How Long Does It Take To Grill Lobster Tails

    Grilled Lobster Tails

Depending on the size of the lobster tail, you want to grill the tail for a minute a pound. This would mean if you had 6-8 pound lobster you would grill for about 6-8 minutes. We recommend basting the lobster halfway through the cooking process to keep it nice and moist.

When the lobster tail is ready to serve, the shell will be a bright red color and the meat will be opaque. Another way to check if the lobster is completely cooked is by using a meat thermometer to see if the internal temperature is 140.

You always want to go on the doneness of the lobster tail rather than the time. This is a good way to not overcook your tail. For more tips see our in-depth lobster grilling guide.

Fresh Lobster Tails Versus Frozen Lobster Tails

Unfortunately, we donât all have access to fresh lobster at a momentâs notice. If itâs available, fresh lobster tails are always the way to go. They taste better and are healthier for you. However, frozen lobster tails can be just as good.

If you choose to go with frozen lobster tails, make sure you thaw them before putting them on the grill. Just like cooking lobster tails, thereâs different methods to thawing lobster tails as well. You can thaw them overnight in the refrigerator or put them in a bowl of cool water if you need them to thaw faster. Do not put them under hot water or in the microwave, no matter how tempting it might be.

Grilled Lobster Tails And Classic Lobster Rolls Recipe

This was my first attempt at grilling lobster on a George Foreman Grill. I was hesitant because I thought the method might dry the lobster out. Lobster is awesome when it is steamed or boiled. Despite my trepidation, I was able to figure out a good method for grilling that kept the meat moist and tasty.

I used only the tails for this recipe. I was able to keep them moist by grilling in the shell and adding some fat to the flesh, which I will describe in detail below. I served this with grilled zucchini rounds and fresh avocado slices with a tiny bit of sea salt, cracked pepper, and a squeeze of lemon. Next time I will make a couple of lobster rolls with the tail meat. I have included a recipe for the rolls below.

Keep in mind that lobster is naturally high in sodium. When you steam or boil lobster the salinity is decreased. When grilled, the lobster will retain some salty flavor. My advice is not to heavily season lobster when grilling it. It is delicious as is.

Lobster tails are best eaten fresh off the grill. However, you can store them for up to a day before they begin to turn.

    • Storing: To keep your tails as fresh as possible, store them in an airtight container in the fridge.
    • Reheating: To reheat, place the lobster tails in the oven until warmed through, basting them every 45 seconds with melted garlic butter to prevent them from drying out.

    How To Broil Lobster Tails

Be careful when broiling lobster tails. This cooking method is a little trickier than other methods since the high heat of the broiler can dry out your tails in no time. Another option is to bake tails and finish them in the broiler for just a couple minutes to get a golden brown finish.

  • Preheat the broiler while preparing the tails.
  • Split or piggyback tails and place on a cookie sheet or broiler pan with the shell side down.
  • Brush meat with butter or olive oil, salt, and pepper or your favorite marinade. You will want to keep a baste around to add during the cooking process.
  • Broil 4-5 inches from heat for a little less than a minute per ounce . Baste tails halfway through cooking. If your broiling large tails, broil farther away from the heat source by lowering the oven rack. Keep an eye on them!
  • For an additional touch, garnish with Ritz crackers and add parsley and a dash of paprika for color.

    Clawed Vs Clawless Lobsters

While there are lots of different kinds of lobster out there, the crustaceans fall into two main categories: clawed lobsters and those without claws. The most common and popular clawed lobster is the Maine lobster, which comes from the cold waters off the northern Atlantic coast. It has two distinctive meaty front claws and four more pairs of legs, and it is whats most often depicted when you see pictures of whole steamed lobsters. Lobsters without claws, known as spiny or rock lobsters, have five sets of legs that are all the same size and often live in warmer waters, like those the Caribbean and off the coast of Florida. All of the edible meat in spiny lobsters is in the tail.

    Buying Cooked Lobster Meat

A good seafood market often carries cooked lobster meat, or you can order it online . When you’re buying cooked lobster meat, be sure to specify whether you want lobster tail meat only, or a combination of tail, claw, and knuckle meat. You can store cooked lobster meat in the fridge for up to 3 days, but do try to eat it up right away for the freshest flavor.

How To Choose Lobster To Grill

    Grilled Lobster Tails

If you’re grilling a whole lobster, you must buy it alive. That’s because lobster meat begins to degrade quickly as soon as they die.

The size of the lobster is also important. Buy lobsters that are at least 1½ pounds smaller ones cook too quickly on the grill. That same size is also a good guideline for how much lobster to serve per person.

Your local seafood market will sell you the lobster in a special storage bag. Once you get them home, they will stay alive in the fridge for as long as 24 hours.

How Can You Tell If Lobster Is Cooked

Cooked lobster is slightly firm to the touch and nontransparent. The meat will be white and can be easily separated by two forks.

If the meat is soft to the touch or still transparent, it needs more time on the grill.

Lobsters turn red when you cook them, but the pigment itself does not tell you whether the meat is perfectly cooked.

Is Lobster A Healthy Seafood Choice

While I really enjoy lobster, I have often wondered if this bottom feeder is a clean and healthy seafood option. I did a little research to find out.

One lobster tail has less than 1 gram of fat and close to 20 grams of protein. Lobster is a rich source of zinc that we all need for blood clotting and immune system support. It is also a great source of selenium, a mineral that is necessary yet hard to get enough of. Selenium supports thyroid function and protects cells from damaging free radicals.

The tomalley of the lobster is basically the liver. This is the green, mushy stuff you see when you remove the back area shell. This is pretty tasty. However, since it is the lobsters main filtering system, it may be better to simply toss that aside as it may contain minute amounts of toxins.

    Is Grilling Better Than Steaming

Personally, I like grilled lobster better than steamed lobster. In terms of ease, theres no difference between the two processes.

One of the proclaimed benefits of steaming a lobster is that its difficult to overcook it that way, but it can also introduce too much water to the meat. When you grill the lobster, its still quick and easy, and all of the flavors of the meat just shine. Plus the texture comes out perfect every time!

    • Lobster tails are done when the shell turns red and the flesh is opaque. Its important not to overcook your lobster, so use both the visual cues and the suggested cook times.
    • I recommend serving lobster immediately after it comes off the grill. Lobster can get tough when reheated.
    • You can use a charcoal grill, gas grill or an indoor grill pan on the stove top for this recipe.
    • Serve your lobster with lemon wedges and fresh parsley for garnish.

How Long To Grill Lobster Tails

Grilled lobster tails cook for 5-6 minutes flesh side down, followed by 1-6 minutes flesh side up, depending on the size.

TIP: A good rule of thumb for lobster tail grill time is about 60-75 seconds total time per ounce of individual tail. For example, if your lobster tails are 8 ounces each, youll grill them for 480-600 seconds total, which is 8-10 minutes. Out of that total time, 5-6 minutes would be flesh side down and the remaining time would be after flipping.

Prepare The Tail Of The Lobster

After completely thawing the tail of the lobster, you place it on the cutting board so that the abdomen is facing down, the back has the shell curled upwards. Use specialized kitchen scissors or a knife to cut along the curved back of the tail down to the end of the tail. Remember to leave the bottom part of the lobster belly intact so that the two halves of the tail are still stuck together. Separate the newly cut back so that the two parts have a hinge in the middle.
