How To Grill Frozen Bubba Burgers On A Pit Boss – Must Or Bust

Grilling frozen burgersmight seem like a good idea, but its not. When you grill frozen meat, the juices are forced out of the meat and into the grill grates before hitting the flame. The result is dry, overcooked hamburgers that have less flavor and a burnt taste to them.

The best way to cook your hamburger patties is by preparing raw ground beef ahead of time or thawing frozen hamburger patties in advance.

How Long Should You Keep Frozen Burgers

Generally, keeping food frozen prevents foodborne illness and food spoilage. When you thaw and refreeze frozen burgers, it disrupts the bacteria that may likely grow in aging food. Foods frozen at 00F for months are still edible, but you may not like the tastes.

So long the freezer has not failed, and the food within it has been kept frozen, it is safe to eat. However, when you freeze food for too long, it loses nutritional value, texture, and overall quality. In no time, the taste and flavor changes or gets damaged by freezer burn, which dries out food.

No matter how long a freezer preserves your burger, you still have to follow safe food handling and cooking practices. According to USDA, ground beef keeps its quality for not more than four months, so burger patties are not expected to stay longer than that.

If you refrigerate your cooked ground beef or patties very well, they should still maintain their quality for four months.

Getting Your Patties Ready

While the grill is warming up, you can prepare your patties.

Begin by separating them if theyre stuck together. Wedge a blunt knife or a small, stiff spatula into any gap you can find between two patties and give it a twist. They should spring apart without too much trouble. Dont use a sharp knife; it might slice the meat weirdly, and it might do the same to your hands.

If there are pieces of waxed paper stuck to the patties, run cold water over it to thaw just a bit of the surface. It wont take long, and itll peel off neatly. Trying to rip the paper off a frozen patty can leave you with bits of it left behind when it hits the grill.

Dont forget to wash your hands after handling your burgers. They may be frozen, but its still raw meat. Why take any chances?

Thaw In The Refrigerator

This method takes the longest time to thaw the meat.

Place the Ziploc bag on a plate and put it in the refrigerator. The plate helps to contain any drippings and keeps the condensations from transferring to other food in the fridge.

It takes around 12 hours to thaw ½ pound of frozen ground beef when the refrigerator is set at 40 degrees F.

Is It Safe To Grill Frozen Burgers

How many times have you eaten a burger at a fast-food restaurant? Well, in 99% of them, the restaurant uses frozen patties. So, to answer the question yes, its safe to cook frozen burgers, whether you do it on a grill, flat top, or in your frying pan.

The only way this would be unsafe is if the expiration date on the burger package is past due. In that case, be sure not to cook it and properly dispose of the meat.

Another relevant detail to keep in mind here is that, even though once thawed burgers can be refrozen, its probably not the best thing to do.

If your frozen burgers still have a valid expiration date and you thaw them but dont eat them, you can theoretically freeze them again. However, there will be a significant loss in texture, moisture, and, ultimately, flavor.

    Select A Quality Grill

Grilling on a flat top grill is best for grilling burgers. With it, you have control over the doneness of the burger when you are starting from frozen. A charcoal grill works well but may not be suitable for grilling burgers.

This is because it causes a lot of dripping and flaring up as the meat thaw. As a result, your burger may become overcooked from the outside and raw inside.

Although it takes more time to cook a frozen burger than a fresh one, it will eventually get done. Therefore, it is safer to cook a burger on a flat top grill as the patties thaw and reaches safe internal temperature.

Use A Meat Thermometer To Check The Doneness

A good instant-read thermometer will help you to determine if the middle of the patty is cooked to the desired level. Technically, the longer you cook, the dryer and more done burgers will be. Be mindful while cooking that the outside will thaw, cook, and char first.

So the outer part can also help you decide if it is done or not, but this could be very dicey.

Most importantly, never cook them more than medium-rare, and dont ruin the burger with over doneness. This gives you the perfectly cooked inside and perfect crust. A medium-rare burger would be quite soft to the touch, and it goes up in firmness until well done when its pretty stiff.

A medium-rare burger produces pink juice, and this makes a perfect burger.

    Which Package Do I Buy

Dont just buy any frozen burgers to grill thinking they are all the same. They are definitely not all created equal and you still want to purchase a quality cut of beef. What do the burgers look like? If they are in a box, you may not be able to see the actual burger, so here you will take your chances unless you really know the brand. Dont judge the burger by the great picture on the package!

Because they are frozen, you will probably not get that loose-packed type of burger as if you were shaping them yourself. So be prepared that it may not have the light, juiciness factor. The density is going to be there. All in all, check the package thoroughly and read the labels to make your decision. One: Preheat The Grill

Five Tips To Make Frozen Burgers Better

Make sure your grill is clean before firing it up! Built up food residue can cause foods to stick and give unsavory flavors to the food youre cooking.

Once the grill is clean and ready to go, now its time to get it ready for grilling.

To prevent the burger patties from sticking to the grill, youll want to preheat it.

Preheat the grill to 350 degrees for about 10 minutes.

If youre using a charcoal grill or a gas grill that doesnt have a thermometer, you can use the hand test to estimate the temperature of the grill.

To do this, youll want to hold your hand above the grill at the height of a soda can.

If the heat isnt too much by 7-9 seconds, the grill is roughly between 250 and 300.

If it takes 6-7 seconds for you to move your hand, the grill will be around 300-350 degrees.

Any shorter time and the grill is anywhere from 350 degrees and up.

Be cautious when using this technique so you dont burn yourself!

    Can You Grill Frozen Burgers

We love freshly grilled burgers, but can you grill frozen burgers? Absolutely! If you are pressed for time, a frozen burger could be the way to go. You can purchase the box or bag type of burger at your local grocery store.

Or you can make a batch of burgers ahead of time with yourground beef and freeze individually. Wrap each burger in plastic wrap and thenin aluminum foil and stack them in the freezer. Take one out as you need it orseveral for a family meal.

But read on to make sure if you do buy them already frozenyou are buying the right frozen burgers. You want to be safe with the meat thesame as if you were using fresh.

You can grill frozen burgers or cook them on the stovetop asyou would fresh. But there are a couple of differences you want to take into account. We will discuss those below.

We have some tips on what to look for in the burger and howto cook it. It is still a burger, so dress it up how you want with cheese andtoppings. And pick the bun you like most with your burgers. Always be sure totoast it lightly. You wont regret that!

Turn It Over So That Both Sides Cook Evenly

It would be nice to flip your burger over for even cooking on both sides. This could be done when the edges have cooked about a quarter inch in. Before you flip your burger, leave it there until you see meat juice on the uncooked side.

Let whatever you are cooking gets a chance to caramelize before flipping; that initial sear is essential. Then you turn it in with your spatula for another 5-10 minutes.

A few minutes sear on the other side after the meat juice shows up is enough. Once your patties have thawed to where you can poke them with a toothpick, crank up the heat and char to hold in the juice. Dont squish with a spatula!

Freezing dries out the parties, and you would want to save as much juice as possible.

    Put Them On The Grill

Place the patties directly on the grill. Ensure the flame broiler plate is closed, as you will be cooking with indirect heat. Close the lid and leave them on alone for about 5-20 minutes, until you see the juices popping through.

Its perfectly fine to season the patties with salt and pepper during this time. I usually season mine after theyve been on the grill for about 15 minutes or when its almost time to flip them.

I know what youre thinking, the patties already have salt. Thats what I used to think, until I learned that the salt is not only for flavoring the meat, but it adds texture to help give that seasoned crust.

I always use Kosher salt whenever I cook anything on the grill or stovetop.

As mentioned above, youll be able to tell when its time to flip them because the juices will be visible on the top. Heres what youll see when its time to flip them.

Unfortunately, I didnt create a video when I cooked the frozen patties. However, I plan on doing that in the future and when I do, youll be able to find the video on my YouTube channel.
