How Long To Grill Salmon In Foil:

Salmon is considered fully cooked by the FDA when it reaches 145 degrees Fahrenheit. Generally, salmon on the grill in foil takes about 10 to 15 minutes to cook. The best way of ensuring your salmon is fully cooked is using a meat thermometer. Insert the thermometer in the center of the thickest part of the salmon to get an accurate read.

Do note that the salmon will continue cooking after it is removed from the grill. Allow it to rest for 10 minutes before serving for best results!

Using Foil On Your Grill

Aluminum foil can foil a good time

Theres an outdated practice that promoted cleaning cooking grates by laying aluminum foil on the grates, turning the grill to high, and letting it run for a while. This is a major NO-NO. Laying the foil on the grates can restrict the intended air flow inside the grill, which could lead to damage of the internal components, not to mention create a dangerous situation.

Also, on the topic of aluminum foil, is the practice of lining the slide out bottom tray with aluminum foil. This is usually done as a time saving method for cleaning, so one does not have to manually clean the bottom tray, rather, they can just pull out the foil and line it with new foil, as needed.

The problem with this is that the bottom tray on our grills is specifically designed to maximize the flow of grease to the catch pan. If youve ever lined something with foil youll probably remember that doing so creates all sorts of ridges and creases in the foil, as few people could be bothered to sit there and smooth out each ridge and crease.

Those ridges and creases all create barriers to the proper flow of grease to the catch pan, which sets the stage for lots of it to build up on the bottom tray, which in turn, builds the potential for grease fires and flare ups.

Be The Grill Master You Want To Be

Who doesnt love a good barbecue? Grilling is a big part of American celebrations. The challenge is getting that food build-up off those grates. Its something you should do before you put those grills away. Scrubbing it with brushes could work. But its time-consuming and some gunk is difficult to remove.

Those burnt food bits have nothing on aluminum foil. Make a ball out of this shiny foil. Pour water over the grill grates. Begin scrubbing once the grates are wet. Any stuck food will slough off like butter. Rinse and repeat until all the charred bits are gone.

This hack also works on frying pans and pots. Sprinkle baking soda or a bit of salt on the pans bottom. Get a ball of foil. Dampen it like a sponge and start scrubbing away. It can cut away the grease and remove burnt food bits.

Can I Line My Grill With Foil

Do you enjoy grilling? I sure do. I was cooking steaks the other day and realized my gas grill was getting quite dirty. I wondered: can I line my grill with foil? It may make cleanup easier. It turns out thats not a good option.

Do not line the bottom of your charcoal or gas grill with aluminum foil. While it might make cleanup easier, it can accelerate grease buildup. This increases the risk of a grease fire.

Dont line the grill grates with foil either. It restricts the airflow in the grill which can be a fire hazard. Lining your grill grates with aluminum foil doesnt allow the juices and fat to drain naturally. They will pool up inside the foil. Cooking meats in excess juices and fats is not healthy.

You can wrap smaller foods like potatoes and vegetables in aluminum foil to grill them. Cooking with foil will make your job easier in the kitchen because you can keep an eye on multiple dishes right from your grill. You dont have to use your oven or indoor range. But a cheaper environmentally friendly alternative is to use a cast iron skillet on the grill.

Depending on what youre cooking, foil can be difficult to unwrap. Make sure there are no bits of foil in your food before eating. Use tongs to remove wrapped food from the grill as it will be extremely hot. Aluminum foil ignites at 1220º F. so you dont have to worry about it burning inside your grill.

If in doubt, refer to the manufacturers instructions before lining your grill with foil.

-Check the internal temperature of the fish: In order to determine whether or not grill salmon is done, check the internal temperature of the fish. The higher the temperature, the more cooked and tender the fish will be.

-Watch for browned areas on top of the fish: Once the internal temperature reaches about 145 degrees Fahrenheit, start to see browned areas on top of your fish. This means that it has been cooked through and is ready to serve.

How Do I Keep It Clean

Another easy trick, actually! Although you could continue using aluminum foil to clean off your grill, you can avoid the number of cleaning sessions by simply applying cooking oil to the grates. Just like a cast iron skillet, cooking oil will help keep the grill clean of excess food.

First, you need to wait for your grill to completely cool after cleaning it. Once it is cool, coat the grill with a high heat cooking oil like canola or peanut oil. Using a spray oil would make the process easy, just make sure you arent spraying it at an open flame.

Once the oil is on the grill, use a paper towel to even the coat of oil on the grates. Then light the grill back up for about 30 minutes in order to settle the oil into the grates.

Before You Start Cleaning Grill Grates

Determine whether your grill grates are made of porcelain, cast iron or stainless steel. How you clean your grill grates and what products you use depends on what material the grates are made of. Keep these tips in mind before you start scrubbing.

  • Porcelain grates: Porcelain grates are rust-resistant as long as the finish is intact. To clean, use a soft-bristled or nylon brush in lieu of rougher metal or wire brushes.

  • Cast-iron grates: Cast-iron is tough so they can handle those stiff, wire brushes. However, they do rust easily, so we recommend rubbing the grates down with either vegetable or canola oil after cleaning.

  • Stainless Steel grates: These grates are durable and dont require as much special care as porcelain or cast-iron grates. But, that doesnt mean they arent subject to rusting. To prevent rust, be sure to dry the grates completely before cleaning.

Make Sure The Grill Is Properly Stored

For maintaining and keeping a grill clean, not enough can be said about proper storage. If you can keep the grill somewhere indoors, like in a garage, that is the ideal way to go. If this not an option, the best thing that you can do is purchase a grill cover to protect it from the elements. The weather will really take its toll on a grill and it will also mean that the unit will require additional cleaning when you need to use it. A grill cover is relatively inexpensive, it will save you effort on cleaning, and it will help to ensure that you get a lot of use out of the unit.

How To Clean Grill Grates

Cleaning

Cleaning your grill grates will help reduce rust buildup and ensure tasty food when you grill. You want to scrape your grates after each use, but you should also do a deep cleanse at least once a year. Cleaning doesnt have to be a chore, but depending on what type of grill grates youre using you want to be careful how you clean them.

Porcelain grill grates hold heat well and are rust-resistant, but you want to keep them cleaned and cared for. Any chips or scrapes in the porcelain will expose the metal underneath and allow water to seep in, which can create rust. So when cooking with metal tools be careful not to scrape or nick the grates. When cleaning porcelain grill grates, dont use metal or wire brushes. Use a soft bristle or a nylon grill brush. Burn off any food leftover on the grates. Then let the grates cool and scrub them with the nylon cleaning brush.

Cast iron grill grates are very durable, tolerate high temperatures and create an even cooking surface. They are tough and can withstand just about anything except water iron is prone to rusting. When cleaning cast iron grates, burn off any food left over on the grates. Then let the grates cool and scrub them with the nylon cleaning brush. After cleaning the grates, dry and saturate the grates with vegetable oil to prevent rust from forming.

Can You Burn Grease Off Grill

Removal of the grates from the grill when they have cooled down. Add 2 cups of vinegar and 1 cup of baking soda to a trash bag and toss well. Leave it closed for at least 8 hours or overnight to allow the solution to soak. Then, using a ball of aluminum foil or a scrubby sponge, scrub away any leftover food particles from the grates.

Deep Cleaning And Maintenance

After youve cooked the last burger of the season, thoroughly clean your grill before storing it for the winter. Remove the grates, burner hoods, and grease pan, and scrub them with hot, soapy water and a plastic scour pad. Do the same inside the firebox and lid. Thoroughly rinse and dry all parts before reassembling. Also, remove the battery from the igniter before storing your grill long-term so it doesnt corrode.

Even if you follow the strictest cleaning and maintenance schedule, you will have to replace some parts on your grill as it ages. The burner hoods and cooking grates in particular take a lot of abuse and arent meant to last forever. My dad replaced these parts on his 17-year-old Weber Genesis four to five times over the years.

Use Aluminum Foil For Smoking

You can also use aluminum foil to smoke meats on a charcoal or gas grill. You dont want to wrap the meat itself, because the smoke will not fully penetrate it. You wont get as much of the authentic smoky flavor that everyone loves.

But you can make a foil pouch for wood chips if you dont have a smoker box. You just put a handful or two of wood chips in the pouch and set it next to your meats to smoke them. Smoke starts to form after about 10 to 15 minutes at about 225º to 250º F.

When putting wood chips in aluminum foil, you dont need to soak them. The foil protects the wood chips from burning quickly. Poke one hole in the box to let the smoke escape into your grill. Too many holes may cause the wood chips to burn and catch on fire. One pouch typically produces smoke for between 30 minutes to one hour, depending on its size.

Similarly, if you have a smoker box you dont need to wrap your wood chips or pellets in aluminum foil. Check the instructions on your wood chips to verify if they need to be soaked. Typically in smoker boxes and aluminum foil, wood chips are well protected from burning. So you dont need to soak them at all.

If you want to put your wood chips directly on the grill, soaking may be a good option to keep their temperature in check. Consult the manufacturers instructions to determine if you need to soak them.

Heres a quick video on how to make a foil smoker pouch for your wood chips.
