This gas BBQ can be removed from the stand, making it portable for tabletop use, and the servery drops down for more easy transportation.

Other things we love include the enamel-coated grates and hood that can be cleaned easily and are rust-proof. Although it has a large cooking area it is powered by only two burners, which is less than some of the other BBQs in our guide. Plus unlike other models, this kamado comes with a wheeled stand and has side tables for resting your basting sauce and a cold one. When its time to clean up, all you have to do is slide out the ash drawer and dispose of the ashes. Safely of course.

Unlike on a kettle-style grill, this model has side tables to hold your tongs and trays and platters. Youll also find a thermometer in the lid to give you a rough idea as to how hot it is under the grill, a warming rack thats helpful for heating buns, and an easy to remove ash tray. A: Use the vents and the lid. Its about oxygens effect on fire if youve got good hot coals going, more air will make them hotter. You need that to properly sear a steak, etc.

But to cook slower, youll need to cool the coals down. So put the lid on it. And if you really want to cut it down, close the vent.

How We Picked The Best Gas Grill

We had three firm criteria that our main contenders had to meet:

Finally, we restricted our search to grills that burn propane from refillable tanks, the most common fuel by far, but you should note that most grills can also run on natural gasthough converting to natural gas isnt cheap or simple.1

We didnt fret much over two other factors that grill-makers spend a lot of time talking about: total Btu count and the grates material. First, the total Btu count on three-burner grills tends to vary between 30,000 and 40,000, and the industry is making a strong push toward more is better. But our research and reporting convinced us that at least as important as the total output was whether those Btus were applied efficiently, steadily, and evenly across the grates. We decided to reserve judgment until our tests.

We knew we would be looking at intangibles, too, such as how well the grills were packed, if the instructions were clear, and if assembly was reasonably straightforward. And, of course, we would consider the biggest intangible of all: the grills ability to perform in our tests.

But those judgments would have to wait until we got our hands on the contenders. So after weeks of research, reporting, and discussion, we settled on four gas grills to test in our main $400 to $700 category, and two grills around the $200 mark to test as budget options.

What To Know About Gas Grills

Almost as easy to light as your indoor range, gas grills are super convenient to use, making them great for after work grilling, even in the winter months. They only take about 10 minutes to preheat and you control the heat with the turn of a knob to produce a steak thats crusty on the outside and rare on the inside or chicken quarters burnished to a golden brown yet thoroughly cooked. Gas grill maintenance is minimal. After cooking, the grates need a quick once-over with a brush and the drip pan has to be emptied.

The one thing you do have to do is make sure you have a tank of liquid propane gas hooked up to the grill and check it after cooking so if the gas is running low, you can replace it before your next cookout. If your kitchen range is fueled by a propane tank in your backyard, you can have your grill connected to it, to give you a constant supply of gas. Another option to consider is a model that can that can access the natural gas line to your home.

    Stainless Steel Grill Grates

Stainless steel grates are the most affordable option available. They tend to be lightweight, which makes them easy to move which is helpful if you need to access the coals underneath.

The low weight also means a stainless steel grills heat up quickly. However, because they tend to be thinner they dont retain heat very well

Proper stainless steel is highly corrosion resistant, but not 100% corrosion proof. Over time, the heat of the coals and regular cleaning will degrade the surface of your grill grate.

This creates a rough surface that is prone to corrosion and can make food stick.

    Pros

    • Cooking surface degrades over time
    • Wear and tear can cause food to stick
    • Low heat retention

    When To Replace Your Grill

Pellet Grill vs Gas Grill vs Kamado Grill – Best BBQ Buying Guide

Most grills come with two different kinds of warranty. One for labor, which can range anywhere from zero coverage to two years, and another much longer warranty for parts. That coverage often lasts for the entire lifetime of the product, and includes all the essential pieces like burner, cooking grids, and exterior housing. But how long your grill lasts also depends on how well you take care of it.

If the cost of repairs are more than 50 percent of the price of a new grill, its time to consider buying a replacement. Rust or cracks in the firebox are an indication that your grill is not worth keeping. If you find cracks in the gas hose and regulator then you will have a gas leak, so you should at least replace those parts, if not the entire grill.
