I was attending an estate auction when I came across a box which appeared to have a small charcoal grill in it. Upon further inspection, I noticed it was a Weber smoker.

I was sure someone was gonna outbid me, but I won at $18. When I got home, I removed the smoker from the box and found out that it had never been used. I did not know much about the art of smoking or about these smokers until I stumbled across your site.

Well, I have been smoking this little guy every weekend since and the whole family loves the meals this thing turns out. This smoker has been a blast to use along with your site, and it will be smoking for a long time to come.

Arent Traeger Grills Made In The Usa

Traeger, the longest and most established pellet grill brand were originally manufactured in Oregon and were produced in the USA up until 2006 when the Traeger family sold the company. In 2006 the patent that Traeger had on the design of pellet grills/smokers since 1986 ran out, then more makes/brands of pellet grills started to enter the market.

Traeger felt they had to move manufacturing abroad to expand the company to make it viable while still offering a product at a price their customers are happy to pay. Hence, today Traeger pellet grills are made in China.

The Weber Made In The Usa Lawsuit

Summit® Kamado E6 Charcoal Grill

Many consumers look for products made in the USA. They often feel that these products are of a higher quality, or they are motivated by a desire to support American businesses and their local economies. Marketers understand these consumers, and often actively promote products as being made domestically, knowing that this kind of label can boost sales, as well as promoting a companys image to American buyers.

In 2011, Weber faced a class-action lawsuit after consumers discovered that grills sold under the made in the USA label included parts and components made in China and Taiwan. Some of Webers customers felt deceived by the made in the USA label, and took their grievance to court.

At the time, Weber claimed that their made in the USA labeling was not deceptive marketing, issuing the following statement:

Weber believes that because all Weber grills and the disputed accessories are designed and engineered in the USA, and all grills save for one line are manufactured and assembled in the USA using component parts primarily made in the USA, it did nothing wrong.

In a certain sense, if the products are designed in the United States, and contractors in other countries make them to the same standards and quality, perhaps it doesnt matter where they are actually made. But theres no doubt that such practices to make a made in the USA claim ambiguous at best.

The Issue With The Outsourcing

Weber has chosen to outsource their goods for manufacturing purposes for some of these third-world countries due to taxation issues. Large conglomerates tend to pay lower taxes abroad other than in the USA. It lets companies like Weber pay lower taxes.

Outsourcing allows the acquisition of labor at minimum cost. With this, the manufacturing cost of this overseas country is somewhat low. With the relaxed costing and taxation system Weber can save a lot of money.

Apart from that, outsourcing allows the home-built company to focus on its goal. Weber has more straightforward goal developmental plans with this ideology as they dont have to look for any manufacturing issues. They can hire other outside companies to do the heavy lifting on behalf of them.

All these factors can come together and provide the company to build customer retainability with affordable products by increasing the sales and cost of the product enabling their higher profit margin.

A Brief History Of Weber Grills

Driven by his passion for grilling the best steaks for family and friends, Weber’s founder, George Stephen, invented the revolutionary kettle grill in 1952. At the time, he worked for Weber Brothers Metal Works in Chicago, Illinois, and was inspired by a buoy’s shape.

George knew that a rounded cooking bowl with a lid was the key to success. So, he cut the buoy in half, added three legs to the bottom, a handle to the top, and the rest is history.

The legendary barbecue has become a bestseller, and the Weber Grill has been recognized as an innovative designer that creates high-quality products.

Are All Imported Grills Bad

Grilled Nachos | Weber Grills

Does this mean all imported grills are bad? Notnecessarily. But as mentioned earlier, they are not held to the same standardsthat American-made grills are held to. You can feel the quality difference.

BBQ Depot does sell some imported brandsincluding Summerset and Blaze. This is because these brands have shown product support. It may take months andmonths for parts, but eventually those parts become available. With that being said, there are definitely quality issues as well asmanufacturing choices that can end up turning into a headache for the consumer. For example, these grills use flame thrower valves. If you need to replaceyour ignition electrode, you will have to replace the entire valve. Thiscreates a large expense for an inexpensive part. Since the electrode is builtinto the valve, there is not a replacement for it.

There is much that could be said about eachindividual brand that imports their grills. Since a large part of our businessinvolves service and selling replacement parts, we are frequently put in thedifficult position of explaining to customers why there is no product supportfor their grills.

Because of this, we have had to make thedifficult choice of not displaying imported grills in our showroom. When wedisplay a grill and a customer purchases that grill, they hold us accountablefor the quality of the product. Due to the many inconsistencies, we had noalternative but to display products we can stand behind, like our American-madegrills.

The Story Of The Weber Grill Begins With A Buoy

When metalworker George Stephen, Sr. put two halves of a buoy together, he didnt know he was making a charcoal grill that would stand the test of time

Labor Day often means suns out, buns out. Hamburger buns, that is. These days, many of the grills rolled out onto patios across America look more like spaceships than cooking devices. They cater to the technophile, sporting built-in thermometers and light-up knobs. But despite all the high-tech grilling gear, at least one classic has survived: the Weber kettle grill.

The Weber name is inextricably tied to backyard barbecues, but that wasnt always the case. The domed charcoal grill, which many foodies swear gives the best flavor, traces its roots back to Weber Brothers Metal Works. Founded in 1887, the Chicago company produced a range of metal products, from hinges to wagons.

In the 1950s, George Stephen, Sr. worked in sales at Weber Brothers Metal Works, which his father ran at the time. He had an inventive mind always tinkering with metal and springs and gadgets, says Mike Kempster, chief marketing officer at Weber-Stephen Products, the current name for the company, which changed in 1958 when Stephen took over. He often worked on fabricating and selling innovative products, including mailboxes and fireplace equipment. But nothing really stuck, says Kempster.

So in 1952, fed up with ruined meals, Stephen set out to make a better grill.

Weber is one of the great American success stories of one man and a single invention that eventually turned into a major U.S. company employing thousands. The man who started it all was George Stephen, Sr. who, according to Smithsonian Magazine, used pieces of a buoy to create a heavy-duty charcoal kettle grill in 1952.

While other grills were in existence at the time, they were inferior in design due to their open design, according to Stephens . His dome kettle grill kept out the elements and was believed to reflect heat efficiently to properly grill food.

Ten Surprising Products Still Made In America

Try taking your everyday shopping trip to your nearest department or grocery store and buy only American. A little difficult? Employment in Americas manufacturing sector has experienced a precipitous decline in recent years. The U.S. lost 33.1 percent of its manufacturing jobs between 2000-2010, according to the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation. Many of those jobs ended up going to countries such as China, India and Brazil that provide cheaper labor and have looser employment regulations.

But because costs of labor and energy are now on the rise overseas, manufacturing may be in the early stages of a rebound in the U.S. An April study by the Boston Consulting Group found that a third of manufacturers with revenue over $1 billion were considering moving jobs back to the United States. At 58 cents an hour, bringing manufacturing back was impossible, but at $3 to $6 an hour, where wages are today in coastal China, all of a sudden the equation changes, Harold L. Sirkin, a managing director at BCG told The New York Times.

While some companies are considering returning jobs to the U.S., some brands never went away. 24/7 Wall St. compiled a list of 10 highly visible American brands that are still made in the States. All of the products are well known to consumers. While most are market leaders, what makes them unique is that the competition manufactures their products abroad or theyre the only game in town.

A Bumpy Start For Weber Pellet Grills/smokers

Before I start to introduce what I think are the best Weber reviews currently out there, we do need to discuss the issues that Weber has had with their Gen 1 SmokeFire pellet grills and the limitations that the current Gen 2 SmokeFire pellet grills still have in my opinion. My first article on the Weber SmokeFire pellet grills discusses some of the problems that users experienced with the early models, so if youre not aware of the problems users experienced, I recommend checking that out.

I do also have an article on the differences made to the second generation models, hence my Gen 1 vs Gen 2 SmokeFire article which has corrected several little problems with the first generation models. However, as I also discuss in that article while I think Weber is making excellent pellet grills, especially for their price point, as a pellet smoker the user needs to be made more aware of their limitations.

Now, below Ive included some Gen 1 Weber SmokeFire reviews, even though if you purchase a SmokeFire from a dealer today they should only be selling Gen 2 models as Weber recalled Gen 1 units for modifications to take place. However, if you are purchasing a SmokeFire second-hand from eBay etc, it may very well be a Gen 1 unit and you need to understand what youre getting.

Some Problems With Other Manufacturing Company

Though outsourcing has its benefits, it comes with mini e issues. The first issue being the quality issue. Due to a deficiency of quality control and lower standards during the manufacturing process, customers often suffer. But the Weber company claims that the quality of the grilling product is not affected by all this.

Outsourcing companies do not think about environmental issues. They often rely on shipping their goods to and fro using primary transportation methods for freighters. It can be daunting on the environment.
