Hate Mayo Use A Pastry Brush & Melted Butter
Don’t worry, mayo-haters: there are alternatives out there. I got this tip from Cook’s Illustrated and have never looked back. For amazingly flavorful, crunchy, crispy grilled bread, melt two tablespoons of butter . Next, use a pastry brush to apply the butter to both sides of the bread.

What To Do When You Dont Have Enough Colors
Here we can use the simple trick we all learned during our painting classes when we were kids. I never thought I will use those tricks for making Rainbow grilled cheese one day. LOL
Today I was not having green color with me, so I mixed the blue and yellow color in 2: 1 ratio to get the green. Similarly, Magenta + Yellow makes red and red + green yields yellow. Life is easy guyss!!!

How To Make Air Fryer Breakfast Grilled Cheese
Start by buttering your bread, one side both pieces of bread. Lay the butter side down for both pieces of bread. On one piece of bread, add the cheese slices
Set your time for 5 minutes at 350 degrees F. Depending on the air fryer, you may not use all of the 5 minutes, as soon as the cheese is melted stop air frying.
Top the melted cheese with an egg.
How Much Cheese To Use
I find that using at least 2 thick slices, about to ¼-inch max, of sharp cheddar provides just the right ratio of cheese-to-bread. If the slices are any thicker, itll affect the melt time. If using a block of cheese, you can grate or shred it to make an even layer, although it will melt quicker than slices.
When placing the cheese on top of the unbuttered side of the bread, leave a little bit of space along the edges so the cheese doesnt spew over, unless you like a little bit of fried cheese on the edges.

The Best Cheeses For Your Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
Grilled cheese is the ultimate comfort food. For the ultimate grilled cheese, here are the cheeses you should use.
There’s no bad time for comfort food, but in uncertain times, it’s often the first place we turn. Enter a good ol’ grilled cheese sandwich.
The good news is that you can use any cheese you like for your grilled cheese. If it’s your favorite, give it a go! The bad news is that not every cheese will give you the gooey melt that we all hold dear. If you simply must include a not-so-melty cheese like Parmesan or feta in your sandwich, grate or break up said cheese into any of the below cheeses . This way it will be perfectly incorporated into the dreamy, oozy sandwich that you’re going for.

Can You Make Sandwiches Ahead Of Time
Sandwiches can easily be made ahead of time to help cut down on your prep work. Its especially helpful to make sandwiches in advance if youre preparing them for an event or party. There are two different ways you can store your pre-made sandwiches depending on how soon you plan on eating them. You can store your sandwiches or sliders in the:
- Refrigerator. If you will be eating your sandwiches within the next day or two, storing them in the refrigerator is a good option. Sandwiches can be kept in the refrigerator for up to two days. Make sure to cover your sandwiches and keep them chilled until youre ready to eat them. And if your sandwich will have condiments or fresh vegetables on them, its a good idea to leave those elements off until youre ready to serve them to keep the bread and veggies from getting soggy in the fridge.
- Freezer. For long-term storage, freezing your sandwiches is a good option. Frozen sandwiches can last up to six months. Like sandwiches stored in the refrigerator, its not a good idea to freeze fresh vegetables on your sandwich. But you can add sauce and condiments to your frozen sliders, if you want. Before reheating your sandwiches, make sure to allow them to thaw completely for even cooking.
Preparing Unique Grilled Cheese
Choosing different types of ingredients can make your grilled dishes more tasty and unique. Below, we will discuss how you can bring variations in your air-fried grilled cheese.
- Bread: You can add various types of bread, including rye, ciabatta, etc. It will bring a new variation to the air-fried grilled cheese.
- Cheese: Like the bread, there are various cheese options, though. You can add olby, provolone, swiss, pepper jack, Monterey jack, or any strongly flavored cheese.
- Toppings: You can add tomatoes, caramelized onions, mushrooms, cucumbers, avocados, sliced meat, pepperoni, or anything you like to make the grilled cheese better.

Can I use any kind of bread for this recipe?
You can, but the softer the better so it can soak up the egg and milk mixture.
What if I dont like mustard?
What, you mean like my own Southern daughter? You can leave the mustard out and it will still be delicious!
Can I substitute a different kind of cheese?
Yep! Just make sure it is a nice melty kind American, cheddar and muenster will all work. Basically if it will work in a regular grilled cheese sandwich, it will work fine here too.
Now, this dawned on me after I finished taking this sandwichs picture, but we discovered that if you want to take it to even MORE glorious heights, you can sprinkle on a little powder sugar after it comes out of the pan.
And/or a drizzle of maple syrup.

Traditionally Croque Monsieurs are served at bistros and are the type of thing you find as a casual lunchtime offering in France, maybe with a side salad and fries .
Outside of France, its more common to see it on breakfast and brunch menus.
And just when you thought it wasnt possible to gild a lily any more, let me also mention the Croque Madame. This is a popular variation in France that serves no less than a sunny-side-up fried egg on top of an already-obscenely-decadent Croque Monsieur!

Shred The Cheese So It Melts More Evenly
It’s a pain, but shredding the cheese will pay you back with a wonderfully thick, smooth, melted center. Sliced cheese almost always melts unevenly and requires more cooking time to make sure that all of it gets melted.
So shred, shred, shred away, and pile on more cheese than you think you need: the volume of unmelted shredded cheese, like fresh spinach, is significantly and visibly reduced once it’s cooked down.

Also, skip pre-shredded cheese if possible. In my opinion, they’re overpriced , and the cheese tends to be dried-out and flavorless compared to the kind you shred yourself.

Perfect Cast Iron Grilled Cheese
A grilled cheese sandwich is only as good as its ingredients: tangy sourdough bread, a blend of high-quality cheeses, and plenty of Challenge Butter slathered on each side. For this recipe, we recommend a cast-iron pan for its even distribution of heat we also suggest a variety of filling options, depending on your mood or what you have on hand.
Mayo Or Butter When And How
My cheesemonger friend got me onto using mayonnaise instead of butter.
Its always spreadable, it gives you a fabulous golden-brown crust thats not as apt to burn as butter, and it offers just a little zip.
My favorite brands are Hellmanns/Best Foods and Dukes. I havent tried Miracle Whip , but I figure its too sweet to work well here. You can also make your own mayoits actually just as easy as making a grilled cheese!
Give mayonnaise a shot! Use the same amount as you would butter.
If you are 100 percent Team Butter, I understand. You can either butter the bread directly or melt a pat of butter in the pan. I prefer to butter the bread directly, but lets say your butter is straight from the fridge and rock-hard. In that case, melt it in the pan.
One of my colleagues here at Simply Recipes swears by this approach and uses it in his Italian Grilled Cheese Sandwiches.

- white bread, or bread of your choice personally, I love the classic white bread when it comes to this recipe, but feel free to use whatever bread you have on hand or whatever you prefer.
- butter or mayonnaise I use either or, depending on my mood. However, when I want the brownest, crispiest, and most flavorful sandwich, I go with mayo.
- American cheese any melty cheese is good for this recipe, but American cheese is the classic we all know and love!
How To Make Air Fryer Grilled Cheese
Making a grilled cheese in an air fryer is much like making it the traditional way on a griddle or stovetop. But the results are gardened perfectly crisp and gooey in the middle.
Start by assembling your sandwich. Be sure to coat both outer pieces of bread with a generous smear of butter. For the healthy sandwich recipe, layer your cooked veggies between slices of cheese inside the bread. This way the cheese melts and keeps the vegetables inside the sandwich.
Place the sandwich in your air fryer and cook for 8 minutes, flipping after 5. Then dig in!

Nothing is more comforting than a hot, melty grilled cheese sandwich. Grilled cheese and tomato soup are a combo made in heaven. Its the perfect easy lunch recipe and great for even the pickiest of eaters.
The best grilled cheese always starts with a sturdy bread, lots of cheese and a smear of butter mayonnaise on the outside!
Melted Butter Is A Must
The key to an evenly-greased and toasted bread is to brush the top and bottom of the sandwich with melted butter. You can microwave the butter and easily brush the liquid on each slice. This allows you to control how much of the fat is applied so it doesnt get too soggy.
Do this step right before adding to the preheated pan. If you have salted butter, that would enhance the flavor further. The milk solids in the butter transform into nutty, deep golden brown hues when gently heated and this elevates the taste and texture.

What Can You Add To Your Grilled Cheese
For extra flavor add a pinch of spices to the butter. I like Cajun seasoning for a little spice.
Add veggies like spinach, arugula, sautéed mushrooms, sautéed onions or finely chopped broccoli florets.
Tomato and bacon will make this the ultimate grilled cheese.

What Pan To Use
I prefer to use my cast iron skillet as it maintains a consistent heat better and gives a superior crispy surface. A nonstick skillet works well and prevents sticking if using sweeter types of bread. In either case, you want to use very moderate heat for making the sandwiches, about medium-low or low if the bread is toasting too quickly.

Deviled Egg And Bacon Grilled Cheese
This reporter’s personal favorite, Wilcox’s deviled eggs sandwich came about because she realized most people “don’t on a regular basis make deviled eggs at home.”
“They kind of save them for a potluck or holiday, so we started selling them in the cafe,” she explained. “And it was so popular that I decided one day to try to figure out some sort of grilled cheese that we could do that would incorporate this ingredient that we are had.”
She envisioned a “breakfasty” sandwich and decided to just cut them up and add a few key ingredients like their sweet heat seasoning to give it a little kick.
“It’s a great combination of sweet and spicy, and it really kind of just says the whole thing off, is very, very popular,” she said.

Epic Grilled Ham And Cheese Sandwich
Its all in your choice of ingredients.
There are two things that come to mind when trying to create the perfect grilled cheese sandwich. First, I like to include a protein factor. This guarantees my meat-loving family will gobble it up. Secondly, I try to match the meat with a perfectly, paired melty cheese.
When using stellar ingredients, you only need to include a few to make a great tasting meal. Since I knew I was going to be using Boars Head SmokeMaster Beechwood Black Forest Ham, finding the perfect cheese to match the rich, smooth and distinct flavor of the ham was paramount to creating an epic, tasting sandwich.
The ham is naturally smoked with imported German beechwood, a flavor we rarely taste here in America. Have your grocery store deli slice the ham very thin, which is going to allow you to pile on as much as you possibly can between the bread slices.
I decided on smoked Gouda cheese to pair with the smoked ham. Its creamy texture and salty taste elevated the distinct flavors in the smoked ham. Together, on sourdough bread, they are a taste powerhouse and something you need to experience for yourself.
My number one smoke house rule includes pairing food with enough distinction in each bite. This way one flavor is not lost on the other. You will experience that with this grilled cheese sandwich. Its a smoked food lovers delight.
Do you have your own set of Smoke House Rules? Maybe you love to smoke your own meat or you have someone do it for you?
