Change The Grease Drip Pan And Wipe Outside

There will probably be a lot of gunk inside the aluminum grease pan. Slide the drip pan holder out, discard the old pan, and insert a new one.

Weber aluminum drip pans are inexpensive and make cleaning easy.

When you are grilling, remember to regularly check the grease pan so it doesnt overflow.

TIP: If you put an empty aluminum drip pan in the grill, it might fly away when it gets windy. You can place a few small stones inside the pan to prevent this.

Finally, you can wipe the outside surfaces of the grill clean with a damp cloth and some dishwashing soap.

The whole process will take only about 20 minutes so do it often enough. Enjoy your grilling!

How To Clean A Grill Pan

How to Clean Your Gas Grill: easy tips to get ready for summer

While not exactly a part of a grill, a grill pan, or skillet, is still a resourceful and versatile cookware that everyone should have. Most of these pans have some sort of protective coating against food sticking, the most common of which are porcelain-enamel, ceramic, teflon, and oil. These coatings arent permanent, and eventually their effectiveness will wear off over time. And although their dishwasher-friendliness varies from model to model, these pans are relatively easy to hand wash with regular dish soap and all-purpose cleaners.

1. Gently scrub the surface with warm soapy water and a sponge. Normally, these pans come with their own cleaning kits and tools, but if thats not the case, you can easily find one online or use a chainmail scrubber instead.

In cases where stubborn stains persist, degreasers and other specific cleaning fluids may come in handy. But these solutions are highly concentrated, so you need to dilute it or mix with the right ratio instead of using liberally, or youll risk damaging the protective coating or discolor the pan.

2. Rinse with water several times to wash off any remaining residues.

3. Air-dry or dry with a dishtowel. Store away in a dry place.

Instead, try mixing baking soda and water to make a strong paste. It will break down grease and baked-on food with ease. If youre going to clean your whole grill, you might need a lot of paste. Heres what you need to do.

Reassemble Your Grill And Fire It Up

Now that the cleaning is complete, its time to reassemble your grill in the reverse order you took it apart, and if youre not too sure how or get stuck, resort back to your trusted manual or the photos you took.

Each part should slot in place easily, and most grills have ledges and groves that each part rests on. If it doesnt feel right, it probably isnt, so dont force it. Look at that manual.

Once youre happy all is together correctly, ignite all of the burners and run it on its highest heat for 10 to 15 minutes.

This will burn away any residue and water.

Once completed, turn the burners off.

How To Keep Rust From Coming Back

How to Clean a Gas Grill

After any good cleaning coat your grill surface with vegetable oil on both sides. The oil can keep moisture from attacking the metal. If you want to store your grill for long-term over the winter, put your grill grate inside a plastic bag. When youre ready to use the BBQ again, take them out of the bag and give them a good wipe down with paper towels. Youre then ready to fire-up the barbecue again and start cooking.

Since you dont have to put them in a bag all the time, always wipe the grill down before cooking on them. Vegetable oil also attracts little bugs, dust, and debris. Clean surfaces work better if they dont have any kind of build-up. The oil just helps you keep rust from ruining an afternoon BBQ.

Before You Start Cleaning Grill Grates

Determine whether your grill grates are made of porcelain, cast iron or stainless steel. How you clean your grill grates and what products you use depends on what material the grates are made of. Keep these tips in mind before you start scrubbing.

  • Porcelain grates: Porcelain grates are rust-resistant as long as the finish is intact. To clean, use a soft-bristled or nylon brush in lieu of rougher metal or wire brushes.

  • Cast-iron grates: Cast-iron is tough so they can handle those stiff, wire brushes. However, they do rust easily, so we recommend rubbing the grates down with either vegetable or canola oil after cleaning.

  • Stainless Steel grates: These grates are durable and dont require as much special care as porcelain or cast-iron grates. But, that doesnt mean they arent subject to rusting. To prevent rust, be sure to dry the grates completely before cleaning.

Soak The Grill Grates And Metal Pieces In Hot Water And Dish Soap Soak Them In Your Sink Or A Large Plastic Bin

At this point, youre probably hoping that you dont have to scrub the grill grates vigorously. Luckily, you dont. Just fill your sink with hot water and dish soap and let the grates soak. Some grill grates will be too big to fit in your sink. In that case, set your grill grates in a shallow plastic container with hot soapy water.

If you dont have a plastic bin handy, you can try the strategy we used to clean stove top grates. Learn more right here.

Cast Iron Grill Grates

If you ask me, these grates can be perfect for getting non-stick grilling if you are very careful. Heres why this happens and why so many people think cast iron is some magical metal. The surface has a very nice quality of holding cooking oil. Its iron, so the little imperfections in the metal will allow the oil to remain on the surface evenly. But when you add heat, this changes everything. That oil can burn-off and then you get fat and food sticking to the grate.

Youll have to clean these more often when the heat is getting too hot. Even though they hold up great for higher heat, they will need scrubbing and oiling after every use. They can be a headache over the other alternatives. If you want to keep it simple, dont invest in cast iron grates unless you are prepared to do more prepping to keep these grates well oiled and properly cleaned.

How To Clean Grill Burners

Now, remove the burner tubes and clean themthoroughly. They may be attached with a screw or cotter pin, depending on yourgrill. Removing burners can be quite complex with some grills. Old Weber Genesis grills had a complex system, where the electrodes were mounted to the first burner, and a crossover tubecarried the flame to the other two. Over time, corrosion would tend to freezethe screws attaching the crossover tube, preventing you from detaching it,which required an elaborate workaround to change the burner .The point of this digression is that burners are complicated, and vary a lotfrom model to model, and brand to brand. If you cant look at the burner andfigure out how it works before disassembling it or if parts are frozen inplace feel free to . Wed be happy to talk you through it.

Remove the igniter and wrap the wire endscarefully in foil to keep them free of debris. Be sure to note exactly how theigniter fits into the burner failing to reinstall your igniter assemblycorrectly is one of the surest ways to have your grill refuse to light.

Why Regular Cleaning Of A Gas Grill Is Important

Its best to clean the grill grates after each time you cook. This can be easily done with a metal wire brush.

You can also heat the grill very hot and burn off most of the food stuck on the grates. Brushing them clean will be easier after this.

But in addition to brushing the grates, you should also perform a more thorough cleaning every few months .

Here are a few good reasons to clean your gas grill regularly:

    • Safety: A dirty grill is a safety risk. The accumulated grease and food remains may catch fire .
    • Longevity: A clean grill will last longer as it doesnt rust so easily.
    • Even Heat: Dirty burner tubes can get clogged from some parts and dont produce even heat anymore.

    Clean The Flavorizer Bars

Most grills have some sort of cover over the gas burners, and these are often named Flavorizer Bars, or sometimes heat diffusers, or simply metal plates.

Before their invention, lava rocks were used instead, which were a nightmare to clean and prone to flare-ups.

Nowadays, the Flavorizer Bars spread the heat more evenly and direct drippings away from the burner tubes. This not only creates more even cooking, but it helps to prevent flare-ups and stops the burners from clogging, so its essential to keep these guys clean.

The Flavorizer Bars are the most chastised part of the grill, because not only do they take full whack of the heat, but they also collect all of the marinade and drippings so do tend to get and look a bit grim over time.

Again, theres no secret technique here, just make sure these guys are removed from the grill and then scrub both sides with a scourer and warm soapy water.

Simply Wash And Rinse With Soapy Water

How To Clean And Maintain A Weber Gas Grill

Its a good idea to start with fresh warm soapy water again. Otherwise, youll get grease smears all over the outside of your grill, and thats never a good look.

Using a sponge, gently scrub the exterior all over, particularly around the grooves and knobs where grime tends to stick.

If you have any stubborn bits of burnt food or grime, soak it with warm water and cleaning product a few times, 30 seconds or so apart to loosen it.

Do not use a scourer as this will scratch the paintwork or surface.

Once youve rubbed it down thoroughly, rinse it with clean water using your garden hose set to a low power setting, and thats it!
