Cleaning The Removable Parts Of The Oven

Life Hacks #8 REALLY easy how to clean a grill or oven rack to perfection! No effort needed!

Now the removable parts. Those are parts number 1 thru 4 on the sink. Thats the sink in the service area behind the house. The kitchen sink is too small for them.

While the oven walls were air drying, I sponged parts 1 thru 4 with soapy water, I scrubbed the parts of the grill where I found burnt grease, I repeated the soaping then rinsed them thoroughly with a garden hose. No kidding. Speedy taught me to use the garden hose in the service kitchen. More efficient for rinsing.

How Do You Use The Self

Guys, in most cases, technology is going to make your life easy and your oven clean. But before you hit the button to activate the self-cleaning feature on your oven, check the schedule and the weather. Did you promise to make cookies for an event later in the day and is it hot outside? That may sound like a crazy combo of questions, but hang on. The self cleaning process takes about three hoursthe oven actually locks!which means any cookie dreams you may have are going to need to be put on hold. And the temperature during the process can get up to almost 900 degrees Fahrenheit. For three hours! So if your air-conditioning is already on overdrive, you may want to put off this task. The good news is that, at that temp, the aforementioned abandoned tater tots will literally disintegrate.

You should also do a little research before activation. Some ovens require that you remove the racks and everything else before moving forward. And resist the urge to add any cleaner to get things a little more sparklythey can actually damage your oven.

Wait until your oven has cooled to room temperature before wiping it down, and, if your oven is extra gross, you may have to activate the self-cleaning feature a few times.

Oven Rack Cleaning Method: Dishwasher Detergent

  • Total time: Overnight
  • Rating: 3

The method:Lay an old towel in the bottom of a bathtub, place the oven rack on top, then dissolve about a 1/2 cup of liquid or powder dishwasher detergent in a warm bath. Let the oven rack soak overnight, then rinse clean with a scrubby sponge and clean water.

How it went: This method is basically exactly the same as the first one, only it doesnt call for dryer sheets, so I was very interested to see how it would go. The soaking part worked just as well, but the scrubby sponge was definitely better at removing baked-on food from the racks than the dryer sheets. I think its safe to say using a dryer sheet in the cleaning process isnt necessary. This method is great if your oven racks arent super dirty, and you have the time to let them soak overnight. Just be sure you have a good scrubbing sponge, and be ready to use some elbow grease!

How Do I Clean Oven Racks

Oven racks are usually relatively straightforward to clean as you can easily remove and soak them.

You can buy special oven rack soaking kits. You place the racks inside large, re-sealable plastic bags, and then add specialist cleaning fluid.

The fluid is extremely harsh and corrosive, so make sure you wear protective gloves and clothing when rinsing the racks.

Alternatively, you could soak the racks in a large washing up bowl, a bin bag or even the bath. Be aware that some cleaning products could be corrosive on enamel baths, so if you go down this route, choose natural ones.

  • Wipe the Grill with Paper TowelsFirst, use paper towels to wipe away the grill. Although the interior part of the grills lid is coated with a porcelain enamel and doesnt peel, small debris could occasionally get into it and must, therefore, be wiped. As you use your grill, some grease deposits and smoke could accumulate on the area so that part should be wiped clean.
  • Wipe the Inner Part of the BowlIts important that you clean the inside part of the bowl and you can do this in two easy steps. First of all, apply the one-touch system when cleaning the debris and ashes that have accumulated in the bowl. Second, remove the leftover residue with the help of steel wool pad and liquid dish soap.
  • Clean the Cooking GratesCleaning the grates is easy. You can do it right before you start grilling. First, preheat the grill by opening the vents. Then set the grill at a high temperature for about 10 to 15 minutes. Use stainless steel wire brushes in removing any excess debris off the grates. This is an important step since any of the residues could stick into the food that you are grilling, which is unhygienic.
  • Wipe the Lid ProperlyWhile the grill is still cool to the touch, wipe the bowl and the lid properly. Use a glass cleaner for this or perhaps a mild detergent soap. This is to remove any excess debris and bring back the original and spotless condition of your grill.

    Get Rid Of The Grease

Dealing with greasy baking trays can be a challenge if you dont know where to start. If youve had trouble trying to take on this slippery customer in the past, give this method a try instead:

Use a paper towel and some oven and grill spray to wipe away grease

You can find these kinds of sprays in the household cleaning aisle of your nearest supermarket. Apply to the grease and then wipe away with a kitchen towel. You dont need to be thorough, just take care of any big clumps of grease that have accumulated in the corners.

    • Fill a sink with hot water and washing up liquid
    • Soak the tray for an hour

Allow the soap to deal with whats left of the oil and grease. If your tray doesnt fully fit in the sink, turn it around after an hour and allow the other side to soak.

Use a soft sponge or cloth to wipe away any residue

If its a non-stick tray youre dealing with, use a soft sponge or cloth to wipe away the remaining grease it should come off fairly easily. If your tray isnt non-stick, use a scouring pad and give it a good scrub to get rid of the more troublesome spots.

Oven Rack Cleaning Method: Dryer Sheets + Dishwasher Detergent

    • Total time: Overnight
    • Rating: 2

The method: Lay an old towel in the bottom of a bathtub, line with a few rows of dryer sheets , then place the racks on top of the dryer sheets. Fill the bath with just enough hot water to cover the racks, then dissolve a 1/2 cup of liquid or powder dishwasher detergent. Let the racks soak overnight, then use the dryer sheets to wipe the racks, removing grease and food particles. Rinse racks clean with clean, soapy water.

How it went:The dryer sheets are supposed to dilute the bond and soften baked-on food, making it a breeze to clean your oven racks. While they were able to get the racks looking decent , the really tough grime didnt come off easily at all. I decided to try using a scrubby sponge to see if that would help, and it did, but there wasnt enough of an impact for me to consider it a good-enough method to use for cleaning in the future. Also, I know plenty of people who try to avoid dryer sheets, so I also considered that in the final rating.

    Oven Rack Cleaning Tips

Getting ready to clean? These oven rack cleaning tips will help you get the best results:

  • Remove chunks of debris. Wipe the racks before placing the racks in the water. This can remove some of the black build up and stuck on grime making the racks easier to clean.
  • Protect the tub. Lay an old towel or rags under the corners of the oven racks if you are concerned about scratching your tub.
  • Give the oven rack cleaner enough dwell time. Youll get the best results if the baking soda and water have enough time to work before you start wiping. Let the racks soak for at least 12 hours before you wipe off the grime.
  • Be persistent. Oven rack dirt is baked on, caked on grease. If grime and black scorch marks remain on the racks after they are wiped, try a more abrasive tool such as a stainless-steel sponge, dish scouring pad, or even an old toothbrush to scrub into the nooks and corners.
  • Clean first then rinse. Finish by rinsing the oven racks thoroughly with clean water, then dry, and replace them in your oven. They will look as good as new!
