How Does The Camp Chef Woodwind Pellet Grill Stack Up

How to Use Camp Chef’s Woodwind SG Pellet Grill – Best Grill – Backyard Texas Barbecue

When it comes to all around quality and capabilities, Im not exaggerating when I say that the Camp Chef Woodwind Pellet Grill is one of the top pellet grills on the market.

There really isnt a stone left unturned in the design of these grills. Not only that, they are true set it and forget it cookers which comes in especially handy for longer BBQ smoking sessions.

You can be cooking delicious food all the while monitoring your grill and food from the convenience of a phone app with precision and accuracy.

If you want to see how Camp Chef stacks up to some other pellet grill brands, weve created a couple of resources where we do side by side brand comparisons here:

Camp Chef Smokepro Dlx 24

Now I must admit when I first started to compare the specs between the XT 24 and the DLX 24 I was struggling to work out what the differences were between these two grill models. For instance, they both provide the same cooking area of 570 square inches over two racks. Furthermore, they both use the same controller with a single meat probe port. The more I looked at the grills I then noticed the two subtle differences between them.

The DLX 24 features a more rigid body compare to the XT 24 SmokePro pellet grill: Video

First, the support legs on the DLX 24 have been upgraded over the XT 24. The second difference is the pellet hopper. Does the DLX 24 hold more pellets? No, it still holds 18lbs. However, as you can see from the video above it does feature the pellet hopper cleanout/purge shoot.

Now, this may not seem like an important feature, but it is a nice feature to have. For instance, lets say youre in the middle of a cook and you want to change from say oak pellets to apple. Well with the pellet purge shoot its so much quicker/easier to do this compared to the XT 24. Again though, there is no direct flaming broiling possible with this grill.

Why Choose A Pellet Grill

Pellet grills and smokers are versatile. You can barbecue, smoke, braise, bake, roast, or grill. They are easy to use and provide consistent heat and temperature control. In short, smoking adds flavor and tenderizes and using a pellet grill guarantees great results.

With the touch of a button, you can experience a true wood-burning flame. Just plug in the grill, fill the hopper with pellets, use your phone or the control panel to set the desired temperature and smoke level. No stress whatsoever…

Electric and gas grills fail to add the flavor and smoke we love most when barbecuing over wood. Charcoal, especially grilling on a Big Green Egg, is one of our favorites because of the unique flavor profile. But, charcoal can be tough to light. It is finicky to keep at a consistent temperature without patience and practice. And when you are done grilling, you need to deal with heaps of ash.

We love pellet grills because they are easy to light, impart a hardwood smokey flavor of your choice, and hold consistent temperature for either smoking, grilling, or both. Best of all, clean up is easy. A 20-lb bag of natural wood pellets produces merely 1% of ash.

Grilling and smoking on a pellet grill is convenient and really enjoyable for anyone from the novice all the way to the expert pitmaster.

Can I Line My Drip Pan In Foil

Camp Chef SmokePro DLX 24 Pellet Grill

Yes, you can line your drip pan in foil for easy cleanup. We would just recommend double checking the foil and make sure there are no paths for the oil to go into the bottom of the pellet grill. If you have a louvered drip pan, the only time we would not recommend foil is when you are using the direct heat option. The foil would deflect the heat making it indirect heat where it cannot flow up through the louvers.

What Does A Flame Error Mean

This happens when the fire in the grill goes out or falls below a certain temperature and does not go back up. This happens more so in the winter months. In colder weather, close the chimney down almost all the way down, to keep the heat in the grill. Also, make sure the pellets are dry and do not have any moisture in them. If they crumble easy, then they have moisture in them.

Should I Worry About My Pellets Catching On Fire In My Auger Chamber

The pellets in the auger can catch on fire if you do not use the Shutdown mode and just unplug it or turn it off. Also, the grease drain, chimney and back air vent need to be cleaned. The manual suggests inspecting every 50 hours of use, and thoroughly clean after 200 hours of use. Ash, grease, and smoke can build up in those areas making it difficult for the smoke to escape from the grill, creating back burn.

A Jam In The Pellet Grill Auger

If you own a pellet grill, you may have learned the hard way about this issue. It often occurs when the pellets are left in the hopper too long. Some grill users will leave pellets in place for several weeks or longer.

If the hoppers pellets get moisture in them from sitting in the hopper, when they are fed through the auger, they begin to get munched together, which causes the auger to jam and other issues. If moisture is not the culprit, it could be an issue with a faulty or broken component. Usually, you need to contact the supplier to get the problem repaired.

What Can You Cold Smoke

Camp Chef SmokePro PG24 Deluxe Pellet Grill

It is not easy to answer this question. There are foods that are easy and safe to smoke and some others are hard to cold smoke and might even have health hazards when done wrong.

Basically, you can smoke about any food. However, there are things to keep in mind before starting.

In the cold smoking process, the temperature stays in the danger zone for a long time and this can make bacteria grow easily and fast.

As long as you do your research and use the right sanitary rules you should be safe to start with cold smoking on your pellet grill.

Check to see how far open the chimney is and try closing the chimney down. If it is a windy/breezy day that can also affect the temperature. We also recommend that you only use Camp Chef pellets as that can vary the temperature. Finally, make sure the thermocouple inside the grill is not leaning leftit needs to be standing straight up. On colder days, that is a lot of steel to heat up, therefore we suggest a pellet blanket, close chimney down and keep out of wind.

What Is Flame On Camp Chef Smoker

If your Camp Chef pellet grill shows FLAME it means the fire is extinguished. You can fix this by checking pellets, augur, controller, and power source. If there is an accumulation of ash in the ash pot, clear it immediately. You need to clean the RTD probe, in case of carbon build-up on the RTD probe.

Starting Up The Camp Chef Pellet Grill

  • Plug in the grill
  • Press the Power switch and turn the dial to your selected temperature. If the auger is already full of pellets then there is no need to run the Feed cycle.
  • You will hear the fan kick on and the auger start to move and begin to kick pellets into the fire pot. Your fire rod will begin to eat up as well.
  • Leave the lid open for about 5-7 minutes until you hear the pellets in the firepot ignite. This will sound kind of like a torch lighting or a gas burner igniting.
  • Close the lid and allow about 10-15 minutes to preheat the grill.
  • Using a good bristle free grill brush, clean off the grill grates.
  • While you are waiting, make sure youve got the grease trap in place and the grease bucket hanging to catch any grease that comes out during the cook.
  • Put your grates on if they arent already in place and when the pellet grill comes up to temperature go ahead and put on your food!

A Quick Brand Overview Of Camp Chef

Back in the early 1990s, Camp Chef founder and avid outdoorsman Ty Measom noticed that there was a genuine lack of quality when it came to the outdoor cooking equipment specifically catered towards adventurers.

As any great entrepreneur would, he set out to create a product to solve this issue and serve the needs of outdoorsmen and women who wanted to enjoy delicious food while they adventured.

Eventually, he produced a camping stove that was incredibly portable, durable, and high quality. It received rave reviews, and the Camp Chef brand was born.

Over time theyve expanded their line of products nowadays you can find dutch ovens, camping stoves, flat top grills, pellet grills, and much more on Camp Chefs website.

No matter which of their products youre looking at, one thing remains the same. The quality of their products is at or near the top of the list, regardless of which type of grill or piece of equipment it is. They place a large amount of design, care, and craftsmanship into every single one of their products.

Increase Use Of Stainless Steel

Camp Chef SmokePro DLX Pellet Grill and Smoker

While some of the larger/higher-spec models in the SmokePro range feature stainless steel upper cooking racks, other than the fire pot that pretty much is the only stainless steel you will find. However, on the Woodwind range every grill, even the tiny WiFi 20 features a stainless steel lid.

Some of the larger/higher spec Woodwind grills feature upper and lower stainless steel cooking racks. Stainless steel is not only easier to clean due to lack of corrosion, but it also means your grill will have a longer life.

Performance: Tighter Control For Smoking Precision

Camp Chef claims its more advanced controller unit keeps temperatures within 5 degrees of the set temperature, and thankfully, this smoker delivers on that promise. Traditionally, backyard chefs had to accept that their smokers would fluctuate as much as 60 degrees above or below the desired temperature. These swings arent as critical when dealing with more forgiving projects such as a pulled pork roast, but they can have large impacts on touchier meats such as racks of ribs or salmon.

We didnt have to question if the set temperature matched the actual cooking temperature for our meals.

In testing with standalone grill thermometers, the SmokePro DLX actually stayed within 10 degrees of the set temperature most of the time. Additionally, the measured temperature at the grill surface was much closer to the readout temperature display than other smokers in this category. This told us we didnt have to question if the set temperature matched the actual cooking temperature for our meals.

Why Wont My Grill Get Below 180

Due to the grill being made from all steel, you will want to make sure its in the shade, and not in direct sunlight, especially when its hot outside. Think of how hot your car can get during the summer months. Kinda the same thing. Therefore its normal to not be able to get lower temps on hot days.
