Since the dawn of time , when you thought of the fast food chicken sandwich, you surely thought of Wendy’s. While the taste and flavor will always carry a hint of nostalgia for us, unfortunately, with all the competition there is now, we’re sad to say it’s obsolete. According to QSR magazine, Wendy’s Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich features a marinated chicken that’s then breaded in a pepper-forward coating and completed with a piece of lettuce and tomato.

Sorry, old friend, but this one just isn’t remarkable. While we enjoy the peppery coating on the chicken, too many times we’ve been let down with a lukewarm chicken filet, one sad piece of lettuce, and a lackluster, flavorless tomato. The familiarity factor has this one maybe a bit higher on the list than it should be, honestly, but let’s let it be for nostalgia’s sake, shall we? We think we’ll stick with a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger and Frosty on our next visit. Dave, we think it’s time for an upgrade.

If you’ve never been to a Culver’s, you should find one. They really stress quality ingredients, and practice a friendly service each time they dutifully take your order. Culver’sif you don’t knowmakes their bread and butter on… butterburgers. But they also offer up a chicken sandwich. And wouldn’t you know it? That’s a darn tasty sandwich.

The Crispy Chicken Sandwich is in the family of “southern style.” The texture has a nice flavor to it it tastes like a real piece of chicken. Culver’s standard toppings aren’t what you’d expect you get lettuce, tomato, and pickles, but there are no condiment present. No mayo, no mustard, no secret sauce. Yet somehow, you won’t even miss it. The tomato provides all the moisture you’ll need for this chicken sandwich. You’re not thinking chicken when you go to Culver’s, but this is an excellent and unexpected chicken sandwich well worth adding into your chicken eating repertoire.

Grilled Chicken Club and Grilled Chicken sandwich scored Chick-fil-A two spots in the top two. In order of importance, Chic-fil-A rounded out the top five followed by Wendys, Hardees, Zaxbys, McDonalds, Bojangles and Burger King from last in line. From here on out, we want to make it clear that we enjoyed all these chicken sandwiches. Some are just better than others, and that’s the case for Arby’s.

Arby’s Crispy Chicken Sandwich isn’t a revelation, but it’s a solid attempt. The chicken patty is juicy and has a nice pepperiness to it, while the fresh tomatoes are plentiful and succulent. Meanwhile, the iceberg lettuce doesn’t provide much of anything for the sandwich, other than a slight crunch. Our main reason for ranking this sandwich so low is the lack of sauce or mayonnaise. Though the chicken patty itself isn’t dry, the sandwich as a whole was.

This Crispy Chicken Sandwich could be improved with some pickles. A nice tang could really tie the entire sandwich together and make it feel whole. And, of course, not as dry. Why Its The Best Choice:

Similar to Carls Jr, the Habit is much better and making grilled chicken sandwiches than the fried stuff, and their chicken club is unlike any other grilled sandwich currently in the fast food space.

The chicken filet is thin and marinated in some sort of lemon-herb marinade that keeps each bite tasting juicy and not dry. The fresh avocado is a nice touch that adds a creamy texture and earthy buttery flavors that pair well with the smokey bacon.

That bacon does more than add simple smoked notes, it helps to add more texture to the sandwich so that the avocado doesnt make it too mushy.

A Simple Hack To Make It Better:

Ditch the mayo. You have marinated chicken and avocado, you dont really need to worry about dryness. The mayo just gets in the way here.

Even with the butter, the sandwich overall is spectacularly dry. We’d prefer a spread of mayonnaise or some form of aioli. We can appreciate simplicity , but we’d prefer the added flavor and juiciness a sauce could add here.

The chicken fillet doesnt measure up to that of other contenders in the chicken sandwich arena, especially Popeyes. Literally. Its much smaller and thinner, though we found it to be well-seasoned. The batter isn’t anything memorable and certainly doesn’t taste as if it were dipped and fried in-house like Popeyes or Churchs.

In this instance, Shake Shack’s chicken club is a whole that is less than the sum of its parts. The honey sauce here isnt overwhelmingly sweet because its infused with habanero, giving it a serious kick and a citrusy brightness that helps to balance it out.

This sandwich triples down on the heat by adding pepper jack cheese, and Wendys spicy chicken filet, but there is also a lot of earthy smokiness courtesy of the bacon and fried dill chips. Its sweet, spicy, crunchy, and overwhelming in all of the best ways.

Asiago Ranch Chicken Club Classic/Spicy: This sandwich wouldve taken the top spot if not for this new bourbon-backed sando.

Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich Classic: Just as delicious, but significantly less spicy.

Big Bacon Cheddar Chicken Classic/Spicy: Its fine, but tastes better in burger form.

Original Chicken Sandwich Classic/Spicy: Too basic.

Crispy Chicken Sandwich: The dollar menu version of Wendys chicken sandwich. This is highly processed patty territory, avoid at all costs.
