Which Weber should I buy?| Spirit vs Genesis II vs Summit gas grill

First of all, the first thing we see: the stainless steel or porcelain-coated cast iron exterior!

Since were working with fire, we cannot stress enough how important it is to have good ventilation, regardless of whether youre using natural gas or a propane tank.

Ventilation ensures that your cooking is safe. After all, SAFETY is the first step to ensuring great quality cooking!

Dont forget that fire needs to have just enough oxygen to power up the combustion reaction and into your choice of meats.

The temperature at which you cook your meat pretty much entails the quality and flavor of your food itself.

We firmly believe that the best grills, whether gas grill or not, are those that have a built-in thermometer in them so you could monitor proper cooking temperatures.

This also helps you out with seamless preparation and cooking during your grilling party.

After, were certain you wouldnt want to serve burnt or uncooked meat!

Control Panel

We just have to admit it cooking and grilling can get MESSY.

No one wants to see their grills breaking down or losing control of everything theyre trying to do while grilling.

A stainless steel control panel basically ensures your grilling baby holds under pressure, ESPECIALLY when trying to cook a ton of food all at once.

You should also ask about the quality of stainless steel control panels when buying your model!

Why You Should Trust Us

Before opening the valve on a single propane tank, we spoke with more than a dozen experts.

Joe Salvaggio of Big Apple BBQ spent two hours explaining the fundamentals of gas-grill design, function, materials, and maintenance. Joe and his brother Tony have run Big Apple BBQ, one of the New York regions leading grill shops, for over 30 years. The store carries grills from multiple manufacturers, ranging from $400 backyard portables to five-figure custom built-ins. Because Salvaggio is an independent retailer, he was able to speak freely about what he saw as the relative strengths and weaknesses of various designs.

At the 2017 Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Expo, we interviewed senior product managers from almost every major grill-maker in attendance, including all the brands that wound up featured in our test: Weber, Broil King, and Napoleon. We spoke with multiple makers of high-end grills, too, as they predominate at HPBE. Though we wouldnt be testing their grills, we felt that knowing what goes into making a $4,000 grill helped us evaluate the less expensive grills in our test.

We backed this reporting with comprehensive researchthe in-depth, professional reviews at AmazingRibs.com being a standout sourceand hands-on time with grills at the big hardware chains.

How We Tested Gas Grills

Over the course of four days in Spring 2017, we put our gas grills through a battery of tests designed to demonstrate their qualities and highlight their differences. We cooked burgers on high heat to see how well the grills seared meat and how intense and even was the heat they could generate across the whole grate surface. We slow-grilled cut-up chickens to see if the grills could hold a low temperature evenly across the whole grate. And we roasted whole chickens indirectly on both low and high heat to see if the grills could create browned skin and perfectly cook meat without charring. Sam Sifton, editor of the Cooking section of The New York Times joined us for these tests. In 2018 we repeated these tests, pitting the new Weber Spirit II E-310 against our upgrade pick, the Weber Genesis II E-310.

For the high-heat, whole-grate burger testan indicator of the grills ability to pump out uniform, high heat without creating an infernowe heated the grills on high with their lids down for 15 minutes . We then oiled the grates and distributed 12 to 15 6-ounce patties across the whole cooking surface. While the burgers cooked we kept an eye out for flare-upstheyre not desirable, as they char the meat and create rancid smokeand looked at the evenness of cooking on the different areas of the grates. After about 10 minutes of cooking , we compared how well each grill had seared the burgers, looked for any patties that were charred or still unacceptably raw, and took a taste.

Pellet Loading And Consumption

Due to the narrow profile of the grill hopper, pellets often fall in front of the hopper, when filling, and get trapped between the hopper and the grill in no mans land.

This area cant be reached with a brush or any normal tool to remove the fallen pellets. This issue revealed itself over time of using the grill. The only good way I have found so far to get the pellets removed is with compressed air.

The good news is: I have never had them catch on fire.

Even when I am careful, there are always a few pellets that fall into that area. This doesnt really happen on other pellet grills due to most of them having hoppers on the end of the grill versus running along the back.

I have tested other pellet grills and not had the same hassles loading pellets and losing so many.

Removing pellets is easy if you want to change them out .

Keeping It Cooking: Maintaining Your Weber Grill

Keeping your gas grill clean and maintained is not only important for ensuring it has a long life, its important for keeping you safe. Here are some of the most important regular maintenance tasks you should be doing on a regular basis to keep your Weber grill in tip-top shape.

Check for Leaks

Weber grills are designed to remain free from leaks, but things happen and leaks may occur. One way to check for leaks in your hose or tank is to use a soapy water solution in and around the connection points of your tank and tubes. Then turn on your tank, and if you find bubbles forming its a pretty sure sign that youve got a leak. This means you should not use the grill under any circumstances until the leak has been fixed.

Clean Your Burners

Use a grill cleaning brush to remove food pieces, oxidation and other debris from the surface of your burners. This not only keeps them looking clean but also keeps burners from becoming blocked, which can lead to fires.

Get Rid of Excess GreaseGrease will naturally collect on parts of your grill, but too much grease can be damaging and unsafe. Use a scraper to scrape off any grease thats been solidified on the grill down into the grease tray. From here you can empty the solidified pieces from the grease tray down into the catch pan. The catch pan can then be emptied, and youre ready to go once you replace a new aluminum liner. Easy peasy.

Weber 62006001 Genesis Ii S

Why youll love it:

The genesis II S-435 has four burners and it heats up fast and easily. But then gas grills always do.

What they dont do, however, is sync your grill with your phone, so you can keep tabs on the grilling and cooking from anywhere in the house . The Genesis II E-335 above does though.

What we didnt like

  • No grill light included in this model
  • Grill cover not included with this Genesis model

This is the biggest incentive for me to get this grill. It is perfect for a multi-tasker like me, and its all courtesy of iGrill 3.

I can grill several meats, sauté veggies on one burner and simmer some sauce in the side burner AND still have room left for more cooking.

I know. Sounds like I am a crazy scientist on the grill, but the Genesis II S-435 is highly efficient, so you can get it going on different fronts simultaneously. Read on for the pros and cons to learn what makes this grill infamous.

How To Maintain A Weber Grill

Without a doubt, the best way to keep your Weber grill in great condition is by cleaning it at least once a week.

Here are the best ways to maintain your Weber grill:

1. Make sure you get all the charred food particles, oil, and other stuff off the grill.

2. You should also oil the grates regularly. But dont oil them too much or it will cause the grease to burn off and leave a film on the grill.

3. Dont leave your grill unattended when it is smoking or cooking over high heat.

4. Clean the bottom and the sides with a metal scrubbing pad.

5. Once you are done cleaning the grill, wipe it down with a paper towel to get rid of any leftover grease and residue.

If you are using a digital thermometer, you should oil it until the thermometer reads 400 degrees F. When you do this, you are ensuring that all the surfaces of your grill are evenly heated. This is very important. Heating up one area of your grill while leaving another area cold can result in uneven cooking and, in turn, an early demise for your grill.

Use all three gas burners for direct heat cooking.

Offset food for convectional cooking with you Weber.

Anyone who has owned or used a Weber knows this is not one of those off-brand barbecues that has a lot of hot and cold spots because it is made to cook with the hood down to trap the heat in the firebox. Although Weber BBQs are intended for use with the hood down the grill parts are manufactured well enough to create an even cooking surface across the entire grate. Weber cares enough about the food you eat that Weber chefs publish cook books and if you are on their mailing list you will get a new recipe in your e-mail every week. These are dishes created by full-time Weber chefs in the restaurant Weber owns. Caring about the food you cook on your Weber is not a marketing gimmick because Weber is a true barbeque company. All they make is BBQ grills and they do it great.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers

We wish Weber would take a cue from some competitors and make the bars of its warming racks run front to back, parallel to the main grates. That way, you could easily slide a spatula under stuff thats warming. As it is, the warming-rack bars run edge to edge, and you have to awkwardly jimmy a spatula in there sideways.

The Spirit II E-310 should come with a grill cover. It doesnt, nor did any grill in our test group. Youll need to buy one separately Webers dedicated Spirit II cover costs about $55, and a well-regarded generic cover costs about $20.

The Many Parts Of A Weber Grill

As we take a look at the components of a gas grill, lets start our journey from the outside-in and begin with the first part of the grill you seethe exterior shell. And perhaps the most important part of that exterior is the piece that George Stephen revolutionized when he introduced it all those years agothe lid.

The Gas Grill Lid and Exterior

The highest-quality gas grills feature a lid that perfectly balances all of the features and tasks for which it must be responsible in ensuring a safe, effective and delicious grilling experience. First of all, there must be proper ventilation for safe and quality cooking. The best grills also offer a highly visible thermometer on the lid to ensure proper cooking temperature easily and seamlessly during preparation and cooking. Because cooking can get messy and grills are often exposed to the elements, a stainless steel control panel can be an excellent feature to ensure that the grill controls hold up over time and under pressure.

Beyond the lid, youll want a grill with plenty of exterior surface space for keeping your tools, ingredients and cooking materials handy while grilling. Great grills have wing tables on either side with plenty of surface area for everything you might need, and Weber grill tables can be folded down when not in use. Nearly all Weber grills also feature either an open or closed storage area underneath the grill for additional materials.
