What Are Oven Broilers For

Grilled Chicken Indoors

If you dont feel like starting a backyard grill but wishes for a grilled chicken for dinner, your oven broiler comes in handy. It has a broil function that can grill most food, be it meat, poultry or vegetables. Grilling through the oven does not disappoint, as it produces a nicely grilled meat with its natural juices all preserved. To use a broiler for grilling, preheat the oven for a couple of minutes. While waiting, prep your pan by drizzling it with oil before putting the meat on. When the broiler is adequately heated, put the pan inside the oven and leave a small tiny opening as you close the oven door. This is to prevent the temperature from getting too high and burn the food. Because the heating pads on broilers are placed on top, you can flip the meat halfway through, so it cooks evenly. When grilling vegetables, constantly check them as they easily burn when exposed to high temperatures. Know more about grill pans.

Mix Up A Marinade Dry Rub Or Brine

Unless glazing with a barbecue sauce, always season your chicken, whether it’s boneless breasts or the whole bird. Wet marinades, dry rubs and brines all add flavor and moisture to chicken breasts and can also act as a tenderizer. Here’s what to know about each type:

A wet marinade is any type of highly seasoned liquid, such as herb or spice pastes, wines, spiced oils, vinaigrettes, yogurt/buttermilk, Cuban mojo, etc. If a marinade includes something very acidic, like vinegar, wine or citrus, keep the marinating time relatively quick 30 minutes to three hours, depending upon the thickness of the chicken breast and cut it with a little olive oil. Yogurt and buttermilk, which are both rich in lactic acid, are much less acidic and can stand a longer marinating time two to six hours, depending upon the chicken’s thickness. Non-acidic marinades, like herbs and spices mixed with oils, can sit for two to 10 hours.

Is Organic Chicken Better When Grilling Chicken Breast

Organic means that the birds are raised without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, additives or animal by-products, and have access to the outdoors. But, it doesnt necessarily mean that the chicken is healthier for you, tastes better or will cook better. Heres more on how to read the labels on a pack of chicken.

Finally, even if you can’t duplicate the flavorful seared crust that an outdoor grill can produce on meats, your seasonings can help make up for at least some of the missing flavors.

Probably the best ingredient for this is liquid smoke, which sounds silly, but remember that smoke is just particles of burnt wood. Liquid smoke is literally a liquid in which the flavor compounds from actual smoke have been suspended. Thus, adding a dash or this product to your marinades is an excellent way to reproduce the smoky flavor obtained from a charcoal grill. Other ingredients, like dried chipotle or smoked paprika, when included in a spice rub will accomplish the same thing.

You’ll only need five ingredients to make this tasty chicken recipe. The exact measurements are included in the recipe card below. Here’s an overview of what you’ll need:

Chicken breasts: I use boneless skinless chicken breasts in this recipe.

Olive oil: I love cooking with this delicious oil. But if you’d rather use an oil with a higher smoke point, you can use avocado oil instead. Another tasty option is to use melted butter.

Soy sauce: I use reduced-sodium soy sauce in most of my recipes. I find that traditional soy sauce is too salty. Obviously, you can also use a gluten-free alternative.

Seasonings: Black pepper and garlic powder. I actually prefer garlic powder to fresh minced garlic. I feel that it better coats the chicken, and it also doesn’t burn as easily. Note that there’s no salt in this recipe – the soy sauce takes care of that.

The Secret To Keeping Chicken Moist When Grilling

I stole a trick from Thanksgiving turkey to keep the chicken perfectly moist while grilling: BRINE your chicken before you cook it.

Brining consists of soaking the chicken in a salt water solution, often with extra flavors like spices and herbs added.

Like a marinade, it gives the chicken flavor, and it also harnesses the power of science to keep the chicken more moist during cooking.

When you soak meat in salty water, the solution travels through the meat via osmosis .

The meat will absorb both the flavor of the brine and some of the water. You end up with a juicier final result.

I recommend marinating the chicken for at least 30 minutes, and you can let it sit for up to 8 hours. After 8 hours, the meat may begin to break down too much and have an odd texture.

    Tips For Grilled Chicken Breast

Dont grill chicken cold: As with most meats, you want to bring close to room temperature before grilling or cooking. This allows more even cooking throughout. If you grill directly from the fridge, the outside will cook much faster and you risk chairing before the center reaches the correct temperature.

Allow chicken breast to sit about 30 minutes at room temperature before cooking. Not much longer or youll increase the risk of food contamination.

Pre-season: Generously coat both sides of chicken with light olive oil and sprinkle with salt, pepper, and desired seasonings. The olive oil helps to hold in moisture while cooking, increases those nice golden sear marks and helps seasonings stick better to the meat.

Preheat the grill: Preheat the gas grill to medium-high until the temp reaches 350-400° degrees F. The grill needs to be hot when you add chicken, allowing it to sear and cook evenly.

How to add chicken breasts to gas grill: Lightly grease cooking grates of the preheated gas grill with vegetable oil spray or paper towel application to prevent sticking. Immediately add chicken with at least 2-3 inches between pieces. Close lid and cook.

Reduce heat to medium midway: Rotate mid-way for even sear marks and cooking.

Grilled chicken breast safe temp: Cook chicken breast just to an internal temperature of 165° F with an instant-read thermometer. Watch carefully and do not overcook.
