What Is The Kudu Grill
The Kudu Grill is an open fire grill that is inspired by the South African braai grills. Unlike most charcoal or gas grills the Kudu Grill is more like cooking over an open fire. With the Kudu grill you can use charcoal or wood and cook directly over the coals. But there is much more to it than that.
One very unique feature about the Kudu grill is the movable, adjustable grill grate. The Elevation Bars on the Kudu allow you to move the grates around, move them over the fire, move them away from the fire, and raise and lower the food to control the temperature.
Most charcoal grills control the temperature of the coals with vents to increase or decrease airflow. There are no vents on the Kudu but the ability to raise and lower the cooking grates and move the food away from the coals allows you to effectively control the cooking temperature.
One of the most important techniques to master on the grill is using 2 zone cooking. To achieve that on most grills you have the heat on one side of the grill and the meat on the other. On the Kudu Grill you can lower the grates all the way down to get some intense searing heat or raise them up for a more gentle indirect heat.
Here is a video showing the unboxing and assembling of the grill that will give you an idea of how the grates adjust:
Why Chefs Are Obsessed With The Kudu Grill
The Kudu looks like it might come to life at any moment, swinging its two metal arms forward to sneak a sip of your ice-cold IPA. One arm protrudes north from either side of the fire pit, and theyre what allow the Kudus many attachments to move both horizontally and vertically for mega heat control. Think ten-zone fire, not two.
Do we need all of those bells and whistles on a grill? No. Do we want them? After hearing chefs talk up the Kuduyes.
You can do the same stuff on other grills, you can just do more at the same time on this one, says Cheetie Kumar, chef and owner of Garland in Raleigh, NC, but she uses the Kudu at home. You can cook a ribeye until its almost there, swing it around and let it rest, then get some corn going on the grates and maybe sear some peaches on the cast iron. Somebodys hopefully making a salad somewhere inside, and youve got a whole meal. Its almost like having a kitchen range outdoors, she says.
Its the only grill I use to make paella, which is tricky because you need to start out really hot and then move to a cooler area, says Katie Button, chef and owner of Cúrate and Nightbell in Asheville, NC. You can do that by timing your charcoal, but thats a lot more finicky. All you do with the Kudu is move the pan up. Its so simple.
Camp Chef Sidekick Sear
Itd be impossible to dig the previously mentioned Woodwind without having plenty of love for its most ideal companion. If the Woodwind is Batman, then the Camp Chef Sidekick Sear is undoubtedly the most epic version of Robin. Always ready for action, this sweet slice of backyard cooking gear can bake, boil, braise, grill, saute, or sear whatever youre concocting.
Gunky grease becomes an afterthought thanks to the brilliantly designed heat defusing plates. These things transform your run-of-the-mill flames into relentless infrared heat that waves its magic wand to vaporize grease. No more mega-mess. Just tasty good times no matter your flavor.

Small Business Spotlight | Bibb County | Region 6
Summertime is here! Well, almost. And with the rising temperatures and longer days, who doesn’t love going outside on the weekends to grill burgers, chops or steaks for the family?
But, if you’re like most people the moment the food is done, you’re inside while the fire is left to die down. But what if there’s could be more to the fire?
Sure, it provides heat to cook with, but have you ever paused for a moment to marvel at its beauty? Think about it. When was the last time you gathered with a group of friends around an open fire to tell stories? In South Africa, they enjoy the flame and gather around it once the cooking is done. And this where Stebin Horne was introduced to the braai, and the story of Kudu Grills began.
Stebin’s wife is from South Africa, where the rural areas are populated with cattle and corn farmers, just like many areas in South Georgia. During a visit, he noticed that her brother had welded a metal grate to a disk harrow. The family used it to cook on, but they continued to hang around long after the meat was cooked for fellowship and storytelling. This intrigued Stebin and got him thinking – why would you cover up the enjoyment of the fire? Why would you not show and experience that?
He came home and partnered with his hometown friend, Steward Vernon, to bring this experience to America.
Stebin offered some words of wisdom for those thinking about starting a business:

The company has been around since 1997 with their first prototype being created out of necessity by founder Michael Jantzens father who was on safari when he ran into some car trouble and had no barbecue equipment available.
His dad rigged up two metal containers from his vehicle to use as fire pits and used charcoal briquettes inside one container which would then heat up the other container filled with meat so it could be cooked over the fire pit.
Kudu grills were born out of this need to cook outdoors and they would become a flourishing business with Kudu grills being sold across North America. Kudu grills are designed for those who love to go on camping trips and adventures either alone or in groups.
Whether youre headed out on a long, arduous cross-country journey or just looking to grill up some tasty food by your favorite campfire, Kudu has got you covered.

The Kudu Grill Gives You A Cookout Like No Other
As BBQ season approaches, theres the age-old argument of charcoal vs gas. While those are the more modern ways of outdoor cooking today, theres still a tradition of woodfire grilling in many parts of the world. Braai is the South African method of grilling. In fact, it translates in Afrikaans to barbecue or grill. The main difference between a braai and the BBQ were used to is that they cook over wood. Although today, the use of charcoal and gas has increased for braai due to convenience, wood grilling still remains popular. KUDU Grills is bringing back the tradition of braai with the KUDU Grill.
The founder of KUDU Grills Stebin Horne was first introduced to braai while visiting his wifes family in South Africa. The grills were the centerpiece for gathering at the home for everyone to enjoy the cooking process together. He also noted the quality and flavors of the food cooked on the grills were astounding. Horne then redesigned and perfected what became the KUDU Grill, the communal outdoor grill named after the kudu of the African plains. Its quick to assemble, easy to operate, and tough for all your cookout needs.
