12 to 14 gauge steel depending on whether its external or internal, that build in the field of a green mountain grill is solid. Note that they did make those upgrades to the cart on the prime model.
The shelf that is in the front of the prime level some people will actually prefer to keep it or not. When it comes to transferring food from a tray, it seems more useful than not.
There is quite a big difference in terms of the build quality especially around the cart between the choice and prime range of Green Mountain Grill pellet grills.
I am putting this in the context of a comparison to other builds. Also, the Davy Crockett is primarily designed as a portable camping or tailgating pellet grill so Im probably more talking about the Daniel Boone or Jim Bowie models across this entire scorecard.

- Jason: My involvement is in sales and marketing support and development. I want us to have more of a presence in the social media world and easier to find on the Internet as a whole and not to sell our product, but to inform folks more about pellet grilling and Green Mountain Grills.
- Andy: Can you give some of the history of GMG, when and how did it get its start?
- Jason: I watched my father for years cook on a pellet grill. Everyone was always amazed by the taste of the food. My father is an innovator and always made comments about how this grill he was grilling on could be so much better. He was in the import export business and had a strong comfort level with manufacturing for decades as well. These two loves merged in 2007 when he decided to build his first prototype. Today, you continue to see this innovative spirit in all of our products.
- Andy: Can you explain how a pellet grill works?
- Jason: First, a motor turns an auger which feeds pellets into a firebox.
Second, a hot rod automatically ignites the pellets, and a combustion fan keeps them burning.
Third, a Fan inside the hopper maintains positive pressure which prevents burn-back in the auger tube.
Finally, a sensor mounted inside the grill sends data to the on-board computer ten times every second, and the controller adjusts the air and pellet flow to maintain the temperature you set

Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett and Jim Bowiewhat do these three grills from GMG have in common? All of them were made in China. However, you see the historical American figures, hear of it as an American company and think that they must make their grills in the United States. You would be completely mistaken. Since they started the company in 2006, they have always made their grills in China.
This is one of the reasons that we find it important to understand the difference between an American company and an American made company. American made companies support manufacturing in the United States and do a lot more for our economy. In some cases, American made may even come from a foreign company like Honda or Toyota.
On the other hand, an American company pays taxes to the U.S., which does help our country, but it doesnt prop us up as much as companies that support manufacturing jobs in the U.S.
We find Green Mountain Grills potentially deceitfulalthough, well let you decide whether they did this intentionally or notbecause it almost looks like they try to fool well-intentioned customers into thinking of their products as American made with a loose association from naming it after historical American figures. There was no reason that they had to name their grills like this other than to potentially mislead consumers.
Pitts & Spitts Grills
One noticeable trait of Pitts & Spits is their high quality stainless steel and carbon steel construction. These grills look good and are built for use and abuse and good heat retention.
These grills are something youd see in a commercial kitchen but are built for competitions and people like you and me.
Texas has some of the best BBQ and also one of the best grill manufacturers. Pitts and Spitts manufacture their grills in Texas. These designs are traditional, but these pellet grills deliver performance and quality. They also make charcoal grills using the same quality standards.

The Original Pk Grill & Smoker
The Original PK grill is the industry standard on no-fluff grilling at an affordable price. This company has won many awards and is used by many pitmasters. It is a lightweight hand-poured cast aluminum grill similar to those made in the 1950s and 1960s.
The key is mainly the aluminum body and its 4-point Ventilation system that is entirely adjustable. The surface is rectangular, making it easy to set coals for direct or indirect cooking. The grill is known for perfect airflow, heat control, and even heat distribution.
Sure is not a pellet smoker, but this specific model is not made in other countries and is a fantastic camping grill or portable smokermade in Arkansas, USA.
Do Green Mountain Grills Create Jobs In The United States
The manufacturing jobs from Green Mountain Grills go to the Hubei region of China, but does GMG have jobs for Americans? At their corporate office in Reno, Nevada, they have dozens of American employees. In total, they have 86 employees at the time of writing this, which shows you that this isnt the largest company out there. The company has many employees in China. They had annual revenue of $14 million. To put this into perspective, Traeger Grills, a much larger company, had annual revenue of $168.9 million.
For that reason, wed like to cut this company some slack. Theyre a smaller company trying to survive in a cutthroat business environment. We do wish theyd stop using historical American heroes as names for their grills when made in China, however, because some people may see that as dishonest marketing. If theyre going to manufacture in China, they should be upfront about it as well if they want people to respect them as a business.

How we determine space: We give a max amount, based on packing items edge to edge on the grate. A pellet grill, however, has hot spots at the edges of the grate that arent over the drip pan. This means that at max food capacity, youll have to move/rotate food to prevent burning or overcooking. The effective capacity is the number of items that fit without having to rotate. In other words, its the capacity without being affected by the hotter edge zones of the grilling chamber.
We classify this as a small-sized pellet grill, based on the size of its main cooking grate. The best comparison grills for size are the recteq RT-340 or the Pit Boss 340.
The Davy Crockett will hold three average-sized chickens, four if you pack them in tightly. You could easily cook two full racks of pork ribs flat and two average sized pork butts. It has 9 of height clearancespace for cooking a 12-13 lb turkey, and you could cook two at a time if thawed. Maximum space for 16 burgers, but effective capacity is 9 burgers.

Arent Traeger Grills Made In The Usa
Traeger, the longest and most established pellet grill brand were originally manufactured in Oregon and were produced in the USA up until 2006 when the Traeger family sold the company. In 2006 the patent that Traeger had on the design of pellet grills/smokers since 1986 ran out, then more makes/brands of pellet grills started to enter the market.
Traeger felt they had to move manufacturing abroad to expand the company to make it viable while still offering a product at a price their customers are happy to pay. Hence, today Traeger pellet grills are made in China.

A Good Design For Portability With A Few Hiccups
There are several small pellet grills available on the market, but the GMG Davy Crockettis one of only a few truly portable ones. Portable pellet grills are useful for tailgating, for picnics and campouts, or for special events when you dont want to haul a larger grill in the bed of a truck. The Davy Crockett is one of the two true portable grills available right now, along with the recteq RT-340. The Davy Crockett, unlike the recteq portable, is meant to only be used away from home, while the Trailblazer can be used full-time on your deck or patio as well as taken on the road.
How Portable Is It
The Davy Crockett will easily fit in the trunk of most cars when folded up. The legs fold into a built-in handle for carrying, though to be honest they dont do so very easily. In fact, folding the legs is either a two-person job or one that runs a serious risk of injury. We found the legs very likely to trap your arm between it and the grill body when collapsing them, with no real option other than to ask someone to help.
Its portable, in that it can go anywhere. But dont think you can just grab it and go. The grill weighs 68 pounds and so, while it can be carried, its not the easiest thing to lift up into a vehicle. We found the process of folding the grill up, unfolding it, and transporting it to be an easy two-person job or a very cumbersome and even dangerous one-person job. Seriously, watch your wrists and forearms, as those legs can clamp down hard on them when folding.
Their customer service claims field testing with a car battery and getting 40-50 hours of cook time. We took the Davy Crockett on a 5-day fishing trip to Michigan and ran it, along with a recteq off of one car battery and an inverter for 2 very long cooks and several short cooks and never had an issue. On a side note, we had two days of dirt-splashing severe rain and the GMG cleaned up just fine afterwards with no issues.
