How To Choose A Gas Grill: A Buying Guide
The very first thing youll need to do is to determine which type of gas source youll be using to fuel your gas grill: Natural Gas which requires a hook up on your patio, or Liquid Propane , which means youll be fueling your grill with propane from a tank.
The answer to this question will narrow down your choices. Many of the best gas grills on our list do come in either Natural Gas or Liquid Propane models, but not all!
This video here covers several other important aspects about Gas Grills in depth, such as the grate/grill material differences, the number of burners, flame-tamers, and the types of burners. Check it out:
To recap , you want to decide on the following:
- How many burners do I want? The more burners you have, the larger the cooking area and the more versatility you have . If youre counting on cooking simple foods for 2 or 3 people, youll likely be just fine with 1 or 2 burners.
- What kind of cooking grates do you want? Stainless steel and porcelain-enameled/coated cast iron are the 2 popular types.
- Are Flavorizer bars important to you? These flame-taming systems that sit between the burners flame and the grill reduce flare-ups, protect the burners, and convert drippings into flavor-infusing smoke. Not all grills come with flame tamers, although many in this list do.

Testing Notes: What To Look For In A Gas Grill
BTWho?: BTUs are an outdated and easily manipulated measurement of grill power. The numbers grillmakers provide are calculated on per hour measurements, and are derived from data on how much fuel the grill burns, not its temperature levels. A bigger grill that chews through more gas could have a sky-high BTU figure and not breach the 500 degree barrier, which should be the absolute bare minimum. Ignore BTUs and look for max temperature output, which is a better gauge of a grill’s power.
Want steaks? Go infrared: Infrared burners get dramatically hotter than standard gas burners. Using standard burners, most gas grills will struggle to exceed 600 to 700 degrees, and won’t develop a browned crust on a steak before you’ve overcooked it the infrared burner solves this issue by channeling heat from a burner into a ceramic tile, which converts that convective heat into infrared heat, dramatically increasing its intensity. You need an infrared burner to brown a steak properly. It won’t matter how long you let the grill warm up with the lid down if the grill’s max temperature is meh. Note: some companies give infrared burners a branded name like Sear Zone or something in that vein.
You need a meat thermometer: Let’s not mince words the temperature probes built into most grills are absolutely worthless. Instead, get one of our recommended instant-read thermometers.

Kalamazoo Gourmet K500 Hybrid Fire
- Grates are thick steel with narrow slots cut into them, so food doesn’t fall through
- Objectively a wildly expensive product
Cooking Space: 506 square inchesGas Type: Propane or Natural Gas Max Temperature: 1,000° F
Kalamazoos grills are made to order in Kalamazoo, Michigan under the watchful eye of its Chief Designer, Head of Product and total gear nerd Russ Faulk. The price tag its grills demand means youre not buying a summer cookout machine youre buying another kitchen. Thankfully, its functionality backs that up.
A fact: there is no grill like the Hybrid Fire grill. It can cook with gas, yes, but it can also cook with wood, charcoal and even pellets. The build quality is such that it feels like it was made out of aircraft parts. The gas burners are cut from cast bronze for goodness sake. If youre in a place to comfortably spend nearly twenty grand on a gas grill, you buy this and you dont look back.

Natural Gas Or Propane
So, NG or LP grills? As is usually the case, it is impossible to be definite about the answer, which should be: it depends.
Natural gas grills advantages:
- Convenience. Contrary to having a propane gas tank, with a natural gas grill, you won’t ever have to worry about running out of gas.
- Cost-efficiency . Natural gas is simply cheaper than propane.
- Eco-friendliness. Natural gas burns a lot cleaner.
Natural gas grills disadvantages:
- Lack of portability. A natural gas grill is connected to the gas installation, so it can’t be moved.
- Initial costs. Natural gas grills are generally more expensive than propane grills plus, you will most probably need a professional to install the grill in the first place.
Propane grills advantages:
- Mobility. When you have a propane gas tank, you can move it along with the grill wherever you want.
- Higher temperatures. Since a propane grill burns hotter, it may be a better option if you are a grilling purist who pays attention to high temperatures.
- Eco-friendliness. Propane gas tanks contain no lead, produce less carbon dioxide and water vapor, and have low GHG emissions.
Propane grills disadvantages:
Technologies Or Additional Features
Over time, the standards of people who love outdoor cooking are rising. Considering these demands, manufacturers have introduced some handy features. Some of these features can contribute to your experience significantly.
These technologies include flame tamers that save you from flare-ups. You must look for flame tamers if there are children in the house for additional safety.
Best Gas Grill Under $250
- Goes out of stock somewhat regularly
Cooking Space: 430 square inchesGas Type: Propane Max Temperature: ~600° F
If you just want to cook and dont give a damn about looks, this is the gas grill you want. Its exterior is cheap-looking, but its guts are equivalent to high-dollar competition. The interior is rust-proof cast aluminum and its fitted with H-shaped burners instead of the usual straight-line design, a change that delivers more heat to more areas of the grill, and improves its capacity for low heat cooks. As with most grills, ignore the built-in temperature reader completely its always wrong.
Best Grills: Bells And Whistles
If youre investing in a higher-end gas grill, Anderson appreciates the added perk of rotisseries, which he said are a must for the best tasting grilled chicken the rotating grill cage bastes the meat in its own juices. Otherwise, youll find options like built-in lights for night cooking, side burners, ceramic infrared burners, warming doors for finished foods, porcelain coating, searing stations, smart connectivity and easy-packing features.
How To Install A Natural Gas Grill
If you dont already have the natural gas line connected to your grill, have a certified gas plumber to do the connection for you. They will first check the capacity of your natural gas meter to determine if they can add a line to the grill. If the meter is small, they will switch it up to a bigger one to accommodate the extra demand from the grill. Once the connection is done and theyve confirmed that there are no gas leaks, its time to hook up the grill hose.
Ensure that the gas is turned off and all control knobs on the grill are in the OFF position.
Confirm that theres no debris at the end of the hose, then insert the hose connector onto the gas valve, listening for the click that indicates the hose is secured into place.
Best Budget Natural Gas Grill Weber Spirit E
Natural gas grills are far from wallet-friendly, but the Weber Spirit E-310 manages to combine a decent range of features with good build quality to make it our pick for best budget natural gas grill.
The E-310 is the smallest of the grills on our list, with a total cooking area of 529 square inches, which combines 424 square inches of primary cooking area with a 105 square inch warming rack.
Three stainless steel burners provide 32,000 BTUs of heat, which, combined with the cooking space, is perfect for hosting a standard BBQ or everyday family grilling, but is probably going to be a little small for a grand cookout.
The cast-iron cooking grates are porcelain-enameled for corrosion resistance and to make them non-stick. The lid and cook box are also porcelain-enameled to make them equally corrosion resistant.
The E-310 doesnt have a vast amount of features, but it does have two side tables, six tool hooks, a below grill cabinet, and an easy-to-clean grease management system.
What we like:
- The total cooking area of 529 square inches and 32,000 BTUs of heat is more than enough to handle standard family cooking.
- The cook box, grill plates, and lid are all porcelain-enameled.
- The E-310 has a grease management system for easier cleanup.
What we dont like:
- The E-310 is a little on the small side if you are looking to cater for significant events regularly.
- Not all of the E-310 is made of stainless steel, some of it is just painted steel.

How Do You Clean A Gas Grill
The easiest way to clean a gas grill is with a grill brush. Most people choose to clean their grill before and after cooking on it when the surface is either preheated or still warm from cooking. The heat helps sterilize the surface and loosen grime. Once the grill is hot, you can simply swipe the grill brush across the surface until the grates are noticeably clean.

How We Tested Gas Grills
Over the course of four days in Spring 2017, we put our gas grills through a battery of tests designed to demonstrate their qualities and highlight their differences. We cooked burgers on high heat to see how well the grills seared meat and how intense and even was the heat they could generate across the whole grate surface. We slow-grilled cut-up chickens to see if the grills could hold a low temperature evenly across the whole grate. And we roasted whole chickens indirectly on both low and high heat to see if the grills could create browned skin and perfectly cook meat without charring. Sam Sifton, editor of the Cooking section of The New York Times joined us for these tests. In 2018 we repeated these tests, pitting the new Weber Spirit II E-310 against our upgrade pick, the Weber Genesis II E-310.
For the high-heat, whole-grate burger testan indicator of the grills ability to pump out uniform, high heat without creating an infernowe heated the grills on high with their lids down for 15 minutes . We then oiled the grates and distributed 12 to 15 6-ounce patties across the whole cooking surface. While the burgers cooked we kept an eye out for flare-upstheyre not desirable, as they char the meat and create rancid smokeand looked at the evenness of cooking on the different areas of the grates. After about 10 minutes of cooking , we compared how well each grill had seared the burgers, looked for any patties that were charred or still unacceptably raw, and took a taste.
