No Scrub Baking Soda And Vinegar Grate Cleaning
If you have an extremely dirty grill with stubborn, caked-on grease or grime that doesnt loosen right away soaking the grimy grates overnight in baking soda and white vinegar can save the labor of scrubbing.
Try this method to deep clean your grates at the beginning of grilling season or use it after a cookout, especially if you cant scrub the grates right away.
- Once your grates are completely cool, remove from the grill.
- In a large garbage bag , combine 2 cups of white vinegar and one cup of ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda. The mixture will begin foaming right away.
- Place all the grates into the trash bag and seal it with a tight rubber band or knotted string. Place the bag with the grates and the solution in a cool, out-of-the-way place and wait 8-12 hours or overnight.
- Remove the grates from the bag and rinse in a large sink or with a hose. Most, if not all of the grime should fall away from the grates. Rub any stubborn residue away with a ball of aluminum foil or sponge it will be much easier and looser than before soaking.
- Seal the garbage bag and discard it and any remaining solution.
- Return your grates to your grill.
Cover Your Outdoor Grill
It may seem obvious, but covering your grill is a must if you’re keeping it outdoors. Without a cover, all the dust, dirt, pollen, cobwebs, and insect mess that covers your deck or patio during the off-season will equally cover your grill. Also, grills stay dryer under a cover, which helps reduce corrosion of the metal parts.

Clean Your Gas Grill Depending On How Often It Is Used
As daunting as it may sound, cleaning your grill each time you use it is one of the most important grill maintenance habits. How deep of a clean your gas grill needs will depend on your frequency of use. This blog: How to Deep Clean Your BBQ, will provide detailed instructions on how to give your grill great yearly maintenance to ensure longevity and great functionality.
If you use your grill every day:Grids should be cleaned while the grill is still hot from the previous cook, however, you can also do this while preheating if you forgot. This disinfects and cleans your grill on its own. Brush the grates to remove any residue and to keep it looking fresh. When your BBQ party is over, dont forget to cover your grill as soon as it cools down. The drip tray should be checked and cleaned every 10 cooks to ensure it doesnt overfill. Frequent grilling means that your barbecue will be dirty faster and may be in need of a deep clean every couple of months.
If you use your barbecue infrequently:A brush when done cooking, while the grill is still on but the food has been removed should be sufficient. Check the drip pan every 15 to 20 cooks depending on the amount of drippy food being grilled and clean it out as necessary.
If you use your grill a few times a year:If youre the type who only applies grill maintenance habits once a year because you dont use it often, it is best to do so in the spring before you get the most use out of it.

How To Clean The Outside Of Your Grill
Wipe the outside of the grill lid with a towel and cleaner, says Kolman. If you have a porcelain-coated lid, use a glass cleaner and paper towel. If you have a stainless steel lid, youll need more specialized materials. Some paper towels have bits of cardboard in them and these can scratch the surface of stainless steel, Kolman explains. Instead, use a microfiber towel, special stainless steel cleaner and buff with the grain of the stainless.
Do the same with your side tables. If they are stainless steel, use a microfiber towel and stainless steel cleaner. If your tables are made of thermoset plastic, use a mild dish detergent and warm water instead, recommends Kolman.
And one word of advice with the cleaner: Be patient, says Kolman. Let the cleaner sit for 5 to 10 minutes . That will make the cleaning process much easier.

Ammonia is added to many household and industrial cleaning solutions. In household ammonia cleaning solutions, the ammonia gas is added to water and it can be around 5 to 10% ammonia.
For industrial use, the concentration is around 25% of ammonia or higher and are considered corrosive. Accidental inhalation of too much ammonia vapors can be dangerous to your health. How To Clean Grill Grates
You dont have to clean every part of yourgrill every time, but you should always clean the grate. Food, grease and watercan build up on it quickly, causing corrosion in some cases. Steel grates canbe particularly vulnerable to damage as their coating wears off, but evenceramic-coated high-quality cast iron grill grates can be damaged byimproper handling, causing the coating to chip, and making the whole gratesusceptible to rust. Frequent cleaning will help ensure that it has a longlife, and keep your food tasting great, every time.
Before you clean your grill, its a good ideato check the manufacturers recommendation for which brush to use. Stainlesssteel and uncoated cast iron grates generally wont be damaged by a wire brush, but any grill grate that is porcelain coated may be vulnerable. If youre unsurewhether your grill might be damaged, use a nylon grill brush rather than asteel one. It may take a bit more elbow grease, but youll still be able to getyour grill sparkling clean.

How To Store Your Grill
Grill cover, grill cover, grill cover. It may be obvious, but covering your grill is amust if you’re keeping it outdoors. When I first moved into an apartment with a proper grilling space, I immediately ran to the closest Target and picked up one of those knee-high 12-inch square grills and passed on a cover. Fast forward two months: the thing was a rusty mess and beyond use. Sadly, I let that grill die an early death by keeping it exposed to the elements.
“Cheap-o grill is still going strong after six years.”
Back at the store, I opted for a 22-inch Weber kettle knock-off, this time purchasing a cover at the same time. I’m proud to say that cheap-o grill is still going strong after six years now enjoying a good life of churning out great food at my cousin’s place, thanks in large part to keeping it covered when it was not in use.

So take that little bit of time to keep your grill happy, then throw some food over the flames, sit back and reap the rewards for years to come.
