How To Make Grilled Chicken Wings With Buffalo Sauce

How to Grill Flavorful, Marinated Chicken Wings

Begin by seasoning the wings with salt and pepper.

Grill the wings over moderate heat, turning frequently, until golden. You dont want the wings to char at all, so keep a close eye on the flame.

Meanwhile, make the sauce by melting the butter with the garlic in the microwave. Stir in the hot sauce and spices and set aside.

When the wings are done, dip them in the sauce. .

Serve immediately and enjoy!

Note: I like Franks Hot Sauce for this recipe because its pretty mild. For spicier wings, use a hotter sauce.

The secret to these chicken wings is a smoky charcoal fire and a fantastic dry rub that gives them a great barbecue flavor. Finish them off with a sweet honey barbecue sauce or try a tangy sauce like mumbo sauce. These sticky, delicious wings will make a whole meal or the perfect appetizer before a serious barbecue dinner.

How Long Do You Grill Chicken Wings

In general, it takes about 20 minutes to grill wings over direct medium-high heat of a covered gas grill. It is important to properly heat your grill. The amount of time it takes to properly cook chicken wings on the grill will vary according to the size of the wings and also the kind of grill used. Look for crisped skin with some good char. And before you remove the wings from the grill, check the temperature with a meat thermometer. Chicken is done when it reaches an internal temp of 165F.

How Long Should I Marinate Chicken

Most recipes will tell you to marinate chicken at least 1 hour, but overnight is better. The reason for an overnight marinade is because youll achieve better flavor penetration. The longer the chicken sits in the marinade, the more flavor you will have. The best way to do this is to make your chicken marinade the night before, then cover your chicken in a large bowl, or add the marinade along with the chicken to a bag that you can seal.

Refrigerate the marinating chicken overnight, then pull them out when you are ready to fire up the grill. Grill up that chicken!

If you do not have time to marinate your chicken that long, you can still get some flavor penetration with only 30 minutes, particularly if you are working with smaller pieces of chicken. The rule of thumb, though, is that a longer marinade is better for chicken. I prefer 24 hours.

If you’re after the best flavor, allow the wings a good couple hours to marinate in the fridge. Put the chicken wings in a large zip-top bag and pour the marinade all over, then zip the bag shut and massage the chicken to make sure it is well-coated with the marinade. Lay the bag of marinated wings flat on a tray and refrigerate for a couple of hours or until ready to grill.

Can I Use Other Cuts Of Chicken For This

We have used this marinade for various cuts of chicken! You will want to keep it pound for pound but other cuts we have tried are chicken breasts, thighs, and even just chicken drumsticks.

The cooking time for other cuts will be different when it comes to grilling but just make sure that your internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F.

What Can You Do With Leftover Marinade

The chicken wing marinade recipe below makes about 3/4 cups, which we have found to work great for 12 wings. Cut it down or double it as needed, but dont worry if you end up with leftover marinade.

If you end up with leftovers, you can use the marinade as a sauce if you like. The important thing to note here is that you must bring it to a boil to kill any pathogens from the raw meat before using it. Then, whisk together a small amount of water and a tablespoon of cornstarch per cup of liquid you are trying to thicken and whisk it into the marinade mixture in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk continuously until thickened.

Next step is cooking the wings. My favorite way to cook marinated wings is to grill them like this. You can also follow the instructions for baking found in this Jerk Chicken Wings recipe, which is essentially to bake them at 450°F until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F, about 40 minutes, flipping them halfway though.

  • Remove the chicken wings from the marinade and discard the marinade. Grill the chicken wings for 20 minutes, turning once halfway through. Keep an eye on them so the skins do not burn. The wings are done when they measure 165 degrees F internally.

Leftover And Reheating Wings

Once the wings have been cooked, they will keep in the fridge for three or four days. The best way to reheat them is on a medium grill for 10 to 12 minutes, turning them halfway through.

They also can be reheated in a 350ºF oven for 10 to 15 minutes. The wings should be placed on a rack, similar to our baked chicken wing recipe, to keep the outside nice and crispy.

The Tequila Lime Dip will keep in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. Besides chicken wings, its also great with fresh vegetables and as a topping for tacos.

What To Serve With Honey Buffalo Wings:

I love to serve these honey buffalo chicken wings with raw veggies on the side, like celery, carrots or broccoli. The cool and clean flavors are the perfect match for the spice in the buffalo sauce. Chips or fries also stand up well to this chicken. Add a cup of ranch or blue cheese dressing on the side to dip them in, and you have one amazing meal!

Is It Safe To Baste While Grilling

    Grilled Turkish

Now, I have mentioned before that I will baste with a marinade while grilling. You will normally see this is a big no-no, especially when it involves raw chicken.

However, I do this all the time and the trick is basting at the beginning of cooking and then stopping about halfway through the cooking process. That way, whatever marinade is on the outside of the item will cook thoroughly.

DO NOT continue to baste with this marinade the whole time or use it as a sauce at the end. If you want to feel safer, boil the marinade and then baste. But I strongly suggest basting these wings, it amps up the flavor and helps get that sticky, caramelize-y outside on the wings, yum!

    Grilled Chicken Wings Buffalo Sauce

You will use a homemade hot wing sauce for this recipe. Many standard hot wing sauces are simply a mixture of butter and hot sauce. Those sauces taste quite good but can be so much better.

For my grilled wings, I add a little something more. To prepare this sauce, I add some fresh garlic and some fresh hot peppers for additional flavor and heat to the sauce.

Classic Buffalo chicken wings are fried but I love the flavor and ease of cooking them on the grill. They are truly no fuss, no muss and finger-lickin good! The key is to cook them over a moderate flame so that the fat renders out and the skin gets nice and crispy. You can serve them plain they are really delicious as is but the seasoned Buffalo sauce takes them over the top. Its mild enough for most kids: as you can see, my son and his friends polished off an entire 3-pound test batch in about ten minutes!
