  • Watch out for its color. The shrimp meat should turn white, and the outer shell should look pink or opaque from its original and translucent color.
  • Check the temperature of the shrimp. The internal heat should be about 145°F.
  • The shrimp must be in a curve shape, not rounded, as the latter would mean that it is overcooked.

Other Ways To Cook Shrimp Skewers

No grill, or too cold out to bother? You can still make these shrimp skewers.

  • Broiler: Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray and arrange your assembled shrimp skewers on the sheet. Broil about 5 inches away from the heat for about 2 minutes on each side or until they’re cooked through.
  • Grill pan: Heat 1 to 2 tablespoons of oil in a grill pan over medium-high heat. Grill the skewers, in batches if necessary, for about 2 minutes on each side or until they’re cooked through.

What’s The Best Sauce For Grilling Shrimp

I highly recommend using Dr Pepper Barbecue Sauce for this recipe. It adds the perfect flavor to these grilled shrimp. If you are a fan of spicy shrimp, we love this Jalapeno Barbecue Sauce. However, you can use your favorite barbecue sauce or whatever you have on hand.

Direct medium heat and flipping the shrimp halfway during the cooking time should be sufficient for 5-7 minutes of grilling time. When the shrimp is cooked, the exterior should become a lovely pink hue, but the flesh within should remain white and opaque throughout the process. Make sure not to overcook the shrimp, otherwise it will turn tough and rubbery.

Shrimp is a popular protein all year because not only does it have a mild flavor that fits into many different cuisines , but it takes mere minutes to cook! Just until the meat is no longer translucent and barely firm to the bite is as far as you need to go.

Can You Grill Shrimp From Frozen

Totally! Unlike chicken or salmon that must be cooked to a correct temperature to ensure their safety, shrimp are so small and so quick to cook that its hard to undercook them or serve them underdone. Cooking them from frozen actually helps prevent overcooking, leading to juicer, more tender shrimp.

    Flavoring Shrimp For The Grill

Full-fat yogurt is the secret ingredient for flavorful grilled shrimp. The acidity of the yogurt gently tenderizes the shrimp before grilling and is an efficient vehicle for seasoning it with fresh herbs, garlic, and lemon juice. On the grill, the fat from the yogurt protects the shrimp from drying out.

Next step: skewering. Running a skewer or two through your shrimp keeps them from falling into the flames of the grill, makes them easier to flip and remove. Either metal or wooden skewers can be used, but be sure to soak wooden skewers for two hours before grilling.

    Choose The Best Shrimp

    • Here in Texas, we love the freshness and flavor of our local Texas Gulf Shrimp, however, you can choose a shrimp that is local to your area or thats readily available to you. Large, Jumbo or Colossal are the best choice for this recipe.
    • If shrimp will be your main dish, count on 1/3- to 1/2-pound per person. If you choose to leave the shells on, make it 3/4-pound per person.
    • Choose raw shrimp for the best results for this recipe. If you use previously cooked shrimp youll most likely end up with overcooked, rubbery shrimp.
    • Shrimp should have a fresh, lightly fishy saltwater smell. If they smell bad, like ammonia, chlorine or gasoline, they should not be eatenthrow them out!

    The Best Shrimp For Grilling

Large shrimp are best for grilling, as their size aids in preparing them for the grill and from falling through the grates or overcooking. Large can be anywhere from U/10 but I tend to find 20/25 shrimp per pound to be the most readily available at most grocery stores.

Buy shell-on, tail-on shrimp and peel them yourself theyre usually cheaper and taste better. I always keep frozen shrimp on hand for quick meals, but if you can get fresh, local shrimp, seize the day and grill them.

Learn how to grill shrimp perfectly so you can have juicy skewers whenever youre cooking outdoors. Its really fast and easy.

Shrimp are one of my favorite things to eat, especially in the warm months. Theyre light and juicy, but are also an awesome source of protein. Grilling shrimp is one of the best ways to prepare them because the high heat cooks them quickly but leaves them tender on the inside. The smoky flavor the char marks leave is really tasty too.

I try to keep frozen shrimp in my freezer at all times for when I need a fast dinner. Heres how I thaw my shrimp when I need them. I like frozen shrimp because they are frozen quickly after theyre caught, which makes them really fresh when defrosted.

As much as I love grilled chicken, grilling shrimp is much faster. The tricky part about grilling shrimp is that theyre small, so they have a tendency to fall through the grates if you dont grill them on a skewer. Just make sure to soak wood skewers in water for 30 minutes prior to putting them on the grill so they dont burn.

You also want to make sure you pat your shrimp completely dry before you grill them. This prevents them from sticking to the grill. After you pat them dry, drizzle on a little bit of olive oil, and sprinkle with salt, and pepper.

When I serve plain, grilled shrimp, I like to serve them with a squeeze of lemon juice. It adds the perfect little extra flavor to the shrimp.

The Best Way to Grill Shrimp
    • I prefer deveined, tail-on shrimp, so you can do this yourself by holding firmly to the piece of shrimp right above the tail and peeling the remaining shell off. Next, with a sharp paring knife, make a small slice down the back ridge of the shrimp. From there you can remove the vein with your fingers and rinse under cold water. If you dont want to have the hassle, most seafood departments sell shrimp already deveined with the tail left on.
