How to Clean a Gas Grill | The Home Depot

The easiest and most efficient way to clean the BBQ grills is to do it while the grates are still hot after usage.

Step 1: Leave the BBQ on max heat for 15 minutes after you finish using it. This will carbonize grime and food debris.

Step 2: Wait for the BBQ to cool down and scrub the grates with a metal spatula. Angle the brush in every direction to make sure you reach every angle.

Step 3: Once in a couple of uses, you can deep clean the BBQ grills using hot soapy water. Remove the BBQ grates and place them in a container filled with hot water and soap. You can add oven detergent instead of soap if you prefer it. Leave the grill to soak overnight. On the next day, scrub them with a sponge and rinse and dry them afterwards.

Stainless steel grates are protected from corrosion but can also easily become discoloured and damaged. However, they are relatively easy to clean.

The best way to clean this type of grate is to do so after every BBQ use while the grill is still hot. Use a mixture of soap and water and a soft cloth or a brass grill brush to remove the built-up debris from the grate.

Clean Cast Iron Grill Grates Without Removing From The Grill

Cast iron grill grates are durable and heat evenly but can be prone to rusting. If you open your grill to see rusty cast iron grates, dont despair. Reach for the baking soda, even if your cast iron grates dont easily come out of your grill.

  • Make a paste of 1 ½ cups ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda, ¼ cup dish soap, and ¼ cup white vinegar in a small bowl. It should be a frothy liquid consistency that sticks to the grill grates.
  • Using a brush, paint the grill grates with the paste, avoiding the heating elements if this is a gas grill. Close the grill. Note: do not turn the grill on.
  • Let the paste sit for 8-12 hours or overnight.
  • Use a nylon-bristled brush or scourer sponge to remove the loosened debris and grime.
  • Use a damp sponge and warm water to wipe away any remaining residue.

Once all the rust is removed, thoroughly dry the grates and rub them with a generous amount of vegetable oil to coat them and protect from moisture. You can also turn the grill on high after coating with oil to help lock in the seasoning and be ready for your next BBQ.

Common Grill Parts That Are Cleaned After Every Use

Grill exterior

Grill exterior is one of the first things that anyone sees in a grill. Therefore, you must ensure that the grill is carefully cleaned with the help of soapy water after every barbeque. The more you delay the cleaning process, the more residue will accumulate and be difficult to remove. If the residue persists, then use a grill cleaner. However, avoid using it on the inside, as it will cause damage to the interior walls of the grill.

Grates and Racks

Cleaning the grill will seem to be much easier if it is done after each use of the grill. This is especially critical with gas grills since the high temperatures can bake on grease and foods, making it extremely difficult to clean the grates and racks once they cool and the grease hardens. Therefore, make sure to clean both these parts after every use.

Steam Clean Your Grill Grates

How to Clean a Barbecue Grill

For a grill grate cleaning method that requires little effort, steam cleaning is an excellent option. Turn the grill heat up to 600°F, and then turn the burners off. Fill a large empty vegetable or soup can with water and place it on the grill grates.

Close the hood, and the water and heat will create steam that loosens the stuck-on food pieces from your grates. After 30 minutes, raise the hood and use a sponge to wipe off the remaining debris.

When Is The Best Time To Clean Your Grates

“When is the best time to clean the grates? How do I clean the grates?” We get asked these questions a lot and I am here to tell you the incredibly simple answer.

Before I started at Weber, it was a production to get the grill ready for actual grilling. The production included taking the grates to either to the sink in the basement or to the hose outside and washing them with water, scrubbing them and then patting them dry. After starting at Weber I quickly learned that there is a better and EASIER way!

Here is what you do:

You will want to preheat your grill on high for 10-15 min BEFORE you grill.

Here are my grates before the preheat. As you can see the last meal I grilled, French toast, is still on the grates and that is okay!

Once the grill has preheated, you will see that your grates are already a lot cleaner because the food has cooked off.

Now you will want to brush your grates clean by using your Weber stainless steel brush. We always recommend inspecting your brush on a regular basis. I replace mine every few months because I do a lot of grilling.

You are now ready to grill and the effort to clean your grates was minimal.

How To Wash Grill Grates After Each Use

Cooking on the grill is a great way to enjoy a summer meal unless your grill grates are caked with burnt-on food and grease. Not only does the residue ruin the flavor and possibly the safety of your food, it also can produce heavy smoke if it’s left to build up on the grates instead of be promptly cleaned. A quick cleaning after every use keeps the grates clean and saves you work down the road.

Turn gas grills onto the high setting once you are done cooking. Close the lid on the grill and let it run on high for 10 minutes to burn off most food residue.

Close the lid on charcoal grills after you are done cooking but before you spread the coals to cool. Allow the residual heat from the coals to heat the grates for 15 to 20 minutes.

Scrub the hot grates with a brass-bristle brush. Use a long-handled grill brush to avoid contact with the hot grates. Loosen all food residue on the grates with the brush. Allow the grates to cool.

Wipe down the cooled grates with water and a rag. For greasy buildup, combine equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle. The vinegar cuts through any grease.

Deep clean the grates once a year, or twice a year if you use your grill year-round. Remove the grates from the grill, spray them with oven cleaner and let them soak for 30 minutes to one hour. Scrub the grates thoroughly and rinse clean.

Technique # 1 The Burn Brush And Rinse

How to Clean Your Grill Grates | Char-Broil

No! Dont set your grill on fire. You simply wrap the grates with heavy-duty aluminum foil, close the lid and crank up your grill to a high heat temperature for approximately 15 minutes.

The food and grease sticking on your grate will be burnt off and become brittle. Use a quality scraper or grill brush to remove the remaining carbon.

Then you can hose off any remaining debris and residue. Now, youre ready for the next barbecue.

You may see a similar technique online where you put the grates in your home oven to burn them by setting the oven to the cleaning mode. Bad idea. The smoke can set off your smoke alarm, smoke is never good in a house, and there is the distinct possibility of a grease fire in your oven.

Besides ruining a perfectly good oven, do you really want to hear about it from your spouse?

Clean The Heat Deflectors

Many gas grills have thin steel plates, angled in the shape of a “V,” that separate the burners from the cooking chamber. These heat deflectors serve to distribute heat evenly around the cooking chamber and prevent the gas flames from burning the foods directly overhead. Grease and food residue often drips down onto these deflectors.

Clean the deflectors after every three of four uses of the grill by removing them from the cooking chamber and scrubbing them with warm soapy water and a nylon brush or scrubbing pad. Dry them completely before putting them back in the grill.

Cast iron grill grates are durable, withstand high temperatures, and make an even cooking surface. But they cant withstand water as iron is prone to rust.
