Can You Grill Salmon Indoors

How to Cook Salmon on the Grill

If you dont have a grill, you can still cook a grill-like salmon indoors. Cook the salmon in a preheated cast-iron skillet to get a similar sear to what youll find on the grill. Or take advantage of your broiler. Its essentially a reverse grill, where the heating element is on top of the food instead of the bottom. After preheating the broiler to high, position the salmon four inches below the element. Then, cook it according to the recipe above, flipping it halfway through.

Tips On Buying And Using Salmon

  • Try to use your salmon the same day you buy it, if you can! It just tastes so much better.
  • Use fresh salmon if you can as well.
  • If you cant use your salmon within a day or two, I would recommend freezing your salmon. Freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
  • If using frozen salmon, allow to thaw overnight in the refrigerator before use.
  • I usually try and buy salmon that is not much more than 1 inch thick at its thickest point.

How Long Should Salmon Be Cooked On Each Side

The general rule of thumb is to cook salmon for six to eight minutes at 450-500 degrees F per inch thickness of salmon. If your salmon is one inch thick, you dont need to flip the sides. Just place the fillets on the cooking grates and remember the time mentioned above and the temperature guidelines.

If your salmon is two inches thick, you should flip the sides after six to eight minutes. Place the salmon skin-side down on the cooking grates and grill until golden brown for six to eight minutes. Now flip the salmon using a spatula and cook for another six to eight minutes. If you allow this much time for each side of the fish, it cooks to perfection and detaches easily from the grates.

A one-inch thick piece of salmon takes around six to eight minutes to cook at 500 degrees on a pellet smoker. The USDA says that the minimum internal temperature of the fish should be at least 145 °F before you consume it. Undercooked seafood has potential health hazards, so never take the risk.

    Types And Sources Of Salmon

Salmon is mainly a cold water fish that swims in the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans and the rivers that feed these oceans. Salmon swim in saltwater and return to freshwater to spawn. This rigorous lifestyle makes the flesh of salmon meaty and slightly oily. The salt and fresh water habitats give salmon a uniquely flavored flesh that has a slight sweetness to it.

The most common types of salmon that you will find in your market are Atlantic and Pacific salmon that include Coho, Sockeye, King, and Chinook. Each has a slight difference in flesh density and color. King salmon fillets are orange colored and have a softer flesh. Sockeye has a deeper red flesh that is denser.

You can find either wild-caught or farm-raised salmon. Wild- caught salmon is preferable, yet it is more expensive than farm-raised. Much of the salmon on the market today is sourced from farms.

There is much debate as to whether farmed salmon is dangerous to consume. Some farms feed the salmon processed pellets of low quality fish meal and plant based nutrients in alarmingly crowded conditions. On these farms the fish do not have room to swim freely. Their flesh may not develop the rich orange or red flesh we associate with salmon. Therefore, some harvesters and processors will add food coloring to the flesh before it goes to market.
