Try Cooking In Packets

How to Roast Vegetables on a BBQ : BBQ Grilling Tips

Don’t feel like babysitting your vegetables on the grill? Try cooking them in packets instead. This method works great for dense vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, or other root vegetables. Simply place a 24-inch-long piece of foil on the counter and lightly coat with nonstick cooking spray. Arrange thinly-sliced vegetables on a single layer, slightly overlapping, on the foil. Leave a two-inch border on all sides. Fold foil over and pinch the edges together, making a packet. Place the packet on the grill. Cover the grill and cook until the vegetables are tender . When you open a packet to check doneness, be careful of steam.

Advice For Serving Roasted Vegetables

Serving roasted vegetables is very simple. Youll want to add a bit of salt and some pepper to the vegetables before you eat them.

Some people also choose to add certain herbs and spices to the vegetables to make things a bit more interesting. You dont have to do this, but it could improve the experience depending on what you like.

Its best to season the veggies before you take them out of the pan if possible. Throw in the seasoning that you wish to use and then toss the vegetables along with the oil.

Once this is done, youll be able to remove the vegetables and put them on a plate or in a bowl to be served. Discard the oil in the pan properly and then you can go sit down to eat.

It is worth mentioning that you can add some zest to roasted vegetables by using a bit of lemon juice. Not everyone likes this, though.

Tips For The Best Grilled Vegetables

Roasted Vegetables

In my effort to keep things simple and my eating clean, I skip the marinade and the skewers and simply slice and season.

  • Slice the vegetables the same thickness so they cook at the same rate.I use a handheld mandoline to make my zucchini, eggplant, and onion slices perfectly coordinate. I aim for slices that fall somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 I cant do math so I eyeball it. Slicing the veggies too thin will make them too tender as and disintegrate on the grill.
  • Put oil on the vegetables before grilling. Follow the golden rule of grilling: oil what you grill, not the grill itself. Drizzle the vegetables with olive oil then spread it evenly with your fingers. The mushrooms will absorb the oil quickly so work fast but dont fret too much about them, theyll produce plenty of their own juice.
  • Season simply. Sprinkle the vegetables somewhat generously with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. They will absorb the salt as they cook, enhancing their inherent sweetness. Feel free to add dried herbs such as oregano, mint, tarragon, or basil if youd like.
  • Grill em up hot. Start your veggies over medium heat, about 350°F to 450°F. Lay long slices and asparagus or carrots crosswise over the grates so they dont fall through. Close the grill lid and cook the vegetables undisturbed, flipping after 3-5 minutes.

Step 5: Once off the grill, place veggies in a ziplock bag and seal it up. Allow them to remain in there until they begin to cool down, usually around 10 minutes. Use this step if you want to be able to remove the skins.

To make a grilled salad, dont grill as long so the flesh maintains some crunch and skip the sweating. Simply chill a bit to stop the cooking and chop to desired consistency . Add some salt and pepper with a little olive oil and garlic, maybe even a little cilantro then serve it up with a nice juicy steak.

Step 6: Remove from bag and allow to sit for 1-2 minutes. Then peel off skin. For smaller peppers like jalapeños, it may help to run them under a little bit of water. But for large peppers and tomatoes, the skin usually comes right off.

How Do You Roast Vegetables At The Same Time

To roast several different types of vegetables at the same time on one pan, cut similar-density vegetables into uniform pieces so they cook evenly.

Alternatively, dont be afraid to roast heartier vegetables, like potatoes and butternut squash, separately from more delicate veggies, like green beans and asparagus.

A third strategy is to roast your veggies in stages. Start with the vegetables that have the longest cooking time and add faster-cooking vegetables to the pan later in the roasting process.

      Can You Use A Grill

Many people wonder whether you can use a grill to roast vegetables or not. Technically, the answer would be no because grilling is a different cooking method.

However, you can get very similar results if you use your grill to prepare vegetables. If you only have access to an outdoor grill, then you can still make tasty vegetables that will turn out very similar to roasted veggies.

You can heat up your grill and then place vegetables on a sheet tray of some sort. Line the sheet tray with parchment paper so that it will be very easy to clean things up when youre done.

After youve done this, you can add a bit of fat to the tray to help the vegetables with caramelization. For example, you could use butter or a bit of olive oil.

Tender veggies should be done in about fifteen minutes or so. Heavier veggies could wind up needing twenty-five minutes or longer.

Its best to keep an eye on things since you dont want to burn the vegetables. Once things are done, the taste will be pretty close to that of roasted vegetables, but it wont be exactly the same.

Regardless, knowing that you can prepare vegetables this way is nice. It gives you something else that you can do with your grill when you dont want to simply make hamburgers or other grilled meats.

How To Fire Roast Vegetables On The Grill

Step 1: Heat up the Bbq grill to medium high-high.

Step 2: Select the veggies you would like to fire-roast, wash and dry them, then put a very light coat of oil on over the top. We use sunflower, safflower or olive oil as they have a medium smoke point. Or even easier, use a liquid oil spray.

Step 3: Place veggies on the grill. Let them sit until you begin to see char marks.

Step 4: Turn or rotate vegetables to their different sides until all sides are charred. The whole piece does not need to be completely black, dont overcook it. What you are looking for in peppers is black char marks or a blistered skin. In tomatoes, its a slight char with blistered, split, orange tinged skin. Onions, look for a nice char as basically you are just caramelizing it for sweetness and flavor.

The roasting process takes between 7-10 minutes usually depending on how hot your grill is. Once satisfied with char, remove veggies from grill.

      Tips For Grilled Veggies

      • Cut each variety of vegetable into evenly sized pieces so that they cook at the same rate.

Why Are My Roasted Vegetables Soggy

The best, healthy, quick and easy oven roasted vegetables ...

There are several reasons why your roasted vegetables may be turning out soggy:

      • The oven temperature was too low. In most cases, you want your oven at 400° or 425°F.
      • The pan was too crowded. If everything is crammed together on the sheet pan, your vegetables will steam instead of caramelizing. Give your vegetables enough space to breathe, which may mean using two sheet pans.
      • There was too much oil. One or two tablespoons of oil is typically enough to coat your veggies.

In addition to these potential missteps, avoid other oven-roasted vegetable mistakes, too.

How Do You Keep Roasted Vegetables Warm

Roasted vegetables taste best when you eat them immediately, straight from the oven. But if youre cooking for a crowd and need to keep them warm for a few hours before serving, place them in your oven drawer or keep them warm in a low-temperature ovenaround 200°F.

To reheat roasted vegetables, drizzle them with a little more oil and stick them in a 450°F oven for 5 to 10 minutes until theyre warmed through. You can also broil them for a few minutes.

How Long Do You Keep Vegetables On The Grill

Cooking times for grilled vegetables will vary depending on the thickness of your slices. Grill with the lid down to create an oven environment and check the progress of your cooking half-way through cook times.

      • Artichokes: Boil first for 10-12 minutes then quarter and grill 4-6 minutes
      • Asparagus: 6-8 minutes
      • Tomato: 6-8 minutes halved
      • Zucchini: 5-7 minutes

The veggies may look a little dry as they come off the heat, but will begin to sweat and deflate as they rest.
