Best Way To Cook Shrimp On Pellet Grill

How To Buy Shrimp From The Grocery Store

How to Grill Shrimp using a pellet grill

You know me, I love my ingredients fresh. So, I go straight to the butcher every time I can. However, its completely different with seafood, especially with shrimp since its very delicate.

Here are some things I learned that you might want to know when buying shrimp.

  • Fresh or Frozen Id go for frozen for this one. Seafood goes bad easily if you dont store it properly. Fishing boats often immediately freeze shrimps to preserve the quality.
  • Smell it Steer clear from shrimps that smell like ammonia. Its a clear sign that it spoiled.
  • Touch it If the shell feels soft or slimy, its probably better off in the garbage bin than the grocery store.
  • Look at the label Personally, I prefer wild-caught shrimp since they taste better. You can also get them pre-packaged. Companies will advertise this. Farm-raised shrimps are also good, but be sure to ensure the farming practices are sustainable.

    Can I Freeze Smoked Shrimp

Shrimp will freeze, and while I advocate for eating this dish fresh, if you do freeze it, pack it with lots of sauce to protect the shrimp from the freezer. Freeze the thoroughly chilled shrimp in a plastic bag or container for up to 3 months, and let them thaw gently in the fridge.

To reheat, Id pop them in a low oven just to bring them up to temperature. Dont overcook them!

First, you need to decide whether you are going to season your shrimp right before sticking it on your pellet grill or whether you want to marinate it beforehand.

If you choose to marinate your shrimp, you will want to do this for at least 30 minutes, but it is best if you can let it sit in the marinade, in your refrigerator, for up to 8 hours. This will give more time for the flavors to actually permeate into the shrimp.

Be aware that if there is citrus in your marinade, i.e. lemon or lime juice, you should be sure that you cook your shrimp within 2 hours as the citric acid will start to break down the proteins in the shrimp, making it mushy. Definitely not what you want!

Again, if youre not sure what youll like, start with the grilled shrimp recipe at the end of this guide.

As for the actual grilling, grilling shrimp on a pellet grill is super simple:

  • Pre-heat your pellet grill to 350F.
  • Coat your shrimp with your choice of seasoning or get your pre-marinated shrimp out of the refrigerator and thread it onto skewers if you are choosing to do so.
  • Place your shrimp directly onto the grill individually or on skewers.
  • Let the shrimp cook for 2 3 minutes.
  • Turn the shrimp over and let them cook for a further 2 3 minutes.
  • As long as they are opaque and pink, it is time to remove your perfectly grilled shrimp and serve!

Types Of Wood To Smoke Seafood

The type of wood used in the smoking of seafood is just as important as the temperature. Hickory and pecan are excellent options because they produce a lot of flavor in a short period of time. The temperature of the shrimp will ensure that they cook through and are completely done after being smoked. Seafood that has been smoked can be eaten three months after it has been refrigerated properly.

How To Smoke Or Grill Shrimp

When smoking or grilling shrimp, you should give them plenty of time to cook, regardless of whether theyre done smoking or grilling. The best way to smoke is to use a strong wood, such as hickory or pecans, and the best way to grill is to cook them over direct, medium heat for 5-7 minutes, turning halfway through the process. When cooking the shrimp, they should turn pink on the outside while they are still warm, and white and opaque on the inside. If they become too tough, be careful not to overcook them.

    Prepare The Shrimp For Smoking

I was working with two pounds of 16-20 size frozen shrimp from Costco, peeled and deveined, tail on.

The shrimp were thawed under cold running water then added to a 10×12 inch disposable foil pan. You could use your wifes favorite baking dish if you like but she will probably smack you upside the head for getting it dirty in your smoker.

I went ahead and tossed in the lemon quarters that I juiced as well as the half of the jalapeno that I didnt slice up for the sauce. I figured they could still add some flavor and made for a more interesting picture!

The shrimp did not all fit in a single layer and were a little crowded in the pan. I wasnt really worried about that as I had already planned to give these a stir every now and then while they were smoking.

Add the basting sauce to the shrimp and mix well to coat.

What Equipment Will I Need For Grilling Shrimp

One of the great things about grilling shrimp is that you need minimal equipment and just a small number of ingredients to get perfectly cooked, tasty shrimp.

The most important piece of equipment to create BBQ shrimp is obviously the grill!

    Recommended Grills

With a Z Grills pellet grill, you can be sure that your shrimp will cook at the perfect temperature from start to finish for the best grilled shrimp every time.

If you are just looking to get started in the world of grilling, our 5502H wood pellet grill will be perfect for you. With 8-in-1 cooking and easily stored, this pellet grill is affordable and a great starter grill.

If you are more experienced with a grill but have only ever used charcoal or gas, you will find that a grill like the Master 700E Pellet Grill is a change you wont regret.

We have a huge range of pellet grills available to choose from, so no matter your skillset, you are sure to find the right grill to suit you.

    Other Equipment

You do have the option of putting your shrimp onto skewers before putting them onto the grill, but other than that, there really is nothing else!

If you are going to use skewers and you opt for wooden skewers, make sure that you take the time to soak them beforehand otherwise the wood will burn.

If youre cooking them loose, youll need a pair of tongs and if theyre relatively small shrimp you think may fall through your grates, a grilling mat will keep them in place.

How Do You Start A Pit Boss Grill

To start your Pit Boss grill, open the lid of your grill, and turn it to the smoke setting for 10 minutes before closing the lid and changing the temperature to your preferred setting.

Initially starting with the smoke setting on makes sure that the firepot isnt overwhelmed with pellets.

The same can also be said for leaving the lid open. It stops the barrel from being overloaded with smoke and prevents any backdrifts.

Once the grill is hot enough, you can then add food to the grill.

A lot of Pit Boss Grills have a Prime Button, and if your grill is new or youre all out of pellets you will need to prime the grill before pellets can be added.

This igniter will initially remain hot for 5 minutes before turning off, although it normally takes longer than five minutes for the pellets to reach the firepot.

Pressing and holding the prime button will keep the auger working continuously, which helps the pellets move faster. However, pressing and holding the Prime button does not affect the speed of the auger.

But even when you prime your grill, it will probably still need to be turned off and back on again to restart the igniter once the pellets arrive at the fire pot.

Smoke The Shrimp At 225f On Your Pellet Grill

Smoked Shrimp | Barbecue Shrimp Smoked on Traeger Pellet Grill

Set your pellet grill to 225F. I was cooking on my Z Grills pellet grill but this recipe works great on a Traeger, Pit Boss, etc. I decided to cook the shrimp at 225F to give them a little time to soak up some smoke flavor as this is a fast smoker recipe.

I was burning hickory pellets but I do not believe the choice of wood is particularly critical.

Place the sauced shrimp onto your pellet grill and start cooking!

I checked on the shrimp about every 20 minutes and gave them a stir to make sure they all got plenty of time to simmer in the butter sauce and soak up the smoke.

It took about one hour and fifteen minutes for the shrimp to finish cooking and they smelled absolutely amazing.

Tips For Making The Best Smoked Shrimp

    • Peel. Always peel the shell off before smoking. It would take less time to infuse the Smokey flavour into your shrimp.
    • Skip The Skewers. Instead of using skewers, try smoking your shrimp in a grill basket. The basket is so much easier to just throw the shrimp into and add to the grill. It might not look as great on shrimp on a skewer, but the flavour will outweigh the aesthetics!

How Do You Grill Shrimp Without Drying It Out

Crate & Barrel Shrimp Grill Pan

If youre worried about drying out your shrimp on the grill, we recommend marinating your shrimp and then grilling them with their shells. We also suggest grilling your shrimp at a more modest temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 to 3 minutes per side rather than flash-grilling over higher heat. When you flash-grill shrimp over high heat, more liquid evaporates which could cause dry shrimp.
