Can Sweet Potatoes Be Grilled Without Foil

The potatoes should be tender but not so soft that they fall apart. The BBQ Sauce should be caramelized but not charred.

It’s important that the BBQ sauce is added at the end of the grilling process. The sugars in the sauce may burn if added too soon.

It may seem weird to add the sliced sweet potatoes right on the grill grates – We tested this recipe with the potatoes right on the grill and by adding a layer of tinfoil between them and the grill.

The potatoes cooked right on the grill had better texture and flavor at the end of the cooking processso tinfoil is not necessary to make them.

Just remember to take care flipping the sweet potato rounds as they are small and my fall through the grates.

Grilled Potatoes And Sweet Potatoes Recipe

I grill all kinds of potatoes on a charcoal grill all summer long. But, I havent mastered a grilling technique that guarantees results where the potatoes arent charred on the outside and raw on the inside. So, I wrap them in foil and basically steam them. They taste good, but this isnt what I am going for.

I recently decided to give potatoes a go on the George Foreman Grill. Why hadnt I done this before? It worked much better and I can have grilled potatoes all year long, not just in the summer. I tried both red skinned white potatoes and orange fleshed sweet potatoes. Both turned out well.

Sweet potatoes are a Thanksgiving classic, but if you arent so fond of the marshmallow-topped whipped variety, you definitely need to try these. Also, they are good any time of the year. You dont need to wait until fall to enjoy them.

My sweet potatoes are sliced and layered in a big grill-safe pan, and then have a brown sugar bourbon sauce poured all over them before being baked off in the pellet grill for about 45 minutes to an hour.

    Grilled Sweet Potato Slices

Im a big fan of simply seasoned and grilled sweet potato slices. They make a great substitute for french fries, and I feel ever so slightly healthier when we grill these up vs. fries or tots. These grilled sweet potatoes are my go-to with a nice, juicy burger. They are simply divine eaten on their own, but they are also great dunked in my chipotle lime dipping sauce.

These sweet potato slices have a secret ingredient: my Award-Winning Chicken Seasoning. You can purchase a bottle of your own chicken seasoning from Patio Provisions, or you can even keep it simple with a good seasoning of salt and pepper. The chicken seasoning adds a punch of flavor with just a kiss of heat to these grilled sweet potato slices, and they are extremely addicting.

Grilled sweet potatoes have the perfect consistency. By hard boiling the sweet potatoes first, they come out super soft and moist on the inside. Next theyre coated in olive oil and seasoning then grilled over super high heat so the outside edges are crispy. Soft on the inside and crisp on the outside. Now thats what I call the perfect grilled sweet potato.

What Kind Of Sweet Potatoes Do You Use

I used both typically varieties of sweet potatoes in this dish. In fact, the orange one is probably labeled a yam in your grocery store, but it is actually just another variety of sweet potatoes.

Thats because yams are REALLY rare here in the US, and they arent typically orange on the inside either.

So for this dish, you can use either the white fleshed or the yellow fleshed sweet potatoes, or a mix of the two.

How To Slow Grill Whole Sweet Potatoes

Grilling whole sweet potatoes is pretty simple. Place the sweet potatoes directly on the grill and let them hang out over medium-high heat while you cook the rest of your dinner. The key is trusting your grill, and not getting too impatient when the skin of the sweet potatoes looks burnished. You want to let the potatoes get fork-tender before removing them, because only then will you be rewarded with sweet, slightly smoky, truly magical sweet potatoes.

As for serving grilled sweet potatoes, you can top them with herbed butter, plain yogurt, and/or pesto or vibrant chimichurri sauce. Ive been eating them weekly with yogurt, fresh pineapple, and toasted coconut.

How Many Times Should You Flip A Steak On The Grill

Grilled Sweet Potatoes with Cilantro Chimichurri

A: This is a very difficult question to answer. It depends on the size of your steak, how thick it is, and what type of cooking surface you are using. For example, if you are grilling a steak on a cast iron skillet, flipping it once should be sufficient. If you are grilling a steak on an electric grill, flipping it twice should be enough.

    How To Grill Sweet Potatoes

We have tried direct and indirect methods as well as higher temperature. We find grilling at 375 degrees Fahrenheit over indirect heat is the best option to get the best texture and soft interior. We also dont wrap them in foil because we want the sugar in the rub to slightly caramelize to add flavor to the skin of the grilled sweet potato.

  • Prepare the grill for indirect grilling, targeting 375 degrees ambient temperature in the grill.
  • Grill indirect for up to an hour, flipping the potato once halfway through grilling to get even heat on both sides.
  • Remove when the texture is soft. We use a knife or an instant read thermometer, like a Thermoworks MK4 Thermapen, so we can see how soft the interior is. It should insert with little friction.
  • Remove and serve with smoked honey butter, or your favorite toppings.
  • On a gas grill, use the same method. Cook the baked sweet potato on the indirect side of the burner.

The Best Dressing For Grilled Sweet Potatoes

One of our favorite dressings for grilled veggies is a sweet-spicy dressing of honey, oil, spicy sambal oelek, and lime juice. Toss it with the warm sweet potatoes so they soak up all that yummy flavor. Other options? Serve with another dipping sauce of your choice, or just serve the slices plain if you have kids at the table.

  • Select medium size sweet potatoes with no bruises or blemishes and with as few curves as possible.
  • Wash and if desired, peel them. Peeling the skin off isnt necessary and you can do this step ahead of time since sweet potatoes down turn brown like other potatoes would.
  • To cut sweet potatoes into wedges start by cutting the potato in 1/2 lengthwise
  • Turn halves cut side down and cut in 1/2 again creating a quarter of a potato
  • Take each 1/4 section and flip so the peeled or skin side is on the cutting board and the thin side is up and then cut in half again. Once youre done you should have at least 8 potato wedges per potato. You can also slice the potato into coins or circles if you prefer that shape. Because you dont want all the food being served to be the same shape, cut your potatoes to compliment the rest of your menu.See how to cut potatoes compliments of North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission.
  • Place wedges in a bowl and drizzle with some oil . Do not drench them or the oil will make the potatoes gray once on the grill.
  • Turn the grill on high to get the grates hot. Once the grates are hot, place the potato wedges directlly on the grill grates for about 3 minutes. Flip the wedge over and grill the other side for 3 minutes. This is just to get the grill marks on the potato but not to completely cook them.

How To Grill Sweet Potatoes Without Foil

For this grilled sweet potato recipe, foil is not necessary to cook the potatoes simply because the potatoes are parboiled prior to slicing, seasoning and grilling. Parboiling partially cooks the potatoes prior to grilling them resulting in creamy sweet potato goodness on the grill.

Its easy to do! Simply boil the potatoes for about 15-20 minutes, then drain them. Prepare your grill by oiling the grates, then preheating it. Slice the sweet potatoes and slather on the marinade seasoning, then toss them on the grill.

Because the sweet potatoes are par-cooked and sliced thick, theres no need for foil to hold smaller sweet potato bits together or to contain stem within a foil packet. Also, theres no chance of the sweet potatoes drying out from the dry heat a grill produces since the sweet potatoes are par-cooked.

Add A Grilled Burger To Those Potatoes

Foreman grilled burgers are a perfect accompaniment to these potatoes. While the potatoes are grilling prepare your burgers by making patties of either beef or turkey with your favorite seasonings. They should be approximately 1/2 thick for best cooking results. You can add a little fat to the turkey so it doesnt dry out, such as a pat of butter in the center of the burger.

Beef burgers will cook on high in 3 to 6 minutes, depending on the preferred doneness. Turkey should cook a full 6 to 8 minutes to be sure they are cooked all the way through. Remember to use the drip pan.

Have your buns ready and all the toppings: cheese, catsup , lettuce, onions, tomatoes, pickles.. I personally like guacamole on my burgers. Here is an easy recipe.
