Whats Your Grilling Style

Before you decide which kind of grill is best for your lifestyle, consider your space and cooking style.

  • Is your deck or patio wired or within range of an extension cord? Without a plug-in outlet, a pellet grill is not going to be the ideal choice.
  • Are you feeding a small army? Consider some of the gas options with lots of cook space and side burners for keeping everything from baked beans to chili or chowder ready to serve whenever the gang is ready to eat.
  • Do you have space and proper support for a heavy grill? A kamado is a commitment, in terms of weight and space, depending on the size. But, its a fantastic grill to choose.
  • Do you grill on the fly? If spontaneity is your style, a slow-heating and stabilizing grill probably isnt a good fit.
  • Are you a purist who wouldnt dream of serving a burger without grill marks and a smoky flavor? Gas may not bring the best flavor, but it is clean, affordable, and fast to get to temperature.

What Makes A Smoker Different

Burn, Baby, Burn: The Best Charcoal Grills You Can Buy

Gas grills simply dont bring out the robust flavors compared to smoking or charcoal grills, Chavez noted. The smoking aspect really brings a different flavor profile, especially because you can choose what type of wood that you want to smoke, he said. Oakwood, cherry wood and mesquite wood achieve three different flavors, flavors that you won’t find when using a charcoal grill. But being able to cook low and slow over a flavored heat source isnt the only difference between a gas grill, charcoal grill and smoker, according to Jim Mumford of Jim Cooks Food Good and Brand Ambassador for Johnsonville. Heres a basic way to understand their differences:

  • Gas grill: Low to high heat, no smoke flavor, easy to maintain temperature.
  • Charcoal grill: Medium to high heat, some smoke flavor, moderately easy to maintain temperature.
  • Smoker: Low to medium heat, heavy smoke flavor, temperature control varies significantly depending on model.
  • The main benefit of a smoker is that you achieve maximum flavor from your food and its healthier, said Hardy. However, a major drawback to some is that you must put some time aside because it takes longer to smoke meat properly. You also have to continue checking the smoker and making sure your temperature is consistent for even smoking. Grab a beer and kick your feet up let it go low and slow, he said.

    Kamado Joe Junior Bbq

Best kamado charcoal BBQ: With included heat deflector and nifty stand, this is stiff competition for the Big Green Egg

    Specifications

The Kamado Joe Junior might look like the over-ripe cousin of the Big Green Egg, and admittedly they do share some resemblance, but its charms are all its own.

    Compact

For starters, while the grill area is the same size on the Joe Junior as on Big Green Eggs MiniMax, its a little easier to cart around if need be, thanks to its neat handled cast iron stand and lighter-by-a-whisker weight.

    Extra features

Its also more cost-effective, despite offering a great range of uses thanks to the included heat deflector stone that allows you to hot smoke, roast, and bake as well as grill.

    Kamado value

Kamado Grills aren’t cheap, so we think this option for under £500 is a real steal.

Are Charcoal Grills Better Than Gas Grills

How To Buy A Charcoal Grill From Max Good at AmazingRibs.com

There are certainly some backyard chefs who think so. Charcoal grills are simpler and less prone to failure. They also can get hotter than most gas grills and make it far easier to get a rich, smoky flavor from your meats.

But while you may get a different answer if you conduct your own informal survey, many backyard chefs often prefer gas grills because theyre easier to light and you have a lot more temperature control. Thats because charcoal grills arent adjustable with the spin of a burner. Gas can also be a lot more convenientyou can stop buying charcoal and propane tanks and run a permanent gas line to the grill.

The bottom line is that neither kind of grill is unambiguously a better choicechoose the one that sounds like a better fit for your needs.

How We Picked The Best Gas Grill

We had three firm criteria that our main contenders had to meet:

Finally, we restricted our search to grills that burn propane from refillable tanks, the most common fuel by far, but you should note that most grills can also run on natural gasthough converting to natural gas isnt cheap or simple.1

We didnt fret much over two other factors that grill-makers spend a lot of time talking about: total Btu count and the grates material. First, the total Btu count on three-burner grills tends to vary between 30,000 and 40,000, and the industry is making a strong push toward more is better. But our research and reporting convinced us that at least as important as the total output was whether those Btus were applied efficiently, steadily, and evenly across the grates. We decided to reserve judgment until our tests.

We knew we would be looking at intangibles, too, such as how well the grills were packed, if the instructions were clear, and if assembly was reasonably straightforward. And, of course, we would consider the biggest intangible of all: the grills ability to perform in our tests.

But those judgments would have to wait until we got our hands on the contenders. So after weeks of research, reporting, and discussion, we settled on four gas grills to test in our main $400 to $700 category, and two grills around the $200 mark to test as budget options.
