Grilling this Soy Brown Sugar Salmon in Foil makes for an easy weeknight dinner that is impressive enough to serve as weekend fare for guests. The salmon is first marinated in a simple marinade, the sealed in foil and grilled for about 15 minutes just until it flakes apart!

It’s been a while since I shared this recipe for garam masala salmon steaks on here, which is surprising since we eat salmon often at our house. I love to pan-sear individual fillets in my cast-iron skillet, or cook it in the oven as a sheet pan meal.

But one of my favorite methods for preparing salmon is wrapping it in foil and grilling or baking it. And this soy brown sugar salmon that is perfect for the summer grilling season is one of the best grilled salmon recipes ever.

I distinctly remember the first time I ever had salmon cooked on the grill in foil. It was at a family reunion in southern Utah when I was in high school and it was the most delicious, flavorful salmon I had ever eaten.

I’m positive I was the kid going back for second and third helpings, eating way more than my fair share of that delicious grilled fish.

The hardest part is just letting the salmon marinate for a couple of hours before grilling it.

Do I Have To Cook This On The Grill

Nope! Because this dish is wrapped in foil, it really isnt going to have any additional flavor added from the grill. The benefit of cooking this outside is to not have to turn on your oven, to be able to cook when the power goes out , or on the go when you are camping.

That means, cooking it in an oven, or even a single-serving in something like an air fryer is totally acceptable. Ive even heard of people doing these in the Instant Pot.

How Long Does It Take To Grill Salmon

It takes about 20 minutes. I used an instant read meat thermometer to make sure that the salmon was cooked to a safe internal temperature.

It should have an internal temperature of 145 degrees. You will need to insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the salmon to ensure accuracy.

Salmon easily flakes when it is fully cooked and turns a pinkish color.

Fire up your grill! Youll want to preheat the grill to medium-high while youre prepping the salmon to save yourself some time.

Gather your salmon fillets. You can use any size you would like, but I find the smaller fillets are easier to manage when removing from the grill.

Place them on a long sheet of foil large enough to fold over the salmon to create an enclosed packet.

Drizzle avocado oil over the fish, then sprinkle it with sea salt and Italian seasoning .

Lay some lemon slices on top , then wrap it all up in a cute little package.

Dont Overcook Your Salmon

Even though you are cooking with steam, you still want to avoid overcooking the salmon. Medium rare salmon is best for fresh salmon. Cooking it past that point just dries it out and makes the texture far less appetizing.

If you are cooking one inch thick bone-in fillets, then you can expect it to be done in 15 to 20 minutes at about 350 to 375 degrees f. If you are doing a thin slice of the tail end, a half-inch or less thick, then it will be about half that.

Salmon cooks quickly. The one thing about foil tenting it you cant see or test easily for doneness. So you have to trust in time and temperature to do the job.

When it is getting close you CAN temp it through the foil, but thatll poke a hole and let some of the steam escape.

    How Long Do You Cook Salmon On The Grill

    The salmon cooking time will depend on its thickness. A large, thick piece of salmon, closer to 1 ½ inches thick will take around 15-20 minutes at 400 degrees F. It will require the same time if baking in the oven.

    Smaller, thinner, salmon, around 1-inch thick, will take closer to 10-15 minutes at 400 degrees F. Again, it will require the same time if baking in the oven.

    Lay Out Foil On A Baking Sheet

    • You will need two large pieces of foil to securely wrap the fish in. Two pieces of foil also makes the foil packet sturdier.
    • I also recommend using a heavy-duty foil because its less likely to tear when transferring the fish to the grill. If you dont have heavy duty foil, then youll want to double up the foil.
    • To prep the foil, line a large baking sheet with heavy duty foil that is 6-inches longer than your salmon . Lightly spray the foil with cooking spray. Place the salmon in the center and fold the foil up snuggly around the salmon to create a boat to hold in the marinade.
    • If you do not want your salmon to touch the foil directly, you can lay a sheet of parchment paper on top of the foil. Cooking food directly in foil is a health concern to some, but the aluminum it may add to your diet is negligible . Still, so do whatever makes you the most comfortable.
    • Adding the salmon to the baking sheet makes for easy transportation of the salmon to and from the grill slide it on and slide it off! Its easier to line the foil on top of the baking sheet instead of transferring the salmon to the baking sheet after its wrapped in foil. The less you have to handle the foil salmon packet, the better, because there will be less chances of it tearing. I recommend a flat baking sheet if you have one for easiest sliding ability.

    • Depending upon your cut of salmon, the fish will likely be pink when it is done and some varieties like coho are naturally a very deep, almost ruby pink. They key is that it is opaque and flakes easily. If its a translucent-looking pink, its likely not done. Again, testing with an instant read thermometer will remove any doubts.

    You can use any type of salmon! Just be sure if youre using salmon that was previously frozen that it is completely thawed before you grill it.

    Atlantic salmon, king salmon, choho salmon, and sockeye salmon are all amazing. I personally prefer King salmon or Atlantic salmon because theyre fattier and therefore more flavorful and tender.

    Does Salmon Cook Faster In Foil

    Its foil makes the process of cooking the fish faster and more efficient. The use of it as an alternative means to cook fish is another good reason. Certainly, salmon is a healthy fish, as it is in fact. If you cook it in foil, you have no need to put too much oil or butter to it to make the best cooking possible.
