A Quick Brand Overview Of Camp Chef

Camp Chef Woodwind WIFI 24 Pellet Grill Review – BBQ Grill Reviews

Back in the early 1990s, Camp Chef founder and avid outdoorsman Ty Measom noticed that there was a genuine lack of quality when it came to the outdoor cooking equipment specifically catered towards adventurers.

As any great entrepreneur would, he set out to create a product to solve this issue and serve the needs of outdoorsmen and women who wanted to enjoy delicious food while they adventured.

Eventually, he produced a camping stove that was incredibly portable, durable, and high quality. It received rave reviews, and the Camp Chef brand was born.

Over time theyve expanded their line of products nowadays you can find dutch ovens, camping stoves, flat top grills, pellet grills, and much more on Camp Chefs website.

No matter which of their products youre looking at, one thing remains the same. The quality of their products is at or near the top of the list, regardless of which type of grill or piece of equipment it is. They place a large amount of design, care, and craftsmanship into every single one of their products.

    Woodwind Pellet Grill Reviews

When I do my research for my pellet grill posts I like to find good quality reviews from both BBQ professionals and your average back yard BBQ owner to provide as wider perspective as possible. In this case with the Camp Chef Woodwind range its a bit more complicated.

As I have discussed above, some versions of this pellet grill are fitted with the first generation controller and some are fitted with the second-generation PID WiFi controller. Therefore, please keep that in mind when watching the reviews below.

    Camp Chef Woodwind WiFi 24

With wifi, you can control the temperature from your phone or tablet. And if you ever have any problems, you can just connect to the internet and troubleshoot from there.

You can also use the app to find new recipes. So if you ever feel stuck, you can always try out one of the many delicious recipes that are out there.

    What Can Be Improved

Overall, I was very impressed with the Woodwind.

The overall grilling experience has been a delight – however, there are a few things that I would change if I had the chance.

There seem to be a few problems with the temperature accuracy. It doesnt happen often, and it isnt a big deal however, I have noticed a slight variance with the temperature the grill is using and the one I set it to. It is still much more manageable than a charcoal grill.

Camp Chef Woodwind Pellet Grill Models

As Ive stated above, the Woodwind range has been around for a few years now and has seen upgrades along the way. Therefore, instead of referencing the grills below in size order, I wanted to discuss the first generation of Woodwind grills and then move onto the second generation with WiFi.

First-generation Woodwind grills are still available on the Camp Chef website so its worth discussing them. After all, they do cost a bit less than the latest Woodwind grills. So if you like the general construction and features of these grills but your budget is on a tight leash, they may still be worth considering.

Questions, Answers, And A Problem Resolved With The Camp Chef Woodwind WiFi 24 Pellet Grill

For those of you who remember my Caribbean Sticky Wings recipe from last year, I jumped into the world of pellet grills about 18 months ago. Before then, my longtime grilling setup had been three-fold: a charcoal grill for direct-heat grilling, an electric smoker for low-and-slow BBQ, and a gas grill for consistent temperatures with minimal effort. After getting acquainted with that first pellet grill, I decided to sell my electric smoker and gas grill because the pellet grill provided the consistent temperature I like to rely on during recipe development, as well as low-and-slow temperatures for exceptional BBQ I kept the charcoal grill on hand for high-heat direct grilling.

Recently, the team at Camp Chef offered to send me one of their new Woodwind 24 WiFi pellet grills, which seemed to be a significant upgrade to my current grill. So I thought Id take a moment and run you through my impressions.

Heres a shot of the whole shebang, so you can get an idea of what Ill be describing in the following paragraphs. The grill itself feels nice and sturdy, and putting it together took less than an hour on a chilly, cloudy December afternoon in Virginia. The included bottle opener makes the assembly process a bit more exciting.

I have plenty of recipes Ive developed using this pellet grill, and Ill share them in the coming weeks. For now, enjoy a few teaser pics. First up: Smoked Standing Rib Roast .

A To Z List Of The Best Bbq Wood Pellets

A pellet grill/smoker is only as good as the BBQ pellets you put into it. The type/quality of the BBQ wood pellets you use will impact temperature performance and smoke flavour. There are many pellet flavours including Apple, Hickory, Mapel, Oak and Walnut to name but a few. However, some brands are hardwood blended pellets whereas others are 100% single wood species.

In this article, I provide details on over 20 brands of BBQ wood pellets, their range of flavours, whether they are 100% single wood species or hardwood blended pellets, their typical price and where they are available. I also provide tips on how to get the best deal when buying BBQ wood pellets and how to test pellet quality. Finally, I discuss the new kid on the block, charcoal pellets and their special attributes compared to all other hardwood BBQ pellets.

    Pid Controller And Smoke Control

One of the best things about pellet grills in general is the ability they give you to precisely control your temperature. The Woodwind series grills take precision to the next level.

Most pellet grills allow for you to set your grills temperature in 15°F or 25°F increments but Camp Chef grills let you set your temperature in 5°F increments. A proprietary grill controller that utilizes PID technology allows for you to easily and precisely set your temperature with the turn of a dial.

Camp Chef has made managing your smoke levels incredibly user friendly too. Theyve created a smoke number system where you can choose how smokey your grill can get on a scale of 1-10 to impart the perfect amount of flavor onto your food. There really isnt a better way to dial in the taste of your BBQ than by precisely controlling your smoke setting like this.

    Camp Chef Woodwind Pros

    • Easy to clean out ash from the burn box. Most other pellet grills require you to remove the heat shield and grates to vacuum out the burn box. Camp Chef designed a clever base that allows you to dump ash into the bucket and then twist the bucket to dump the ash. We recommend cleaning the ash out every cook to avoid flame outs.
    • The ability to control levels of smoke at low temperature gives you the freedom to add more smoke influence to lower temperature cooking.
    • The hopper is large and accommodates a lot of pellets , compared to similarly priced grills.
    • There are four temperature probes versus two or three, which is great for a large cook. Most other comparable grills have only two.

    Is The Woodwind Wi

    Camp Chef Woodwind WiFi 24

It seems like this grill has hit it out of the park when it comes to versatility, ease of use, and all-around grilling experience. Many people love the fact they can grill, smoke, and sear all on the same unit, saving time, money, and space.

The Woodwind 24 also comes at a great price when you consider how many features are included, not to mention the Wi-Fi capabilities as well as the innovative hopper system.

Personally, I absolutely love the Woodwind 24, and if you think you will too, .

This is a great pellet grill built with respectable results, above-average construction, and a few tucked-away bells and whistles to get you, well, whistling. Everything we asked of the Camp Chef Woodwind Wi-Fi, it did well. We loaded it chock-full of meat it gave us great smoke and better bark. We set high expectations for temperature evenness it met them. Even ash disposal turned out effortless by comparison. If youre intrigued so far, good news! It gets even better.

    Camp Chef Woodwind Ownership Experience

Pellet smokers are largely maintenance-free, other than routine cleaning. Butthere are some complex components that have been known to fail, and there aresome parts that need periodic replacement, like the ignitor rod. Because of this, we like to doa review of manufacturer warranties, as well as common issues that a modelmight have.

The Camp Chef Woodwind, and all Camp Chef pellet grills, hasa 3-year warranty. As well, they have a toll-free customer service number forservice issues or product support questions.

    Customer Service

We called with a simple question on a Friday afternoon about2pm ET. When we called, there was an automated call tree service and we were onhold a total of only 1 minute, which is a plus. The customer service personthat answered seemed overall helpful but didnt seem super knowledgeable aboutpellet grills in general. We asked about the 25-30 degree temperaturedifference we were seeing. She asked what kind of pellets we were using and we assured her we were using a premium pellet, Cookin Pellets, which shehad never heard of. That isnt awful, but its not a great sign. In the end,her advice was to check out the large Facebook community for Camp Chef smokersand that someone there would probably be able to help. Not a great response.

    What Is Camp Chef

Camp Chef Woodwind WIFI 24 with Sidekick Review and Cook

Unlike grilling companies such as Traeger and Pit Boss, Camp Chef started their journey making outdoor cookers in Cache Valley, Utah.

Their first ever product, a propane camp stove, became incredibly popular in the 1990s.

According to Camp Chef, they were established on the idea that there had to be a better way to cook outdoors.

As a leading manufacturer for 20 years, the company moved on to expand its line of outdoor cooking equipment, creating portable BBQs, smokers, flat-top grills, and the famous Camp Chef pellet grills.

Their Woodwind range gained a large audience due to the great value for money and quality of the build. Camp Chef also claims to value expert advice and customer service above all.

    Camp Chef Woodwind Overall Rating

The Woodwind is a fairly popular pellet grill, and forunderstandable reasons. It is of average quality, from a reputable, if verylarge, company, and at a good price. We think that better quality can be hadfor the same price range, so we wouldnt call it the most economical choice. Itis, however, a solid choice for people who think theyll use their smoker onlyoccasionally or want to try one out and dont want to make a large investment.

We like the side box options available on the Woodwind and the flexibility thet it provides. Wed love to see a higher-quality grill utilize the same sort of options. But as for the Woodwind, its a good choice for the entry-level cook who also wants the ability to sear or grill.

    Woodwind Wifi Range 20 24 And 36

Well now look at what I refer to as the second generation of Camp Chef Woodwind pellet grills with the upgraded PID WiFi controllers. Other than the WiFi 20 both the WiFi 24 and WiFi 36 are available as stand-alone units or with the optional propane Side Kick or Sear Box. It is worth noting that the WiFi 20 is the only Woodwind pellet grill that is not compatible with the optional propane Side Kick/Sear Box.

Therefore, you have to think carefully before choosing this model, as you wont be able to add that feature at a later date. As you have probably guessed already the WiFi 20 is the smallest offering. That means it has the smallest total cooking area but also the smallest pellet hopper capacity . While not marketed as a portable pellet grill due to its low weight it can be easily moved around to different locations.

The WiFi 20 is the smallest Woodwind in the range. However, its feature-rich using the new PID WiFi controller with 4 meat probe ports: Video Campchef.com

If you are looking for the extra utility and capability the propane Side Kick or Sear Box can offer you will be looking at the larger WiFi 24 or WiFi 36. If your budget is limited you can opt for either model as a stand-alone unit and add the propane Side Kick or Sear Box at a later date.
