What Wood Pellets Pair Well With Grilled Pizza
These are our favorite wood pellets for different grilled pizzas.
- Hickory, which we recommend for our Combination Pizza
- Pecan for our Grilled Margherita Pizza
Wood pellets with a stronger flavor profile like hickory, work best with meatier pizzas like our sausage-topped Combination Pizza because they hold their own against the stronger flavors of the meat.
Milder wood pellets like alder are great for vegetarian options like our Baked Wood-Fired Pizza because you dont want the strong flavor of the wood pellets to overpower the more delicate flavors of your toppings.
Add Your Preferred Toppings
Gently remove the grilled pizza from the grill using your baking or cookie sheet or pizza peel. Using a spatula or tongs, flip the grilled pizza over to have the grilled side on top. You may want to move the pizza to a cooler part of the grill while you add toppings.
Quickly brush the top grilled surface with olive oil and sprinkle your favorite toppings and pizza sauce, add fresh Mozzarella cheese , and add meat over the cheese if you wish according to your recipe. Always remember to add toppings sparingly when youre making pizza, or else your grilled pizza will be soggy and heavy.
Design Your Pizza Of Choice
While your pellet grills firing up, you should get fired up to top your pizza crust. Place the crust on your parchment paper and go hog wild.

Once your BBQ grill has reached about 400 degrees, use your pizza peel , and pick up your topped pizza and place it onto the pizza stone and close the lid. The trick here is to use enough cornmeal on the pizza peel to keep the dough from sticking, and to hold it an an angle and allowing the pizza to gently slide onto the pizza stone. You may want to have a friend handy with a spatula to give the pizza a nudge if it gets stuck. Once the pizza is centered as best you can on the stone close the grill’s lid. Can You Make Pizza On Grill With Premade Crust
November 2, 2020 by Shrey
We have repeatedly said on this blog that there are a lot of ways to cook pizza. So this pizza on a grill with a premade crust recipe will get you to cooking pizzas in a different way.
Pizza is a very versatile recipe where you can use what is available around you. It allows you to get the freshest ingredients and making it at home will be the best option for making pizzas.
You no longer need to deal with hassle orders where you spend time specifying your pizza toppings and the way it is cooked. You can do it yourself at the comforts of your home.
Cooking pizza in an oven is pretty common and while that is great, you can also buy a grill that you can use for many other recipes as well as cooking pizzas in it like no other.
Grills can produce the same amount of heat needed to cook pizzas perfectly. With pellet grills, you can even use the fuel to add more flavors to the pizza that you want to make.
Grills can create the perfect environment for making the pizza crispy and evenly cooked no matter what kind of toppings you use. So they are not the most common appliance but they do well.
Pizzas are great especially when they are made with the freshest ingredients. However, making pizzas with all fresh ingredients will take time especially in the preparation stage.
So some of us choose premade ingredients such as the crust itself. It is the most important part of the pizza as it is responsible for holding the other ingredients when cooking.

Using A Cast Iron Skillet
Im a pretty big fan of cast irons. I love the way they evenly disperse heat. They also are especially nice for cooking pizza on the grill, especially if youre into deep-dish Chicago-style pizza.
It might be hard to come across a cast iron big enough to accommodate your average frozen pizza, so you can also use a regular baking sheet or pan for similar results.
Instructions
Grill One Side Of The Pizza Dough
Once the grill is hot, dip a tightly folded paper towel into olive oil prepared beforehand in a small bowl. Hold it with tongs and gently wipe the grill plates with it. Let the pizza dough slide gently off the sheet onto the hot grill grates so it can get direct high heat. Alternatively, flip it onto the hot grill and brush the other side with olive oil, especially the crust. Shut the grill lid, reduce the high heat to medium, and let the pizza dough cook for about two minutes.

Check Readiness Of The Dough And Remove
After two minutes, check if there are golden brown grill marks underneath the dough. If the pizza crust is not brown underneath, cover the grill and cook for another minute or until the underneath of the dough turns brown.
If it is getting brown only on one side, rotate the dough 90 degrees with tongs or spatula, and cook for another minute to get an even grilled side and golden crust. This step should take only a few minutes if you had pre-heated the grill. By now, the top of the pizza crust should start to have air bubbles.

Grilled Pizza Topping Suggestions
When it comes to grilled pizzas, less is more. Grilled pizzas will never develop golden, bubbling cheese like you can achieve in a hot oven, and I recommend working with tender toppings since the pizza will not be in the grill for long.
Since were most likely to grill pizzas during the warmer months, here are some of my favorite grilled pizza toppings:
- Arugula or basil
- Bell peppers or better yet, roasted red peppers
- Cheese: Soft cheeses especially, like feta and goat cheese, as well as mozzarella and Parmesan
- Drizzle of thick balsamic vinegar or balsamic reduction
- Fresh figs
- Hot pepper rings, like jalapeños or pepperoncinis
- Pineapple

In addition to grilling foods, you can cook a pretty mean pizza on your gas BBQ grill, as well as using it to boil water and cook daily meals. Before we moved to the suburbs, my wife and I lived for several years on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest. Power outages from falling trees were very common there, yet even during those times we still enjoyed a variety of different pizzas cooked on our gas BBQ grill.

About Our Weber Grill
I got Tony the Weber Genesis II for his birthday earlier this year because our old grill went kaput and frankly, it was just way too small. I had heard great things about Weber from my sister-in-law and decided to give it a shot. After using it the past few months, we really appreciate how it has plenty of space for grilling and is also great for entertaining. With three burners and three separate temperature controls you can easily monitor temps and cook everything super evenly. The grill fits about 20 burgers, so its perfect for feeding a crowd! My personal favorite thing? Its easy to clean!
