How To Run Natural Gas Line For Outdoor Grill

Gas Type Propane Or Natural Gas

How to Install a Natural Gas Grill | Ask This Old House

The cost is roughly the same for installing a propane gas line from the tank to the house as the cost to have natural gas run to the house. Find out which kind of gas your home currently has.

  • Propane gas is stored in tanks, usually outside the home.
  • Natural gas lines are comparable to power bills in that a local or city utility company provides the service. Instead of a tank, there will be a meter outside your home.

If you are building a new home or do not currently have gas, there are several benefits to each type. Take the time to understand the differences between propane and natural gas so that you can choose the right one for your individual needs.

Mistake #: Going Over Budget

When planning for your gas grill, stick to your budget. Compared to a charcoal grill, a gas line adds additional expenses for installation, parts, and equipment. This is in addition to the cost of the actual grill. Once you start using your gas line grill, you may notice a slight increase in your gas bill if you use it frequently. However, you wont need to buy charcoal or propane. Making a note of all of these expenses can help you stay within your budget.

How Much Should It Cost To Bury My Pe Pipe

These prices vary from in different areas of the country so I tried to list them on the high side of what I think they should be.

Permit cost should be less than $100.00

Currently a daily rental for a 24â³ trenching machine is less than $200.00 and closer to $125.00 for four hour rental.

On Amazon you can get 100 feet of 1â³ PE pipe for just over $200.00 and I chose 1â³ because itâs an average size.

Add in two risers at about $85.00 each for two would be $170.00

Their are always some miscellaneous items like a pressure gauge for about less than $10.00 and the fittings to connect. You may find a reverse threaded coupling handy.

Some inspectors may not want to see a union in this application. A reverse threaded coupling would make the job look more professional and impress your inspector.

Reverse couplings can be a little intimidating at first, but with a little trial and error youâll get the idea.

Itâs nothing more than a short length of pipe or nipple with right handed threads on one end and left handed threads on the other. A special coupling fits on the left handed thread end and it will connect two pipes together just like a union.

The arrows point to the unpainted reverse coupling nipple on top connected to riser at the bottom arrow.

So back to how much does it cost to run a gas line underground:

  • Permit $100
  • Misc $50
  • Total $690

Construct The Pipe Run

To take the gas supply from your established property pipework to your outdoor grill, you need a pipe run. The service professional drills a hole in your wall and begins to connect different pipe sections. At each connection, Teflon tape or pipe dope secures the fittings for safety.

The service professional must use several straight pipe pieces in conjunction with elbow parts. This design means your pipe run can reach your outdoor grill using the least amount of materials. When the pipe run is complete, it ends at a location called a stub-out. The service professional will surround the stub-out with insulating material to reduce the risk of air leaks.

The Benefits Of A Natural Gas Barbeque Hook Up

Having a natural gas line for your barbeque is very convenient. Instead of worrying about your propane running out in the middle of cooking dinner, youll have a non-stop supply from your utilitys natural gas line. Once installed, your hook up will be located near where your grill is. When you want to use the barbeque, simply turn on the valve, light the grill and away you go.

The natural gas you use for your barbeque will be cheaper than how much youll pay for propane. Youll experience substantial savings over the years, not to mention the headache of having to fill or swap your tank.

Natural gas is lighter than air, and it rises. Propane is heavier and tends to build up when it is used. This factor makes natural gas a safer fuel to use compared to propane. You dont have to worry about built-up gas igniting unexpectantly. It also burns cleaner than propane, which means fewer toxins are released in the air and in your food.

Propane also gives off a wet heat, which can change the texture of the food you are cooking. Some people think this type of heat has a negative impact on the food and prefer how natural gas cooks instead.

This article will discuss the cost of having a professional gasfitter hook install a line out for your barbeque. Before getting to that, we will cover some important information.

Common Gas Line Sizing Questions For Underground Gas Piping For A Firepit

Running a new natural gas line

We get a lot of questions about the required diameter of pipe and gas sizing requirements for underground gas piping for a Firepit. It is not uncommon for a Firepit to have a maximum BTU load exceeding 300,000 BTU. This is a massive BTU load! In comparison, your average 40-50 gallon water heater only requires 40,000 BTU. We often get asked if a new underground gas piping line to a Firepit can be routed from an existing BBQ stub out. The answer 99.9% of the time is unfortunately NO. Due to the high BTU demands of most Firepits, we almost always need to begin the new underground gas piping line directly from the gas meter to ensure the Firepits high BTU requirements will be met. If your gas meter is in a location that prohibits underground gas piping, we can use a combination of exposed black Iron mounted to the side of your home to get past any obstacles such as sidewalks or driveways that might make direct burial underground gas piping from the gas meter not possible.

Inportant Note: Black Iron Pipe can never be buried underground! It doesnt matter if you paint it, wrap it in tape, or any other means of sealing the pipe, black Iron will fail if buried underground.

Some of the modern Firepit kits can be much lower BTU loads compared to a Firepit built from masonry and gas rings. Of all the gas appliances we install underground gas piping for, Firepits vary the most on BTU load between models/designs.

Speaking of the installation, there are a couple of different methods of hooking up your grill to the gas line. The safest is with a gas plug safety quick disconnect. Your best bet is to hire a natural gas plumber to do this for you.

If you connect your natural-gas barbecue to your gas line at home, you will never have to worry about running out of gas in the middle of a family cookout. To connect your barbecue to your homes gas line, just follow these steps.

Warning: Natural gas barbecues and their fuel are highly combustible. Make sure you are familiar with your barbecues manual and dealing with natural-gas lines before proceeding. If you are not a licensed gas fitter, consult with a qualified professional to complete this job. In addition, look up the code restrictions for your area before completing this project, as there may be special instructions and laws.

Running the Tubes

From the main gas line, run the piping from a port in the mainline, ending at a quick-connect coupling that should be located at your preferred location in your backyard, in a wall.

You can also have several couplings installed in case you may want to move the grill around, or if you want to have two natural-gas barbecues running at the same time.

Connecting the Grill-

Step 1 Turning off the Gas Valve
Step 2 Installing Hose to the Coupling

Use the adjustable wrench as necessary to ensure the hose is installed tightly to avoid gas leaks.
