistant to rust and corrosion after prolonged use.

Traeger

For the exterior, youre really best with something like hardened or powder-coated steel. For the cooking grills/grates, you want something like cast-iron. In terms of build quality, it seems that with some models, Traeger has the edge. Just look at how they build the grates on their grill solid cast-iron with a non-toxic coating to keep food from sticking.

Look at the weight difference in the two pellet grills, the Traeger weighs in at 145 lbs while the Pit Boss weighs in at 118 lbs. Thats a pretty big difference. Im a firm believer that weight = quality. I know they could stick some things on the sides that would increase the weight, but overall, better materials = heavier grill.

Pit Boss

Pit Boss uses similar materials and elements, but from what Ive seen, they arent always of similar, consistent quality. That said, the overwhelming consensus seems to be that Pit Boss produces the best looking grills. For the two grills Im comparing, my winner is Traeger.
